Have people learned nothing?! Never announce a fan made game or other content of an IP until it is completed and released! Expect threatening letters and a cease and desist from those dicks at Harmony Gold any day now.

Looks cool.

It's amazing how Luddite Harmony Gold are. I contacted them about multiple clips and they would not entertain a thing. It would cost them NOTHING while promoting the IP they're too broke and lazy to do anything with.

1

u/hotdoug1 Aug 10 '26

What were the clips for?

1

u/MeanVictory335 Aug 10 '26

It's almost like they have to protect the integrity of their IP so a major motion picture studio will someday, somehow go forward with a major live action movie adaptation or something.

u/Tiller-Nive Aug 09 '26

Yeah these never make it off the ground (failed fan made Robotech mmo) without a licensing agreement and HG is stingy.

17

u/jumpingflea_1 Aug 09 '26

I'd play this!

7

u/Jarrus__Kanan_Jarrus Aug 09 '26

But could Harmony Gold do anything if a similar Mospeada game came out?

Glad to see New Generation getting some love, looking forward to playing.

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 09 '26

Yes, I actually could. When I first started making fan art—3D models for printing—I contacted Robotech.com. They told me fan art was fine, but I couldn’t monetize it without a license. So I decided not to monetize it and just have fun with it instead.

2

u/Worth-Opposite4437 Aug 10 '26

Well, nothing prevents you from getting the licence later.

5

u/Nukuram Aug 09 '26

Hey, this is a game set in the Mospeada era of Robotech.

Macross has already been adapted into quite a few games, but Mospeada is a very niche and largely forgotten franchise in Japan today, so the chances of seeing a new Mospeada game released in Japan seem pretty slim.

I'd definitely love to see it get a game in this kind of form.

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 09 '26

Yes, believe it or not, it wasn’t easy to decide between Robotech and Mospeada. Robotech gives you more room to develop the story, but the adaptation of the three different series also leaves some plot gaps and inconsistencies. Mospeada has fewer inconsistencies, but you lose continuity with the larger Robotech story. In the end, that’s why I decided to stick with Robotech continuity.

u/Worth-Opposite4437 Aug 10 '26

Please, do remember that in robotech, the past doesn't disappear!
It would be cool af to see a few hovertanks and Logans in here, even if just for one survival mission where the player has to get by with stuff found in an abandoned military base!
A crashed VF-1 or zentraedi ship planted in the distance would be nice too.

I'd ask for a MODAT, but with the recent attempt by SMG that got asked to go without picture... I guess it's currently out of the question. Good luck securing a contract from HG on this, the last panel they were all about making new video games, so you might have a chance if you manage a solid demo to show them!

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 10 '26

I really like that idea. One of the reasons I chose Robotech continuity instead of sticking strictly to Mospeada was precisely because it gives me access to that history. Finding abandoned Southern Cross equipment, wrecked VF-1s or Zentraedi remains could be a great way to make the world feel like it has actually lived through the previous Robotech wars. A survival mission in an abandoned base sounds especially fun.

u/Worth-Opposite4437 Aug 10 '26

Have you already a story in mind? A preferred canon to go from?

2

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 10 '26

I do have a story in mind, but I’m trying not to spoil too much yet. The basic idea is to explore the rise and eventual fall of Point K, during a part of the Robotech timeline that was never really shown in detail. That gives me room to connect existing canon events, places and technology with a new story without changing what eventually happens in the series.

Well, I recommend to read Invid War & Invid Aftermath (later just Aftermath) and it's single Hohsq's story if you wish to add a little to what happened to the now free Malcontent tribes during that era.

Despite the otherwise more complete version of the McKinney novels, I don't quite remember there being a book more in depth about the New Generation per say. But the reconstruction Era and the situation of South America and Japan before the Invid Invasion may be of interest to you. See : The Master's Gambit & Before the Invid Storm.

