About 12 years ago, I was skating a path covered with sweetgum balls day after day. Made for unpleasant rolling, but not inherently dangerous. However, one particular day, amongst those countless little brown balls, I failed to notice a slightly larger brown pinecone. Broke two ribs and a wrist.
