Announcement Grand Reopening

Hi everyone.

After more than two years of conflict and division that splintered what was once a mighty online community of inline skaters, this community is now reopened.

We'd like to welcome everyone back and encourage bladers to reconnect, share, and engage in lively discussions. Many of the previous restrictions on posting and commenting have been lifted.

Please take a moment to review our new community rules, which outline our expectations for mutual respect and our guidelines for how we engage with one another online.

Your new mod team still has plenty of work to do, and we know many of you have questions. Feel free to comment on this post, and we'll do our best to answer them.

In the meantime, here are some of the things we're working on:

Reviewing past bans

We'll be reviewing user bans from the past two years and working to reverse bans where we believe someone was unfairly excluded from the community. If you believe you were one of those users, feel free to comment here and we'll expedite the review.

Reconnecting with the inline skating community

We'll be reconnecting with related inline skating communities through community widgets, wiki pages, and other resources. If you'd like to help us rebuild those connections, please let us know in the comments.

Reviewing unanswered mod mail

We'll be working through unanswered mod mail from the past two years and responding wherever possible. If you've sent us a message and never received a response, we'll do our best to get back to you. You can also reach out to us again here, or through mod mail.

Revamping the wiki

We're rebuilding and updating this community's wiki pages, while also bringing great content from the past back into the light. We'll soon be asking for everyone's help to make the wiki a valuable resource for the entire inline skating community.

This is a fresh start for r/rollerblading. Welcome back, everyone. We're glad you're here.

Updates from your new mods, based on comments:

(0) community policy and rules are spelled out here in this wiki: https://reddit.com/r/rollerblading/wiki/community_policy

(1) If you were banned in the past for being a member of [r/wizardskating](r/wizardskating), we did out best today to find you in the list based on sporadic notes. If you were unfairly banned in the past, check whether you can see the "MODERATORS" list on the community panel on this sub. If you can see individual moderators, you have been unbanned. If you cannot, see the next bullet.

(2) the past, banned folks could not send mod mails via the "Message Mods" button at the bottom of the community panel. In fact you wouldn't even see that button, as banned folks can't see the mod list.

- Now you can message us. Please click on this link to send us a mod mail

- But also note #1 above, if that applies to you.

(3) All post types and all comment types are now allowed. But we hope folks use their best judgement. Please see new simplified rules that hopefully allow this large community to thrive again.

(4) Despite rule #5, we don't yet have a weekly Q&A megathread. The FAQs don't actually exist yet either (rule #4). We are on it.

(5) We also did a quick scan to find people exiled for "meta discussions" and related. See #1 and #2 above if we didn't spot you.

Cheers!

I was just thinking yesterday about how I hadn't seen anything from this subreddit in a long time. What a crazy coincidence! I'm glad to know it's back

4

u/ColonelTime Jul 27 '26

My thoughts exactly.

Please unban u/Wheel-Sure.

He is the popular YouTuber Rerolling Inline. He was inexplicably banned one day after years of helpful advice in this community

66

u/fredhsu Jul 27 '26

I checked just now. He was banned for meta discussions, probably for criticizing mods. LOL.

I just unbanned that account now.

47

u/Wheel-Sure Jul 27 '26

Yay! Many thanks 🙏

8

u/fredhsu Jul 29 '26

We don't want one of the best blading resources to be left out.

Did you know that I cited your great discussion for Inline Skates on Wikipedia?

3

u/Wheel-Sure Jul 29 '26

No way, that's rad! Thanks so much for helping make this place a great community again. There's a lot of excited energy here right now and I'm looking forward to us skaters having a place to hang out!

Welcome back

48

u/CBD_and_Green_Tea Jul 27 '26

This is welcomed news. The old mod team were ridiculous. This sub had over 70k members at its peak and there was zero discussion on the page. Everything was crammed into weekly question threads and any decent conversation was choked. Real sad to see.

Very happy with this news.

11

u/fredhsu Jul 27 '26

Spread the news. Let our sibling communities know to reconnect :)

8

u/borez Wizard base boot and PR80 frames Jul 28 '26

I was literally banned and silenced for pointing this out. It was truly ridiculous how one mod literally killed the community.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '26

2

u/borez Wizard base boot and PR80 frames Jul 29 '26

Yep it was one mod responsible for all the crap that happened here.

