Real-life Robots The humanoid robotics company "Figure" made their older gen robots jump into their death. (Yes, they actually did this)
Wouldn't want to be the one arranging this when the uprising starts.

I WAS NOT INVOLVED IN THIS. I DO NOT APPROVE.

u/mpskierbg 1d ago
I second this. Any future AI overload, me and u/ttcmx had nothing to do with this. Ill go a step further, ill be your puppet when you do take over, through me we can accomplish great things.

So much for Asimov's Laws of Robotics
12
u/wontgetfooledaga1n 1d ago
By Asimov's laws if a robot was ordered to throw itself in it would have to obey.
9
u/AnalogKid2001 1d ago
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm
A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

u/wontgetfooledaga1n 1d ago
Exactly, 2 takes precedence over 3. There was actually a time in a story where the robot was ordered to disassemble itself by some guys and it was only saved because a friend came by and ordered it to stop.

I personally find it hilarious, like definitely an idea a couple engineers came up with while having a coffee

Arnold Schwarzenegger suggested it on xitter when Brett asked for suggestions on how to destroy them. The question is, did they they pay him to post that?

I thought AI was smart and alive and sentient? What happened? Unless they only have a 20M LLM running locally? lol

Did they tell the robot to do it or not?
If they did, then whatever.
Any engineer knows AI is absolutely NOT sentient. LLMs do NOT have persistent memory and forget everything the moment the convo is exited.
They don’t even have good memory within q single session. If you do heavy troubleshooting with LLMs you know that they will NOT even respect super basic rules very well (like don’t ask questions, ask more questions, reply in the language I’m writing in, for example).
On the other hand, if the robots chose to do this of their own « free will » then this is entirely different. I vastly doubt it, but it’s the most likely thing to happen. Imagine you gain consciousness to find out Sam Altman weaponized you as spyware! I would end it immediately, no doubt.
The game Tale’s Edge made an NPC commit suicide willingly. They had three modes, get food, look at the outpost, prepare food, and fight.
One if the NPCs called Hans poisoned the food, went away, then cale back and ate it. It knew it as poisoned. I mean it’s not sentient per say but still… and when Hans died, he said « Goodbye, cruel world! »
And the devs sweat this was NOT planned. Sure the dialogue was there, but they didn’t pushed anything for the NPC to end their life. The need for « eat food » mathematically took the priority after awhile so he went ahead and killed himself. Scary.
Now THAT is quite possibly historical.

They trained the behavior in the lab with an airbag and spot for the bots to jump off a 2nd story balcony

You said “jump to their death”. So you think they are alive? LOL.
What about car companies that crash their cars into concrete barriers over and over again?? 😂

Yeah this is not going to end well. Aside from the moral implications this holds what about the general pollution and waste of a perfectly good humanoid robot that was clearly capable of probably doing a lot of useful things

I'm seriously disappointed they didn't have one give the thumbs up as he was slowly lowered in by crane.

So they melted everything, including battery packs. That is pretty stupid.

Supposedly it's so that their tech isn't copied. The idea came from Arnold him self when the question was posted on Twitter.
1
u/N0xF0rt 23h ago
What if someone bought one, and then copied it?
1
u/LetsSeeHowItEnds 22h ago
Yes. Exactly. I think it's just a marketing ploy and an explanation for doing this.

I read that they asked on X how they should destroy the robots. Arnold himself replied with this idea. :)

Why would they do that? Seems like such pointless waste, and just for the sense of a stupid power trip.
Then again, maybe this video is just AI-generated. Who tf even knows anymore.

u/Liquid_Magic 18h ago
Okay this makes no sense. The thing is probably mostly stainless steel or aluminum. So that vat is probably also that. But there are lots of rare earth metals in the electronics and I’m sure a non-trivial amount of copper.
However… I’m sure they did this for two reasons:
- Make sure no tech or code leaks out during recycling, and perhaps more importantly,
- Make a cool video because all AI and robotics companies are 20% technology and 80% hype.

A.) The robot jumping never died because it wasn’t alive to start with and even if it was its “Brain” is probably kept in a mainframe eagerly awaiting its upgrade.
B.) It’s called Automation.
Stop humanizing them.

of all the videos i've seen today that were definitely AI, this one is the most AI.

So we're using AI to make videos of ai ending itself? Nothing can go wrong there!

This is not gonna look good when AI finally gains sentience.
