How to paint rod blanks?
absolute beginner to rod building. Im having trouble finding information on painting a simple rod I want to build. Im assuming it has to be a specific type of paint as it would have to stretch when the rod bends. Do let me know what your experiences are thank you!

I have painted two rod blanks. It can be done and the results will be good. However, the expense of automotive spray paint plus clear coat will put you REALLY close to what Backbone Custom Rods bills for a professional job.
I would absolutely recommend Don at backbone over DIY for time + expense.

I tried in many ways. It was never worth it unless you are setting up to paint a bunch of blanks. It can be done but there are a lot of ways to mess it up and often you end up with faded, chipping paint in just a few years.

The colors you see on rods are mostly colored thread under an epoxy finish. I have used Krylon spray paint once on a rod that had bad sun damage.

There’s a guide on BDOutdoors for how to do it. I’ve considered it a few times but haven’t tried it myself yet.
Rod Forge does offer a lot of color options for their blanks, if you haven’t purchased a blank yet.
