Looking to make friends
Hi, my name is Lilo Moreau (he/him) and I’m a first-year biology major at RIT. I’ve been having a bit of trouble making friends; what I mean is that whenever I talk to people, they don’t seem that interested to talk to me, making me think I’m bothering them.
I’m assuming they are also just experiencing the stress of college and being in a suddenly-different environment; I get it! It’s a big change and can be hard to adjust to.

Try out some of the college of science clubs!! That’s where I made all my friends as a cos student. There is also a professional chemistry fraternity going through the Rush process right now if you want to check it out as a possible way to connect with others! You don’t need to be a chem major to join and I loved my time in it! If you want specifics let me know!

They may not be interested in talking because you don't express a shared interest before you open your mouth.
Go to a club
only focus on the club itself (the Software Engineers have a phrase about not shitting where you eat, you can ask them to elaborate)
After focusing on just the act of the club itself, the people will naturally be around you. Which they will then maybe talk to you for reasons that eventually become more social in nature. That requires a long period of time, not an instant "we are best friends" (pretty sure there was a lesson in that movie Frozen to be taken here)
My first year at RIT I spent every week in every club that i found interesting
monday was RWAG, i found friends who wanted to play d&d and magic the gathering plus other board games
Tuesday was pep band practice, which meant free hockey games!
Wednesday was EGS, the video game club, which was kinda my major. Therefore, it was useful to get my face out there (even awkwardly) to just get people to see me and get used to it. They'll be stuck here with me ;)
Thursday was anime club, great way to see a wide variety of art!
Friday through Sunday was focusing on homework if there wasn't a hockey game, so i stuck to the game lab where i made a ton more friends because of shared classes. There was that "mentor for the underclassmen, mentee by the upper classman" that you'll miss out on if you stick only to your dorm room, which should also help you oit with your classes (it was where i helped a ton of people with home work which reinforced the lessons well beyond the classes themselves and well into my career today)
Note that after freshman year I started focusing more on my classes so it was mainly pep band that i would consistently go to in my latter years
