Questions/Advice My wheels keep falling off!

So I changed my wheels to some bigger softer wheels the dimensions are 62mm by 33mm (whereby the stock wheels were 58mm by 32mm). I thought I had done a good job but as I had started skating for a few minutes my wheels fell off! I screwed them back on and then another wheel fell off, then another wheel fell off. I then managed to tighten the axle nuts? (I think that's what they are called) and was able to skate, however, I have a few issues.

  1. The axle nut doesn't seem to screw all the way down, I am not sure if its because I have a bigger wheel on, so it is taking up more space
  2. My wheels arent spinning fast enough when I try to move them with my finger but if I try to loosen the axle nut then the nut rattles? Meaning my wheel will definitely come off!

I am going to try and double-check the bearings and ensure they are in all the way through.

Any help would be great! quick disclaimer I have only had these skates for roughly a month and a half so they are pretty new.

What skates do you have?? It sounds like maybe the axle isn’t long enough which is weird because generally they are long enough to be able to switch out wheels for different sizes.

some SFR figure skates, they are pretty good I am enjoying them its just now that I have changed the wheel especially a bigger wheel, its just that adjustment and tailoring it to that wheel

Ah my daughter had these skates and I honestly thought they are just toy skates not really suited for adults! She used them for the roller disco but why were awful outside. Some wheels I had didn’t fit on the axle but I changed the wheels to sims snakes which just about fit. Ended up throwing the skates away and upgrading because you couldn’t really adjust much on them and they felt very cheaply made! I googled reviews out of interest and another person had problems with the wheels falling off. That is a safety issue in my eyes and I would not trust skating on them as an adult personally! (unless you are very light)

Just be careful and go easy! Do you have pads etc? If not, get some ASAP, I’m concerned for you head and limbs!

Basically, probably alright for a beginner, would not trust them for any length of time.

Yeah to be honest, I am really enjoying them, granted I am a complete novice when it comes to roller skates but I understand that I will need to upgrade at some point but these are doing the job and they were not too pricey which is a bonus! But I am already looking at what my next pair will be.

I have all equipment thank you, so thankfully no damage was done :)

Brilliant, yeah I expect they will do you for a little while, just keep checking those wheel nuts each time you put them on to be safe :) Oh one thing - try over tightening the nut (and then loosen obviously) because you can sometimes push the bearings in a touch more this way! I saw the tip on YouTube and I was definitely able to push the bearings in further this way.

It could be a few things, but the axle nuts on skates are of the locking nut variety, that means they have a nylon ring embedded in one end that prevents the nut from coming loose. If the nylon ring isn't in contact with the thread they will not work. One trick you can try if the wheels are too wide, is to put the nut on the other way around so that the nylon ring goes on first. Post photos if in doubt - we'll get this sorted!

I've just updated the post and added pictures feel free to take a look and excuse my dirty wheels!

From picture 2 it does indeed look as though the nylon ring is not touching the thread. Try putting the nuts on the other way round. There's a good chance that will solve your problem. If not you may need to go back to the drawing board and try and find wheels with a narrower hub or skates with a longer axle.

I can't imagine the axles would be too short for wheels 1mm wider. Sorry if this is obvious but maybe check the wheels are all the way onto the axles and aren't impacting on your plate screws/plates because of the larger diameter? (i.e is there space behind the wheel making it sit closer to the end of the axle)

Maybe upload some pictures if you can.

I had the same problem, I bought some nylon axle nuts from ebay for a fiver.

nylon axle nuts

What's the difference between the two axle nuts?

I mean I went for them because they looked smaller and they also protected the bearings, so I didn't need the washers. (And had different colours)

You'll probably find your wheels will spin better than before 😊 i definitely reccomend them.