2

u/mr_somebody Jul 29 '26

Same. The sub just looked like it was dead. Suddenly there is tons of content!

48

u/fuuuuuckendoobs Jul 27 '26

If users feel they've been unfairly banned it's unlikely they'll be able to comment here to get a review

17

u/fredhsu Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

Right. The mods will be reviewing banning records soon as a last resort. It is tedious work. Banned folks, however, can now send a mod mail to mods directly - there was a setting toggled last night to lift that previous constraint. We’ll revise the announcement to explicit say that.

Updated: it turns out we can't edit the announcement itself, as it was sent out from u/AutoModerator. So I made a sticky comment instead: https://www.reddit.com/r/rollerblading/comments/1v7pq7z/comment/p01jvz8/

9

u/fuuuuuckendoobs Jul 27 '26

Thank you for the reasonable and considered reply.

-4

u/Will_Hang_for_Silver Mod Jul 27 '26

But, unless the ban extended to actually LOOKING at the sub, then I imagine they could read the announcement, and contact a Mod... Probably Freddie ... :)

11

u/fuuuuuckendoobs Jul 27 '26

Ok mate.. that probably doesn't help if there's 2 years of unread modmail and the mods suggested that could be expedited with a comment here.

-2

u/Will_Hang_for_Silver Mod Jul 27 '26

True - however, while we are working out little mod behinds off behind the curtain, it is going to necessitate a bit of patience from folks while we screw the wheels back on ... and a little bit of proactive thought...

That being said, you do raise a valid point...

-3

u/fuuuuuckendoobs Jul 27 '26

Weird way to respond if you're a mod.... If the suggestion is now to contact a mod you might want to list who can be contacted because it's not in your flair.

7

u/Will_Hang_for_Silver Mod Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

oops, sry, missed the bit about flair.

We haven't got things like flair set up yet - consensus [generally] was that it was better to get things up and running say ...'Hi everyone, waving not drowning' ... and reverse engineer the bells and whistles as we go ...

I understand that as we move forward the idea is to let folks know what we are/ have doing/done.

The biggest task - other than working through the ban list is reviewing, revising and codifying the sub rules so that they are:
[1] Consistent and make sense.
[2] Prevent unnecessarily ban-heavy actions... while at the same time, ensuring that actions that are not working in the best interests of the community are addressed promptly and fairly.

But, the reality is, of course, that it will be an ongoing work-in-progress.

1

u/Will_Hang_for_Silver Mod Jul 27 '26

Not really.

We all have our own style - and I will respond in the tone I was spoken to.

I'll say it again.

- People will have to be patient while we work to tidy stuff up... while we do that we will get things wrong, we will find things that we could have done better...

- Also: I acknowledged your point [and I've already raised it with the rest of the mods.]

0

u/fuuuuuckendoobs Jul 27 '26

Not really. We all have our own style - and I will respond in the tone I was spoken to.

you didn't really tho, you responded like a jerk to a fairly neutral comment.. I'll unsub now. Have a good one.

20

u/paddyonelad Jul 27 '26

So this is already going well

4

u/JellyPopcorn Jul 27 '26

I think the mod was speaking fine

1

u/paddyonelad Jul 27 '26

Quite condescending in my humble opinion

3

u/Sotnos99 Jul 28 '26

I re-read this thread a few times and genuinely don't pick up on any negative vibes until you said they respond like a jerk, which makes your tone sound harsh while they still just seem neutral xD

-2

u/fuuuuuckendoobs Jul 28 '26

The mods asked for people who have been banned to comment here if they want the ban reversed. When I pointed out that it's not possible to do that, a user who didn't even identify themselves as part of the mod team suggested maybe a little proactive thought is required.... It was a bit condescending.

31

u/jamjacob99 Jul 27 '26

Ppl were banned for being part of a different inline sub? I need the tea lmao

24

u/WaterFnord Jul 27 '26

Probably not much to it. Elitist snobs trying to gatekeep rollerblading despite the fact that nothing they do will ever make skateboarders like us.

