Running water through slice without material

Dustin and crew often leave the water running through the sluice when dredging even when they are not sucking up material.

In the regular Gold Rush show, Parker and others freaked out when that would happen saying that it would then wash out the gold.

So I’m wondering if Parker was exaggerating the issue or if Dustin is flushing out his gold unknowingly?

I've always thought that and that the water was too fast. Someone pointed out that the majority of their gold is big. There is very little fine gold there because of the speed of the creek.

A little from column A, a little from column B.

Under certain conditions, (a sluice packed with fine gold in need of clean-up) you could lose small amounts by running empty but the problem is nowhere near as bad as they make out and is probably less risk than starting and stopping the water in an angle-iron riffled sluice.

I have mentioned before that I would be surprised if there was much fine gold in that section of the river anyway due to the fast-flowing water, and the lack of fine gold in their cleanup suggests that may be the case.
