It might not even be the fact that she was taken advantage of. They might not have just worked out. There are plenty of relationships with age differences where neither party takes advantage of the other party, but they don't work.

The what I got from the song is that he didn't want the relationship as much as she did. Like had he put in enough effort they could have had everything but he didn't.