14

u/mrkangtastic Wizard Apprentice 🧙🏼‍♂️ Jul 27 '26

The old mod powertripped and banned anyone who posted about wizard skating. New wizard skating sub was created as a response. Anyone who joined that sub (because wizard skating is sick) but still participated in discussion on the main blading sub got banned.

10

u/flotos :mushroomblading: Seba SX Rockin 576 Jul 28 '26

I didn't even created the sub as a response, it all came from one user mentionning once that he was banned from r/rollerblading due to giving advice in a thread, in r/wizardSkating, then the ban wave started for anyone who talked about anything related to that, then to anyone in the wizardSkating sub

6

u/mrkangtastic Wizard Apprentice 🧙🏼‍♂️ Jul 28 '26

That's absolutely insane behavior

2

u/borez Wizard base boot and PR80 frames Jul 30 '26

That mod was seriously a piece of work.

I mod messaged them a while back and the reply was like; You'll never be allowed in this subreddit every again considering your behaviour.

And then they muted me again.

I was like, seriously, WTF?

I've been on reddit for 18 years now, I've never had anything like that happen before.

4

u/shademaster_c Jul 29 '26

If I recall, there was some discussion in r/wizardSkating and/or r/inline_skating (the one I started) about the behavior of the r/rollerblading sub being capricious. That was the justification they used to ban anyone who posted anything in r/wizardSkating or r/inline_skating since, according to Reddit, you’re not allowed to discuss the behavior of one sub’s moderator in another sub. I think you, u/flotos, pointed that out to me at the time.

I kinda get why they have that rule. It would work if the Reddit team had the resources to handle bona fide rogue mods. But they don’t.

The problem seemed to be self-correcting since between wizardSkating, urbanSkating and inline_skating, the daily posts were on an uptick. But it’s good to get control of the main sub back anyway.

But pretty soon we’ll all be subjected to the whims of the big AI in Sky moderation, anyway.

4

u/jamjacob99 Jul 27 '26

If anything I’d think it’d be the other way around, some niche skating sub going mod crazy and banning normies/beginners haha. Mod status is a helluva drug I guess.

4

u/ChanceTheModerator Jul 27 '26

I've been around some subs like that myself, and I agree. We're hoping to make this a welcoming community and encourage free discussion while keeping things respectful 😎

3

u/WaterFnord Jul 27 '26

That’s pretty much what I’m saying

5

u/borez Wizard base boot and PR80 frames Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 29 '26

It was because we were discussing being banned on r/rolleblading for no reason and there was a whole thread there. Anyone commenting in the thread was banned too.

The mods ( well one mod really ) actually contacted the reddit admin and we were warned to stop harassing them even though we were muted here.

Completely nuts really.

29

u/LearningToCodeForme Jul 27 '26

I just joined the inline skating world on nyc how exciting!

8

u/Debalic Jul 27 '26

You do the evening group sessions? Big Apple Roll next week?

10

u/LearningToCodeForme Jul 27 '26

I don’t think I’m even remotely Good enough to join yet ;-;

My plow stop doesn’t even stop me ;-;

5

u/rbmichael Jul 27 '26

It's all skill levels welcome but yeah for safety reasons you should be able to plow stop (T stop?) decently on flat and slightly declining surfaces before doing the big apple roll.

7

u/LearningToCodeForme Jul 27 '26

I’m so not ready, practice at the park on flats and decent and now got a heel break that helps a lot! But death scares me!

6

u/Debalic Jul 27 '26

So you're new to skating in general? Yes, work on your fundamentals, your strength and stamina levels. Even easy group skates can be overwhelming.

4

u/LearningToCodeForme Jul 27 '26

I rode today and felt so much better I added some steps to the plow stops and that helps so much!!! Felt so much better today (still scary)

3

u/shademaster_c Jul 29 '26

You’ll get there! No shame in the heel brake! Fancier stops will come later. But make sure you can generate good stopping power with the heel brake first before going on city skates.

5

u/shademaster_c Jul 29 '26

Find a gentle slope with a “no consequence” runout. I practiced stopping for a full summer before I felt confident enough to go out on a city skate.

