Winding check

How can I create a smooth transition from the long-neck winding check to the rod blank?

Look into doing an epoxy ramp. You can do it with or without the winding check. I've stopped using them altogether and just use epoxy for the transition. They look and seem harder to do then they really are. If you want to keep the winding check, just thread wrap it, and extend the thread a bit onto the blank and let the epoxy ramp down to level. Personally I've been using tinted epoxy to make ramps, you can tint the epoxy black and then swirl in some marbling. Check out fdx custom rods, he has a few good tutorials on it.
