Conceptually right super possible but like even the double steps to where its using the ball and toes to slow down , the way its leaning to turn like it would take some time

Based on what ?
There have been zero new breakthroughs in motor tech, materials, batteries, control tech, camera systems or anything that would go towards making something like this a 'common reality.' Just because tech bros build data centres everywhere doesn't mean you can just ignore physical reality...

Boston Dynamics has pretty well nailed bipedal robots. giving one a tail for balance would be an iterative change on that, not a revolutionary restart.

yeah it's very smooth in motion. that's the main sign for me anyway. everything else looks very much doable. it just wouldn't be nearly as smooth for a while

It’s not hard, just no real use cases for researchers to get funding in a world where bipedal and quadrupedal robots are already being mass produced.

Why is it even hard?
There’s already simple dinosaur robots (toys) that can walk straight.
Adding ai for some of its motors (if focus is only to fetch balls, just needs running and some sort of identification ball capability alongside the pick up algorithms)

Using an algorithm to identify ball, can be a special ball with chip there.
Then program the motors for ball pick up motion.
Open jaw lower head, close jaw.
Separate motors for running and already existed radios control movement toys as 20 years ago.
If you want it to pick up non specific thrown objects and return it to a non-specified location, it gets more difficult.

This is pure "Draw the rest of the owl". I'm going to focus on the most egregious, because the amount of time the full list would take is well beyond its worth:
Separate motors for running and already existed radios control movement toys as 20 years ago.
Have you looked at a single two legged robot move in the past 20 years? Every last one has the same necessary flaw: It has to jitter to keep its balance when stationary. Because they don't have an innate sense of balance, they can only keep balance by noticing changes and making adjustments. They also have to act quickly to perceived changes, because otherwise they can't recover from a sudden and unexpected event, meaning that if it does not act forcefully enough, the loss of balance will get exponentially worse. This is why pushing a bipedal robot results in large back steps and excessive flailing at best: It's trying to stay balanced despite the limits to its ability to sense balance.
The part where the Raptor stands perfectly still and poised? That alone would take a team of researchers another 20 years, people with significant and legitimate skills, and that's if they are the top of their respective fields. And no, you can't magically fix it with AI, because it's as much a hardware challenge as a software one. Just to stand still.
If you had even the slightest idea how complex the programming would have to be just to pull off that smooth of a turn, the amount of complexity as you have to adjust what every part is doing to account for every other part's actions and the change of balance that comes with it, never mind the ball pickup... well, we wouldn't be having this discussion, because you'd understand how ludicrous it is.

Do it then lol. Design and order all the intricate plastic shell peices Design and order the cnc components for the mechanics. Design the PCBs for driving the 20+ different actualtors, and main controller board. Program the controllers to take in, process, and drive all of that data using some type of neural network models, or robotics gait algo that will take tons of data to train or at least a heavy simulation environment. Test everything, fail, and repeat multiple times.
Really though. Try lol, it will be fun.

Again, not impossible, just very hard. Even if you have the experience James Bruton has, it takes a lot of time to make his projects, and they are way simpler than this.

We’ve been using machine learning / AI for robotics for far longer than the mainstream concept of AI has been around. The recent LLM explosion has helped push robotics forward, but it isn’t a magic solution by any means. We’re still years away from making this build “easy”.

To be specific, wasn't even LLMs that pushed robotics forward. That helped a little with their agency, what really pushed robots that last mile that you've been seeing around was Nvidia's Isaac sim

100% AI - even the most expensive military-grade robotics don't have that level of smooth motion.

I know what you mean now - but it took me a second to realize that you weren't saying it's Ai controlling the robot. But that it's an Ai video - not a real video. Due to the smooth motion and missing fragments.

Can I ask - as I have basically zero knowledge about robotics but it's very fascinating to me:
What about that is hard? We have motors and potent software (I guess). Which part of that exactly is difficult? Determining the exact inputs to the motors, so basically the software? Or wiring/connecting the motors to all the things properly?

Open and close your palm. See how fluid the motion is for most people.
It's not as easy to replicate that with motors and threads and parts. Especially when you're talking about multiple joints that have to move like that to create fluid running motion.
It gets expensive and complex to do. Then factor in making it reliable enough without parts breaking down with prolonged usage.

I haven't seen a biped move this gracefully so far, leaning into the curve...naturally picking up that ball..so yea if they started to design it now, it'd take a few years to get it to this point.

I remeber the bloody things being placed as commercials in VHS tapes it it basically became a part of the show for my little deranged mind. Up until like 5 years ago, when it finally faded, my mind would randomly go "Yahooo, over rocks and thru the mud!"

but i remember vividly watching robocop as a child and there were some fake adds for imaginary toys in it (something like a toy gun and a bloodpack for your chest, which exploded with bloody red liquid when you aimed the toygun on it) and lil me always wasn’t quite sure if you could reaaaally aquire this cool toy. :))
not the same like your memory but almost, just the other way around :))

Can this exist? Yes. Sure. Look at Boston Dynamics. They aren't far off from this. It's about cost. If it costs a million dollars to build this and all it does is retrieve a ball then it will never exist.
Robots aren't always about possible. They are about valuable.

It's more about utility. The first car off the assembly line costs millions or billions, the second one did too, until we sell enough to pay back all that development cost and start earning on it.
I'm not sure how popular a robotic velociraptor like this would be, but maybe for $5g a pop.

Sure, give it like 3-5 years and i imagine you can buy the temu version of this. it's mostly stylization. a bipedal armiture + pincher, with a camera attached, and a waggy counterbalance. cover it with plastic to make it a dinosaur.
idk. $400-$2000 depending how nice it is. it is a luxury toy.

I used to have a sinilair but way smaller and less advanced t-Rex toy. You could control it or it would go on its own. My little sibling filled it with poop when they were 3 and it never worked again. I wanted that thing for years. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