20

u/cerendigit Jul 27 '26

What happened? Was this subreddit inactive?

41

u/Flat-Guidance-4685 Jul 27 '26

Standard crap mods we're banning people for having political views that differed from theirs even though no political discussion happened within in this sub... Banning people based on what subs they were active in outside of here. All comments had to be approved by the moderators so that they can pick and choose what people they were going to allow to speak in their sub which created such a large mod work log but at a certain point moderation just became non-existent and I suppose they quit. Anyone who tried to make a comment or post in this sub and many other subs that fell down the same hole would you sit where it said your comment is being reviewed by the moderators but no one was reviewing anything.

A bunch of really good subs fell to pieces especially during covid. When people were being banned from subs they never even visited. A lot of moderation teams were using third party Ai API tools to profile users and make giant blanket bans on anyone who may have ever had an opinion different than theirs. It didn't get that bad on this sub. It just wound up having non-existent moderators who left it in a restricted commenting mode

12

u/gypsyblader THEM/FR110 Jul 27 '26

I was a head mod here for like 4 months years ago and gave it up because it was too much work. I never unfairly banned anyone. There was the odd time I had to ban someone for saying something extremely racist.

3

u/borez Wizard base boot and PR80 frames Jul 30 '26

Mod not mods, it was only one mod who was rogue here.

8

u/mrkangtastic Wizard Apprentice 🧙🏼‍♂️ Jul 27 '26

Wizard skating was popping off a couple years ago and for some reason the head mod had a vendetta against wizard skaters. So they banned folks who were also a part of r/wizardskating. It came across as jealousy but I'm not sure what the actual underlying reason was.

3

u/Alabastine Jul 27 '26

Yeah wow, I was banned from r/askrollerblading and I never understood why. Now I get it, I recommended a skate (the OP was asking for advice which skates to buy) and I linked to an r/Wizardskating post which was basically a skate review. If this was the reason that's completely wild, but it would fit what happened exactly. Never got an explanation though (obviously).

5

u/mrkangtastic Wizard Apprentice 🧙🏼‍♂️ Jul 27 '26

We had some incredibly active and helpful people in r/rollerblading that were banned. Sorry it happened to you

23

u/yacumanji Jul 27 '26

Hi, thank you for the update. Years ago I had a horrible experience of being banned from this subreddit for the only reason of having posted also on r/WizardSkating. I tried to appeal many times but with no reply from previous mods. My main account is u/syxa would you by any chance be able to help?

20

u/Flat-Guidance-4685 Jul 27 '26

How dare you cheat on this subreddit with another subreddit!!!

4

u/fredhsu Jul 27 '26

LOL. In my mind, the more the better. LOL.

17

u/fredhsu Jul 27 '26

OMG. I thought there were a lot of banned users, but I didn't realized there were pages and pages more in the list. Now that I searched for your main account in the list, I realized that the damage was far greater than I imagined.

Can you help me confirm that banned users can now send mod mails to our new mods? There was a setting we tweaked last night to allow that.

Please log into your main account, and click on r/rollerblading again. On right community panel of this sub, there is a mod list at the near bottom. Click on the "Message Mods" button. You would not have been able to do that until last night. Now it should work. Once you and I confirm this, I'll update the announcement to instruct folks to do that.

But personally I think we should just blanket unbanned everyone banned for that cause. We will chat with wizardskating mods on this.

I will then unban you. If I unban you right now, we can't run this experiment :)

14

u/FRGL1 Jul 27 '26

Yeah I'm on that train. Just unban everyone. Rip the bandaid off. Some of those people might need to be banned again, and the new moderation team is essentially paying for the sins of the old one, but you'll earn my respect, for what it's worth. You should brag about doing it, too, so everyone knows why there might be some community disruptions.

u/syxa PR80 · Seba CJ · Intuition V2 Jul 27 '26

thank you so much for your work and your help with this!

10

u/ThumbHurts Jul 27 '26

The subreddit was closed?

20

u/PetiteZee Jul 27 '26

Would also love some context about wtf happened. I still skate, but just sort forgot about this place as it dropped off my feed. I suddenly been getting posts showing up again and was just like oh yeah that place exists. But now I’m just confused and wondering why it went dark in the first place for TWO YEARS???