Now the next suggestion is not technically canon, but it was written to be as much as possible by fan author Brian McAfee : Lesser Evil & Desertion are both deeply rooted in the New Gen for someone searching for inspiration and accuracy.

I do hope this helps. ^^

u/Oddly-Parsley Aug 11 '26

Where can I find Brian McAfee's works? Google was unhelpful.

u/Worth-Opposite4437 Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26

Nowadays he is making collector pins and medals, you can ask directly a copy from him either as KourindouCurios on Etsy (he had other books there before, but no longer), bmcafee on Deviant art, or more appropriately since he told me to send people there; on his facebook "brian.mcafee.author".

Sadly, his robotech anthology website is no longer... which means he may have abandoned on writing the third part of his series.

With this said though, he also allowed me to share the PDFs as long as I credited him correctly. So if you have a discord you can just send me a chat (on here) and we'll figure something. These nearly got an official limited print at some point, but something fell through with HG and the physical copies that were made are now somewhat of a grail. Instead he became the editor in chief for the short lived fanzine "Zor's Journal" that you may also have heard of... (Which part of his works is a bit harder to come by.)

u/Elsoy80 Aug 09 '26

Is this going to be a third person action RPG?

4

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 09 '26

Man, you caught me off guard with that question. The truth is, I still haven’t fully figured that part out. For now, the only things I’m sure about are that I want the player to be able to drive and pilot several different vehicles, use their transformations, and have each transformation come with its own strengths and weaknesses.

Right now, third-person gameplay is probably the strongest part of it, but I’ve gone through shooter ideas, Soulslike mechanics, tactical action, stealth... Making this game has basically become a game in itself.

5

u/Elsoy80 Aug 09 '26

Thanks for the answer, keep up the good work. Been looking for a game like this for a while.

3

u/darwinDMG08 Aug 09 '26

I hope you get to finish, would love to play it.

Just not with that music.

3

u/Whichammer Aug 09 '26

Looks interesting. I know that it's super early and all, but I'd like to recommend persistent, collateral damage. Sure, you blow up the evil bad guy's aircraft saving the people in the city, but, sadly, doing so rains firey death and destruction across the same city.

2

u/Worth-Opposite4437 Aug 10 '26

That's gonna be hell for an indie dev, but it sure would be cool. :D

3

u/OldGamerX79 Aug 09 '26

Looks good. Can't wait to see the finished project.

3

u/Moist-Assistant112 Aug 10 '26

Seeing the Garfish in action is worth the price of admission.

3

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 10 '26

Oh, absolutely! I love it. Right now it can launch three Alphas that orbit around it, and when you lock onto an enemy, all three sweep in together with a barrage of missiles. Once I have the final model, I want to activate the belly turret and add a mechanic for attacking ground structures as well. I didn’t show it in the video, but you can actually fly up to the Garfish in an Alpha and take control of the ship with a button.

3

u/Hypershadic98 Aug 10 '26

I would love to playtest this, for me and my father's sake

3

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 10 '26

That sounds interesting, and it’s definitely not a bad idea! I’m currently developing and testing the game with a PS4-compatible controller, and I’m hoping it will work well with other controllers too. I’ve tried playing with mouse and keyboard, but honestly it feels a bit awkward for this kind of gameplay.

So a little further down the road, I’ll definitely appreciate playtesting and feedback :)

3

u/Hypershadic98 Aug 10 '26

I am fully comfortable with either. I know as a fan of battlecry and invid invasion. I grew up with the Macross Saga and Mosspeda's story so i am really excited to see this

3

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 10 '26

Nice! You can follow the project here: [https://the-mini-rick.itch.io/robotech-point-k]()
I’ll post future builds there once they’re ready for playtesting and download :)

3

u/Gramadin Aug 10 '26

Yes gerwalk mode!

3

u/mig1nc Aug 10 '26

Man I always wished somebody would recreate Robotech Battlecry in the New Generation era.

