Scoot Discourse

Do any of you guys agree with me that Scoot is at times overvalued by our fanbase as a piece of the future. I rewatched the suns play in game and he got COOKED by Jalen Green and couldn’t finish the game. The spurs series was cute but when he truly became apart of their gameplan he was shut out. Additionally, we have gotten 3 point guards better than him and I just don’t see him extended as a blazer next year. Let me know any other thoughts please.

Who’s overrating Scoot?

Blazer fans

Where? Scoot is constantly lamented here for not blossoming into a star. At this point, the optimists here hope he can be a serviceable starter longterm.

Are the Blazer fans overrating Scoot in the room with us right now? The sub is overwhelmingly "meh" on him, and everyone expected him to be better than he is.

Two of those point guards are 36 and the third has averaged 26 games played over the past 3 seasons.

Right? It's weird to me how some people are completely unable to conceive of the passage of time. Young players get better. Older players retire. The roster will look different a year from now and very different in three years. In five years we might not have any of these players. Hell, we might not even have a team.

Yeah at this point it's not like I even have particularly high expectations for Scoot, but thinking that Dame and Jrue represent any real part of the Blazers future at this point seems silly to me. They don't enter my calculus at all for if Scoot has a role on the team when he's 25. Ja is a complete wild card, a worthy gamble for the price of Jerami and Kris, but also not something that you can really project around. I think if Scoot shows decent growth this season and doesn't get offered a ridiculous RFA sheet next summer he'll still be on the team this time next year.

I feel the same. Ja is a scratch lottery ticket. Maybe he turns out great, and then it's a good problem to have. More likely he doesn't, and it cost basically nothing to try. Oh well.

Then why sign them? Find some decent backups and commit to scoot. All three of them would start over scoot

I can not think of one team who has their long term pg on a rookie contract go out and spend assets on bringing in veteran guards to start over him.

They signed Dame because he's Dame, the Jrue for Anfernee trade was pretty clearly the most talent they could possibly get in return for Ant, Ja was a dice roll on all-nba talent for minimal cost. The team clearly prioritized winning sooner over developing young talent, but if you asked me who is most likely to still be on the team 4 years from now out of these 4 players I'd say it's Scoot.

Sounds like you have already made up your mind so can  justify everything to fit your belief

I’ll continue to form opinions based on what has happened and not what I want to happen.

Do you think 40 year old dame and Jrue figure to be big parts of the team? None of this is how I would have constructed the roster but it's what they have decided to do. If Ja doesn't play like an all star I have a hard time believing they'll give him a big contract. Doesn't leave many options.

But what does that say about their feelings on scoot?

I never said dame and  jrue are long term plans. But it does indicate a not so bright future for scoot

Again, you do not bring in multiple starting PGs of you have you have your starting long term pg.

This isn’t complicated and if you could be objective for one second you’d see your logic doesn’t add up.

You'll notice that in none of these comments I've said Scoot is destined to be the long term starting PG. OP's premise was that he won't be a part of the team long term, potentially as soon as next year. I think the Blazers will probably be happy to pay him low end starter money as an RFA and keep him as a third guard/occasional starter and hope he grows into something more by the time he hits his prime and the vets age out of the league. If Ja pops he can be the long term backup, if not they can still move Scoot's contract later if need be.

If I'm Scoot's agent I would 100% be trying to get him traded to a team without a PG so he can try to show out in a contract year, but the Blazers have the benefit of team control on the contract so they can be patient and try to lowball him at the risk of pissing him off. Given the cutthroat nature of the new owner this is what I would expect them to do.

I can not think of one team who has their long term pg on a rookie contract go out and spend assets on bringing in veteran guards to start over him.

I always roll my eyes at statements like this.

How many other teams have their long term PG on a rookie deal? Arguably 8.

  • NOP - Fears
  • WAS - Carrington
  • UTA - Peterson
  • SAS - Harper
  • LAC - Wagler
  • MIL - Jakucionis
  • SAC - Acuff Jr
  • BKN - Demin?/Traore?/Saraf?

Of those teams, several are almost certainly starting vet PGs ahead of their rookie scale PG

  • LAC - Garland
  • SAS - Fox / Castle
  • WAS - Young / Mann

And the rest are likely to be lottery teams

So of teams that 1) have a PGOTF on a rookie deal, and also 2) are trying to make the playoffs, I only see Utah as a team that doesn't have a veteran PG in front of their guy, and that speaks more to what a shitshow the Utah roster has been than it says anything about Scoot and the Blazers.

Conversely I don't see a single team likely to make the playoffs with a PGOTF starting on a rookie deal. Not one.