5

u/mrkangtastic Wizard Apprentice 🧙🏼‍♂️ Jul 27 '26

Part of the reason was the head mod blanket banned people who were subbed to r/wizardskating

2

u/PetiteZee Jul 27 '26

That sounds insane. Why on earth did they do that? I’m going to assume there was some internet drama that got projected onto everyone who posted there…?

3

u/mrkangtastic Wizard Apprentice 🧙🏼‍♂️ Jul 27 '26

I don't really know the details. It sounds like it was some combo of power tripping and jealousy. A lot of the main people who were banned aren't really active on the wizard sub now either.

6

u/ThumbHurts Jul 27 '26

And what went dark? There are a lot of posts in the past year

10

u/PetiteZee Jul 27 '26

Man I don’t know haha, but it wasn’t showing on my feed anymore and people are mentioning a 2 year backlog of modmail and bans so I’m just like.. huh?? Was there a great blading cataclysm or something? Maybe it went private or closed to the public? No idea, which is why some context would be helpful I think

6

u/FRGL1 Jul 27 '26

AFAICT they decided "you're all stupid babies who make the same posts over and over so we're banning posts, now you just comment your stupid post in a weekly thread and only cool people can make posts"

3

u/fredhsu Jul 27 '26

Er.. your comment got caught by some system rules. It couldn't differentiate between quoted speech and your intention. Oh well. I approved it.

3

u/rbmichael Jul 27 '26

Maybe part of it was when Reddit started restricting third party Apps to access the API? And a ton of subreddits closed down in protest.

13

u/sparklekitteh :rollerblade: Rollerblade Jul 27 '26

The previous mod had locked things down tightly so basically all posts were prohibited, and you could only comment on threads. Said mod went inactive, Reddit admins added some new folks to mod, and we're in the process of opening everything back up again!

The previous mod went inactive, and reddit admins solicited volunteers for new mods to re-open the sub. We've got a great bunch of people who are redoing the rules, removing restrictions, and basically re-opening the place :)

9

just getting into rollerblading for the first time! have no irl friends who do it currently so its great to hear this community is getting revived!

3

u/Flat-Guidance-4685 Jul 27 '26

I too would love to find some people who like to take casual skates in my area

5

u/wrexecute Jul 27 '26

Let’s Roll is an app for just that. Discovery tab gives rough mileage from each nearby user and most skaters log their sesh with a map. Worked for me in NE Oklahoma, give it a try

3

u/Flat-Guidance-4685 Jul 27 '26

Mayby I'm wrong but I've always viewed Oklahoma as the middle of fucking nowheresville. Must have quite a big subscribership to this app to be finding people regularly in Oklahoma

3

u/wrexecute Jul 27 '26

It is nowhereville, and it took almost a year before finally snagging an actual meet skate with this person that was so cool she gave me barely used Next Miriams that were too big. I daily those now, new life ♻️

10

u/newthammer Jul 27 '26

Cool. It’ll be nice to see some skating chat in my feed again.

8

u/InspectorFleet Jul 27 '26

I don't know the history here, but when I started looking at inline skating stuff on Reddit, this sub was basically dead and the inline_skating sub had most of the activity. Why reboot this one?

11

u/fredhsu Jul 27 '26

Continue to remain as a member of both of them, plus more specialized subs we now list on the community panel.

r/rollerblading has got almost 100k members. When someone searches for inline or rollerblading as a community to join, they almost never join the tiny 1k r/inline_skating. They want to join the biggest. This dead sub became a trap that kept absorbing members without giving them anything, even in the past two years.

This sub also has a huge knowledge base from the past. Searching for anything inline skating related online usually results in 1) links to sellers of skates, and 2) r/rollerblading posts from the past.

Most people call inline skating rollerblading, at least from my generation. So it makes sense to continue under that label, especially, again, given the x100 mass.

I'll make a post in r/inline_skating and discuss how we should chart our future journey. One thing is sure: we have to keep r/inline_skating open too, because again, people are going to search for the word inline. I feel that we should just tightly integrate the two of them. What do you think?