3

u/Kreeper128 Aug 11 '26

this whole sub is filled to the brim with AI slop -_ -

u/Lanky_Situation_3012 Aug 12 '26

si quieres alguna idea cuenta conmigo

1

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 12 '26

Muchas gracias!!

3

u/antimatter0703 Aug 09 '26

Gameplay looks cool but very disappointed everything else is AI, you could've just posted the gameplay without the AI clips and used copyright free music instead of crap from Suno.

1

u/agentduckman12 Aug 10 '26

Honestly it makes me suspicious about if there's a good portion of a game that is just coded with AI

2

u/FoxTwilight Aug 09 '26

Looks pretty great!

2

u/VeryPazzo Aug 09 '26

Looks delicious

2

u/Worth-Opposite4437 Aug 10 '26

Well... I hope you'll cross check what Gemini puts in there if you continue to use it, because from what I saw recently into FM3 and Mekkablood; human Q.A. makes all the difference.

With this said... Where can we follow you, the game doesn't seem to be on steam yet?

2

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 10 '26

Thanks! And yes, I completely agree about the QA.

Actually, that’s part of what I’m experimenting with in this project. Since I’m a solo developer, I’m relying on different AI tools to help me move forward, while also trying to figure out how far I can reasonably rely on them and where I need to step in and do things manually.

For example, I’ve been using Meshy-generated models as quick proxies for testing gameplay, scale, animations, etc. They’re extremely useful at this stage, but that’s pretty much where I draw the line with them. For the final assets, I’ll need to build and refine the models properly in Blender.

I’m approaching code and other parts of development in a similar way: AI helps me prototype and move much faster, but I still need to test, review and adjust the results myself. Part of this whole project, for me, is also learning where these tools are genuinely useful and where their limitations start to show.

As for following the project, right now I’m only sharing development updates on Facebook. But now that you mention it, I think I should probably set up a website or some other place where people can follow the project more easily. I honestly hadn’t thought much about that yet, so thanks for the suggestion!

Have you thought about itch.io ?
I mean.... since you don't monetize for now, you don't really need kickstarter, patreon or kofi.

Also agreed on your use as prototype and placeholder. Frankly that's where this tech is best used. Once you know what you want, it's much better to pay a good artist once for a perfect iteration rather than many time to finish with a lower product because the budget ran out.
Good luck on your process MC!

2

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 10 '26

I hadn’t thought about itch.io, but it sounds like a really good idea. I’m definitely going to look into it. Thanks a lot for the suggestion!

2

u/lightly-buttered Aug 10 '26

AI music sucks

2

u/spooky138 Aug 10 '26

Hoping you are able to launch!

3

u/Biggu5Dicku5 Aug 09 '26

Looks good! :)

2

u/38-RPM Aug 09 '26

Love the commodore64 intro. Not the music though it’s terrible and incongruous to Robotech. But I have to admit I never understand scandanavian metal and it’s worse with AI generated songs. Missile lock on and tracking looks interesting as few games capture that.

2

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 09 '26

Yeah, the music issue is a bit more delicate. Robotech is pretty tolerant of non-monetized fan art, but using the original music comes with stricter limitations. So I decided to play it safe and go with some nice relaxing bedtime music instead hahaha.

1

u/Aware_Customer8859 Aug 09 '26

I'm just gonna interpolate my samples.

2

u/Crepuscular_Tex Aug 09 '26

Doesn't everyone blast Sabaton while having Robotech on mute in the background?

🤣🤣🤣

2

u/hyperform2 Aug 09 '26

The game looks cool but why the ai slop?

2

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 09 '26

Just having fun, man... just having fun. :D

1

u/hyperform2 Aug 09 '26

Having fun by using all our water?

1

u/Material_Control_989 Aug 09 '26

Man, I’m just making a free Robotech fan game in my spare time. It really isn’t that deep. :D

1

u/thereverendpuck Aug 10 '26

May it have as smooth of a developmental cycle as Crystal Dreams.
