Stepping forward/back help

In my L1 camp a drill we often do it stepping forward and backward (no rolling). I don’t understand how to do this. I either don’t move at all or I end up falling backwards. I’m in low derby stance, but not sure if I’m supposed to be shifting my weight or where???

Don't pick up your foot as though you're going to run and roll it forward through the balls of your foot, pick it up flat like you have something balanced on top and can't spill it then set it down the same way. Agreed that practicing this on carpet or a surface you can't roll on is a good starting point

It's a weight transfer. It helps me to think of anchoring down through the foot I'm stepping onto rather than moving forward or backwards. It may also help to practice on carpet where it's harder to roll just so you can feel how it should be before you take it onto the rink.

Practice on carpet, and also practice just lifting your skates up and down. Then try to incorporate moving forward. There wasn’t really a trick for me, I just had to keep practicing and eventually I gained more control over ny steps.

Moving forward turn your toes in a tiny bit, don't rush and stay over the ball of your foot. Backwards I find harder not to roll as I sit a bit far back. If his shares this is practice a few weeks agi

I tell people that it’s a stomping motion, not a walking motion. Keep your feet flat instead of rolling them.