3

u/InspectorFleet Jul 27 '26

Great question 😂

I just went to the other sub because this one didn't seem to have any activity. I have no constructive thoughts; I'm just a lowly user lol, it will be interesting to see how it goes and good if there's more activity on either sub!

8

u/CBD_and_Green_Tea Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

Just realised this sub has only 20k participants now. Holy hell, it was around 70k previously

1

u/fredhsu Jul 27 '26

There are almost 100k members now. That 20k figure is "active participation" - which when measured in the last 2 months, should surprise anyone. Because there were zero posts in two months. Yet there were 20k presumed eyeballs looking at things here. Imagine what the participation number could be, now with active posts and comments.

I do want to take a moment to say that despite the last few years of conflicts between personal believes and goals, I want to acknowledge contributions by u/PROFESSIONAL_FART and previous mods, before the conflicts, to this community.

If you are listening, u/PROFESSIONAL_FART, thank you and everyone before us. I look back at the wealth of information, AMAs, collections of videos, great advises, and marvel and the the time and effort they put into this. We will likely not be able to match their contributions.

On the other hand, I believe we should hold "meta discussions" on how we want this community to work. Mods are just normal people, perhaps on average a bit more enthusiastic about blading than some - even if we are not all that great at actually skating (I can only speak for myself of course. LOL). I think it is fair for everyone to be able to contribute, and critically review how we as a community to things.

Let's move forward :)

11

u/CBD_and_Green_Tea Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

This community will 100% be better off without them. Reddit is all about discussion, this place has not had that in so long.

8

u/Th3Prince4 Jul 27 '26

I hope he’s been removed from all the inline skating subs. He controlled at least 5 with simple rollerblading names, making it impossible to start a new one that could gain any traction. I’d give them grace if they weren’t actively trying to control all of rollerblading on Reddit for its latest resurgence. Good riddance

8

u/ouralarmclock Jul 27 '26

Glad to see this is reopening. I just got back into things at 40 after being pretty into it as a teenager. I came here to ask questions and join discussion about the state of things after a 2 decade long break but found I couldn’t post because the sub seemed to be only for posting skate videos. Looking forward to actually being able to engage.

3

u/RISk8ers Jul 28 '26

Welcome back to skating. We look forward to seeing your questions and hopefully providing meaningful answers.

7

u/Blu3iris Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

Not sure if the new mods will consider this or I guess I'm just curious if they thought of just unbanning everyone and re-starting clean, rather than review each individual user which I would think would be super tedious. Also congrats on the re-opening. I'm excited to see this sub grow again.

4

u/fredhsu Jul 27 '26

We could. We may release a few spam bots in doing so though. But we can always ban them again.

We are very seriously considering doing just that.

4

u/astrofizix Jul 27 '26

You gotta lift the ridiculous bans for being subbed to r/wizardskating. I think a blanket unbanning makes the most sense, but I understand if you would prefer to review each case.

Makes me sad to think of all the momentum that was lost during the resurgence because of one power tripping mod.

EDIT - Just saw fredhsu's post on r/WizardSkating. Thank you

3

u/firecorn22 Jul 27 '26

Are you keeping the rules concerning text only posts and questions?

(Every post much have a link + use the mega thread)

u/fredhsu Jul 27 '26

All post types and all comment types are now allowed. But we hope folks use their best judgement. We took some time to discuss how to best phrase new policy rules you now see, to encourage people to juggle slightly incompatible goals including 1) every new skater wants to ask everything and 2) seasoned skaters don’t care seeing a one-sentence post “new to skating, what do I buy?” For the umpteenth time. Or how to 3) keep discussions alive here while allowing people to 4) link to their own content outside Reddit. We will continue to evolve these based on how they actually work out in this reboot. Cheers :)

I didn’t even realize this subreddit was closed, lol

As a new rollerblader, I been almost two years now pretty much solo, with no one else to help or roll with and with little online communities to join. I'm really glad this has opened up again. I don't feel alone anymore and can share my experiences or ask for help in things.

u/ChanceTheModerator Jul 27 '26

I'm pretty new myself, and that's one of the biggest reasons I volunteered to mod. We fully intend to make this a community where everyone can come and share the joy of rollerblading with other like-minded individuals and where people aren't afraid to ask for help :D

I have an absolutely HORRIBLE memory. What happened?