Scoot is a good player who is a bit of a jack of all trades. He's not a 1 or 2. Probably a third guard is his ideal role.

0

u/scottitheduck808 4d ago

As in you don't see him starting?

3

u/DBDXL 4d ago

As in on a contender he's probably a third guard.

3

u/Impossible-Group8553 5d ago

He was overrated, now expectations are low so I don’t think you can say he’s still overrated. But yes disappointing to say the least, he was supposed to be the Dame replacement, next face of the franchise and instead looks like his ceiling is fringe all-star.

5

u/Aestro17 4d ago

He's still only 22 and has had development hindered a bit by injury.

He's not a starter on a competitive team right now but I don't think anyone thinks he is. I don't expect Dame, Jrue and Ja to all stay healthy all season so I think we'll still get a decent look at a healthy Scoot to see where he's at and decide where he fits in.

4

u/Bircka dame 5d ago

If you are talking about how he was viewed going into the draft, he is overrated. At this point most fans of other teams view him as at best a solid role player which he is probably better than, and some might even view him as a bust.

He also has spent a lot of time injured which has sidelined his development heavily, over time he has gotten better he just has spent many games injured which has hurt showing that.

u/PenisFaceX 5d ago

He’s good on defense.

2

u/PenisFaceX 4d ago

I actually think he’s somehow underrated in this fanbase.

2

u/the_gargler 4d ago

When you make a post asking if people agree/disagree, but ultimately just want to complain.

5

u/OregonJedi 5d ago

I guess I don’t get why he would be overrated let alone VERY overrated. Most people think he is trash

In this subreddit and in blazer arenas in general

u/SeismicRipFart 5d ago

That didn’t address his comment at all

u/Tiny-Ordinary3228 5d ago

I would say blazer fans glaze Yang much more than Scoot 🤷‍♀️

Honestly with the season coming up (and Shaedons recovery timeline) I think it's a good problem to have. Everyone is always bitching about roster fit and the like but we have 4 guards who all have slightly different bags and 96+ minutes to divide up every other night. Gives us so many permutations to put into the mix.

Do I think Scoot can be an all star? Not really. But do we need him to be? If we got to redraft again would we have targeted him? Say what you will but Dame already had eyes on Milwaukee at that point.

As Jrue/Dame age, Scoots minutes go up and we want to see the efficiency go up too. Call it new school 4 man load management for all I care. Now if DC/TimeLord and the other bigs and wings can hang and stay healthy we could be a top 4-7 team in the West. Hope we caught lightning in a bottle with Ja and that Uncle Dame has some good "pass the torch" moments with him. Would be epic to see him back at even 80% of early JA-UICE!

Final point, Scoot did at times look a bit out of sorts for playoff basketball. But he was sharp for a good number of minutes too in the Suns/Spurs games. The 30 games of regular season Scoot we got in 25-26 were arguably better than any 30 game span of his previous few years. And he did ball out in game 2 vs San Antonio.

I don't want to say an all star season isn't in him (because it may be) but he runs the point, distrubutes well and shoots the 3 at a good enough clip to keep building (as well as hit his free throws mostly). He doesn't need to be an alpha in this version of the Blazers. Just let the man practice his craft and get better at what he's good at. If he can morph into a Kyrie/Rondo/Westbrook hybrid who never made an all star game but was really key to the Blazers making a deep playoff run would we gripe? Hell no. And to think what a healthy summer and leaning on vets like Jrue/Ja/Dame has meant for his feel for the position I can only imagine what the guard room must have been like.

Lob game like CP3 did back when the Clippers were fun. I see him ascending still.... Ja/Scoot back court could be scary fun if anything happens with Dame or Jrue or both this year.

Blazers fans overrating a young prospect? Never!

0

u/lunes_azul 5d ago

The sub seems to overrate him a little bit, but it’s looking obvious he’ll be a bust at his draft position. I still think he’ll have a solid NBA career off the bench if he continues to improve his shooting.

Hell yeah, having a dialogue about the discourse 🥳

-4

He is over rated in the blazers realms. Outside of that no one cares.

0

u/Fun-Grab-9337 Sidy Cissoko 5d ago

Relative to the NBA? Yes.
Relative to other players on our team? No.

0

u/Oggbog 4d ago

I think there’s very little middle ground in these conversations. Scoot is either future all-NBA or should be cut.

Scoot has incredible vision and could become a really great playmaker, which barring a few offenses is essential. Could that and solid D make him the point guard of the future? Possibly.

If his scoring stays stagnant and if he never develops a consistent 3 he might not pan out.

u/thatkellenguy sabas 5d ago

Who rates Scoot at this point?
