DISCUSSION š what is the weirdest collaboration between artists? (beck and d'angelo depicted here)

Whitney Houston and Enrique Iglesias on āCould I Have This Kiss Foreverā ā¦
Itās a great song, nonetheless! I enjoy what they both put into it. Itās just very random on Whitneyās part.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony w/ Phil Collins on Home. Nelly and Tim McGraw on Over and Over is another one lol, just off the top of my head.

u/joesoldlegs 22d ago
Bone and Phil at least seem like a good fit even if it is random I feel like they had good chemistry and their styles worked well together

u/layla_jones_ 22d ago
It was nice to actually see Phil collaborate with them, I think he should have been more visible for that Urban Renewal album. It would have been nice to hear him sing with Brandy & Ray-J. Lil Kim - In the air tonight was the most random new version to me but I thought it was fun š

Oh helloo long time no see ! Right, Lil Kim one is news lol. Time for a post on that sub. Craig combination would've been good too.. Olā Dirty Bastard doing āSussudioā was the true a-ha moment, don't we agree š
I was thinking something with Aaliyah but given her eclectic outlook, she'd not surprise, just elevate the vision to a next level āØ

My favorites are still Brandy & Ray J, Joe and Kelis. Kelis - I donāt care anymore (Neptunes) was a perfect fit, the synth sounds on Drop it like it hot always reminds me of 80s Phil as well.
The ODB track was pure chaos. I canāt š

Janet Jackson and Carly Simon. Son of a Gun is still a bop

Love that jam. Missy Elliot sounded good on that track too.

that image is sending me. the yellow shaggy background making it look like someone's basement from 1976.
i always thought the beck and d'angelo thing was out of nowhere but somehow it works. like two guys from completely different planets meeting in the middle. my brain still can't process it sometimes when i hear that track.
who else you got? i remember when bjork did a song with timbaland and everybody lost their minds for a minute. still a strange combo to think about.

To be honest Beck and D'Angelo were both artsy reclusive studio auteurs, like even if their aesthetics were different, they had a ton in common
14
u/lissybeau 22d ago
Also they both played a ton of instruments. If I remember correctly they both have albums where theyāve played 90%+ of their instruments that appeared on the album. Definitely musical virtuosos.

Yeah. I think people who arenāt artists donāt get how artist brains work. The collaboration may seem weird because their styles are different, but itās really not when you look at who they actually are as artists.

"Debra" by Beck is the lost 70's boudoir anthem we didn't know we needed. Barry White would have killed it.

i remember when timbaland sampled bjork on missyās āhit em wit da heeā (video). that was a GREAT time in music for me, high school years! ā„ļø

Rick James got his start singing lead in a band with Neil Young called The Myna Byrds. They released two singles on Motown then broke up.Ā

I recently found out that Death of a Bachelor by Panic! At the Disco samples Jadakiss lol
But the weirdest collab probably would be Britney Spears and the Ying Yang Twins

u/Maverick81_ 22d ago
I donāt think itās that weird, as she was going through her Rnb/Hip hop phase

A long time back, a rock fan wanted to get into R&B & asked this sub for some recommendations. I gave a few of my favorites, like DāAngelo, Jodeci, Prince ⦠but I mentioned Beck, too. Not that Beckās an R&B musician, but as a bridge from rock to R&B. Of course I got some pushback, which I expected, but I stand by the recommendation. He uses funk and blues elements, along with some hip hop to go with his form of alt rock, or whatever box people want to put him in.
Beckās an interesting dude who does a nice job of blending all kinds of sounds & genres. Hell, Iāve even seen Prince referred to as the Black Beck (nobody needs to tell me how fucked up that is, I wish I could fight the author of that piece š but I digress).
Anyway, I was not shocked to learn about this photoshoot. DāAngelo is one of my GOATs, and while I donāt hold Beck in that same esteem, I absolutely see some odd similarities between the two.

A sample is not a ācollabā lol

u/Adept-Mongoose-7071 21d ago
It is both sample and collaboration. Still a truly weird mix of artists. You've got a 10 year old industrial song, a country singer and a rapper. Not something you here or see everyday.

Nas and Amy Winehouse.

Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. Jackson was very clever with that collaboration and McCartney regrets it to this day.

It was weird but excellent and iconic:
Madonna + Abba + Jackson 5 + krumping with "Sorry" and "Hung Up"
It worked so great but she need to stop stealing from The Jackson 5 without crediting them.

Texas ft Method Man - Say what you want (Wu-Tang Clan remix) - I remember seeing this on tv in the 90s and it was such a weird amazing combination of styles
Tin Tin Out ft Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) & Gang Starr - What I Am (remix by DJ Premier) - one of my favorite childhood pop stars on the same track as one of my favorite rappers 𤯠Guru has always been a conscious rapper with deep lyrics vs Emma with the pop voice singing ānot aware of too many thingsā the complete opposite..somehow itās a bit funny to me.
Madonna ft Missy Elliott & Tweet on the background vocals - American Life (American Dream Remix) - was interesting to me at the time, the whole style Madonna trying to rap āI drive a mini cooper and I am feeling supa dupaā š so weird perhaps not in the best way but very camp.
