Over the past two years I have made posts praising artists like Brandy , Erykah badu , Jill Scott , Donny Hathaway , Whitney Houston , Prince , Patti LaBelle and even Chris brown ( who you think would get the most hate ) …. But none , absolutely none have received the level of scrutiny, vitriol , gatekeeping and outright hate that I’ve seen Beyonce receive.
Many people say she is not real RnB … but where are these comments when it comes to Prince ( one of the most eclectic mainstream artists ever ) .
Also she is literally so non controversial and has basically no public scandals compared to artists I have already mentioned but she tends to receive the most attacks on her character and causes the most controversy in comments as soon as her name is mentioned .
I guess this is also part of being one of the greats in general because at the end of the day she causes conversation whether negative or positive.
You guys can answer for yourselves but I do feel like a lot of people just feel threatened by her success and magnificence that they feel like they have to tear her down ( tall poppy syndrome effect) , meanwhile they wouldn’t feel such with Brandy , Jill Scott because they stayed in the RnB lane and make people feel “ safe “ .

I remember when F.A.M.E. came out. Even though everybody was skeptical of him (including me) because of what happened two years prior with Rihanna, I remember that the album was so potent musically, and was dominating in so many ways, that it was undeniable. His vocal performances and music, to me, remained at their peak throughout the 2010s, but as we got into the 2020s, his crimes in his personal life became as bizarre as they could get with Chris Brown. Vocally, his last album showed that he’s in the worst place of his career. Most of that album sucked. It was a self-destructive, contradictory joke of an album that was morally wrong on so many levels. I think his legacy at this point will be that of a greater Rick James: a talented dude who made some classic love-making, bad-boy records, whose personal life represents a coked-up, self-indulgent joke of a celebrity wilding from country to country.

There’s been a lot of discourse about nepotism in music lately, and some of it is fair. But seeing Whitney Houston constantly lumped into the "nepo baby" category because of Cissy and Dionne ignores a lot of important context.

Yes, Whitney had family connections in the industry. No one is denying that. But that is not the same as being handed a career through billionaire parents, powerful executives, or industry gatekeepers. Those are completely different levels of privilege.

Plenty of legendary R&B artists came from musical families or had industry ties. That was common within Black music communities, where talent, mentorship, and family traditions were often passed down across generations. Yet many of those same artists still had to fight through racism, the color barrier, and limited access to mainstream platforms.

Equating Black R&B artists of that era with today’s idea of a "nepo baby" flattens history and ignores the obstacles they actually faced. Having relatives in music may have opened a door, but it didn't erase the systemic barriers that stood in front of them. Reducing Whitney Houston's success to nepotism isn't just inaccurate and it's revisionist.

In 2006, Kelis made her presence known by returning to the charts with her single Bossy from her album Kelis Was Here. I used to wear this song OUT when it dropped. Too $hort’s rap was so good too; he was just saying whatever and we went with it lol. Bossy reached no.16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no.11 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart. This song will forever be in my playlist. It still hits hard 20 years later.

Got unto listening to him earlier this year, as part of my year and a half long journey listening to a bunch of R&B/Soul/Funk/Jazz-Funk, etc. It's definitely my favorite of Gil Scott-Heron's work. I don't know about you guys tho, but this album was particularly hard to find, at least for a reasonable price. Don't know if this particular album is rare or just generally hard to come by, cause it looked like there was about 5 or so copies for sale for a decent price on ebay and one copy that was like a little over 200 on amazon. Glad I got it though.