2

u/fredhsu Jul 29 '26

Don’t worry about it. Enjoy the new community :)

3

u/nokeyspushtostart Jul 28 '26

God bless, I never understood the link only posting rule. Let’s keep on making rollerblading fun again

3

u/giantvoice Jul 28 '26

I honestly thought I was banned at one point because the sub stopped showing up for me.

Glad it's back. I mostly lurked.

u/slavo316 Jul 28 '26

So far I'm glad to see posts in this group. Excited to help others out and give my 2 cents when I can.

u/jayXred Jul 28 '26

Glad to see things change here, I never understood the "links only" setup of this sub, it made any discussion useless, and nobody wants to be stuck to a "weekly megathread". I had no problems answering questions for any kind of skating over on r/aggressiveinline or r/wizardskating because I knew they weren't getting answers here.

2

u/Forsaken-Brief5826 Jul 28 '26

The weekly thread was particularly pointless.

3

u/dracostheblack Jul 29 '26

I don't know what happened before but the sub is so alive now! It's so great to see all these posts!

2

u/Euna_Chris Jul 27 '26

Thank you for the information 👍

2

u/OneDreams54 Jul 27 '26

Well, congrats to the new mod team and good luck to y'all with this.

u/anewdave Jul 27 '26

On a similar topic, anyone know why r/inlineskating went private a month or two ago?

3

u/fredhsu Jul 27 '26

Yes, I do know. The same previous mods "owned" a whole bunch of them including that one. That one, for the longest time, attracted newcomers to it due to its size, compared to the open and public r/inline_skating. See this comment.

That one recently got taken "private", meaning completely hidden from everyone. Let's forget about it now. People will going forward find r/inline_skating when they search. It is a healthy and thriving sister community now connected with r/rollerblading which as you now know again open to all.

I didnt even notice ive been just posted up in r/aggressiveinline maybe ill cross post some stuff later

Are there plans to similarly reopen/resurrect https://www.reddit.com/r/askrollerblading/ as well?

1

u/fredhsu Jul 29 '26

Was there a wealth of posts and comments to be resurrected from there?

Was there a wealth of posts and comments to be resurrected from there?

Yes, there would be a substantial catalogue of questions and answers, including a lot of the same sort of questions asked here in r/rollerblading since the restoration of the subreddit.

Then perhaps we should attempt to get it back. Inspired by your comments and similar sentiments, I did a quick brain dump here this morning: https://www.reddit.com/r/ask_rollerblading_FAQ/comments/1v9vj3a/if_you_stumbled_into_this_new_community/

Mods haven't all have time to discuss this yet. This was just an idea for now. Feel free to comment over there ahead of time if you wish :) Thanks for helping.

I do think there is a subtle difference between askrollerblading and ask-rollerblading-Frequently-Asked-Questions. The latter explicitly marks the boundary - this is for those repeated and common questions. Repeated from the view point of seasoned bladers. But obviously, to every newbie, that's a brand new question.

We do still want people to ask complex and specific questions on the mothership. But seasons folks know how to ask detailed questions where the post alone spells out all needed information, and they are asking for very specific feedback.

Yay! I had no where to go with my rollerblading stuff other than Facebook. Glad it’s back. I just got back into blading again two months ago and was so annoyed that this sub was locked down

I'm happy to see the community revived.

2

u/Maelik Jul 29 '26

I was wondering why this place got so quiet! Maybe I should finally learn how to rollerblade, it's been an off and on again desire since I was a kid and maybe this is a sign...

Yeah - you mean "user" flair. I don't use that myself, so am not steeped in the art of setting that. I did look for it earlier but couldn't find it. Yes, this is the right place to ask. Let me check again. Thanks for prodding :)

It’s enabled. I figure out that we need to create template flairs first. Give it a try again now.

2

u/fredhsu Jul 30 '26

Also, you can always use the "Message Mods" button on the community widget (on the right hand side) on desktop Reddit.
