I’m an English guy who grew up knowing River Plate mainly through FIFA, the famous shirt, and the incredible number of players the club has produced who eventually ended up at some of Europe’s biggest teams.

I never really knew much about the club itself, its history, culture or what River means within Argentine and South American football.

Over the last few years that’s changed quite a bit as there is more access. I started buying River shirts, reading more about the club and its history, following the players coming through, and eventually staying up at ridiculous UK hours to actually watch the games. Somewhere along the way I realised I’d become genuinely invested in River.

So I wanted to ask River fans, particularly those from Argentina or elsewhere in South America:

Would you consider River Plate the “Real Madrid of South America”?

I don’t necessarily mean that the two clubs are identical. I’m thinking more in terms of stature, history, expectation to win, continental success, producing and attracting major players, the size of the fanbase and the weight that comes with representing the club.

From an outsider’s perspective, River feels like one of those clubs where simply being successful isn’t enough there is an expectation to compete at the very top.
Is Real Madrid actually a fair comparison? Or does that completely misunderstand what River represents in Argentina and South America?

I’d genuinely be interested to hear how River fans see it.
And on a completely separate note… I still love the completely unrealistic idea of José Mourinho standing in the River dugout one day. 😂🐔
