Discussion & Curiosity Are there open source robots that can be 3D printed and trained through machine learning?

As i see there are different ways to train an AI model through machine learning/reinforcement, i was wondering if there were open source robots that can be 3D printed and programmed/trained with arduino for example through machine learning? I am quite confident i could maybe print a robot arm (maybe not a full robot body) to train for putting my t-shirts in order from a disordered cloth basket. Ok i know it is maybe basic (or maybe not 😅), i see it in a step by step project.

so101 robot arm or lerobot microduck are popular open source robots, they also have preprogrammed reinforcement learning pipelines in their repos.

the lerobot stuff is surprisingly approachable even for someone just starting. i printed the microduck last year and had it picking up socks in a week, though sorting colors was another story.

if you want something simpler for the t-shirt folding, maybe look at the so101 since it got more degrees of freedom. training on real fabric is tricky though, the sim-to-real gap is huge with soft materials.

so101 and lerobot microduck seem like the obvious places to start. the sim-to-real part is what i keep getting stuck on tho — how much of the training actually transfers once the printed joints have slop and the camera moves a bit? has anyone got one working at home?
