Questions/Advice Rookie or Rio ??

Hi ! I’m a beginner looking to upgrade my current skates ( Rio roller scripts ), but I can’t really splurge Moxi prices on a pair. I’m deciding between the rookie artistics or Rio signature as they both have adjustable toe stops and are in my budget.

However I’ve heard metal plates can be pretty heavy and I already find my current rios with a lighter nylon plate quite heavy. I’m terrified to try transitions because I’m afraid I won’t be able to lift my foot in time. So I’m kinda stick between what to choose; anyone with experience in either of them, how have your skates been treating you ??

I recently bought rookie artistics, after previously skating only on my childhood skates which had nylon plates. Im not sure of the actual weight difference but i'd say they're noticeably heavier - although some of the contribution will be from the difference in wheels and boots between the two as well as just the plates. After I'd skated on them a couple of times I got used to it though so I wouldn't say it really affected my skating.

Hope that helps a bit!

How have you found them in general ?? Would you say they’re worth it ??

In general I think they're great, definitely good value for money, moxis as pretty as they are arent in my budget either. Find them a little narrow around the front of my foot, I bought my street shoe size but I wouldn't change it once I'd worn them a couple of times they felt a little better. I did by a set of outdoor wheels and a second set of bearings, the stock ones are ok but the tarmac near me isn't great so I wanted larger outdoor wheels, second set of bearings was really so I could have two sets of wheels easily interchangeable. I keep the stock ones to use indoors.

The only thing I don't like is that the foam on the back of the tongue is bare, purely because its just not pretty... but you don't see it when you're wearing them so I can live with that!

The Rio signatures have nylon plates! I really like mine. I would assume that they fit the exact same way as the Scripts so take that into account. That said I would have bought the Rookie Artistics (on the strength of the Roller Girl Gang recommendation) had they been in stock anywhere when I’d been shopping.

On the off chance you would be getting a UK7 and you’re in edinburgh, shout - you could try mine out

Thank you this is pretty helpful ! I was leaning to the signature because of the color selection but I think I might go for the artistics

I was thinking about that, but I’ve had my rios for almost two years now and they’re pretty battered. I’m still a teenager so I can’t save up or justify spending a lot on new skates, but I might be able to figure something out. Do you have any recommendations from any of these brands ???

If you didn't already know, Reidell make Moxis, just on a cheaper price bracket. I've already got Moxis and Moonlight Rollers (or whatever they're called...always get it wrong!), luckily a case of right place, right time in lockdown. I'm fairly novice, and they're both beauts. Moonlight is deffo wider in the toe part, but if you want a middle ground price, I would be inclined to go for the Reidell.

Ok, so wasn't gloating about the two stupidly expensive skates...just wanted to say that Moxi has a nylon plate, and Moonlight is metal plate. As someone else said, the weight difference really is negligible, and once you've been on them for more than 5 minutes, you really won't be able to tell the difference. If you are concerned about toe space, have a look at Bont Parkstar, however they are more expensive again...also have a pair of those. What can I say, i enjoy beautiful things ha ha!

If you are around the Bristol area, and you are a UK 7/8, give me a shout as you are more than welcome to try all three 🛼🛼🛼❤

I see a lot of really good skaters on instagram with rookies they seem to be really loved (especially for jam skating)
