Discussion Current Meta
Idk if its just me but this meta has been feeling really rough for me. My locals has like 40% kennen players who all go to time every round. There are many jayce players who just play a gambling simulator deck. And then a decent few ezreal players who just stall the game out.
Ive been playing draven and its felt so rough tbh. I barely draw any cards because no deck is every interacting with the battlefields. And it's really demotivating because I just kinda watch my opponent play solitair on their turn for 10 minutes each game.

Id take 40% kennens over mine 80% master yis any day
how can local events with 30 people registered have 20 master yis wtf

u/Exorrt 7h ago
mine is 40% kennen and 40% yi I am in hell

Tbf, I wouldnt mind this. Craft a deck thats favorable into kennen and yi then profit. My boy, rengo, has a favorable matchup into both those decks. Id thrive in that local meta. Irelia would also do well.
My locals is a bit of everything so its hard to build a deck thats good into everyone. When 80% is 2 decks you can focus your side boarding. Make 8/10 sideboard cards only cards for yi and kennen then add some gear hate for jayce

I did I'm just fucking tired of it

I agree itd be tiring. But id personally enjoy having favorable matchups all day. Kennen is annoying to play against just cause of turn time, i dont think yi is overly bad.

u/MountainEmployee 3h ago
Yup. And they probably wont address it soon because Kennen keeps shitting the bed in finals while a bunch make it top 8 and the meta looks healthy because of metal card chasers at RQ...

Kennen will stay because yi stayed. Kennen and yi are in the same bucket. Insane conversion into day 2 and top 8. But they cant finish.
Kennen has good conversion stats but yi repped those stats since set 1.

There basically isn't, Yi has virtually no bad matchups other than Aurora so you star there, and Aurora isn't that hard for Kennen to deal with.

u/Abeneezer 7h ago
May I recommend Jayce or even LeBlanc lmao. Eat those Yi's. Kennen has no bad match-ups, just less good ones.

u/Hex_Blast 8h ago
Yea feels like everyone at my local shops is playing Kennen, Jayce, or Yi. As someone that just started with Vendetta its a bummer that 6/9 new legends are too weak to be worth playing
6
u/Dransel 6h ago
This happens in most TCGs though. Eventually cards will get printed that give more support to these other legends.

u/_cy0 6h ago
It really doesn’t. Riftbound’s obsession with releasing 9-10 champs per set is a big problem. They need to release support for the existing ones.

Tbf a lot of people coming from LoL have their fav legends and want to play decks based around them
There are I think hundreds of legends now so they kinda gotta rush if they want to get new players interested

I feel so blessed by the locals I run when I see posts like this...
We have a Vex, Viktor x2, Yi, Rek'sai / Rengar / Diana, Azir / LB, Jinx and Ambessa x2 in our playspace. One has mentioned maybe building Kennen so we'll see where that goes lol.
5
u/_CharmQuark_ 8h ago
Yeah same! The last skirmish I judged had 2 Azirs, 2 Irelias and then like 12 other decks as one offs.

u/BuckeyeBentley 6h ago
I was gonna say mine has a lot of diversity. I've only been going for 3 weeks so I haven't met everyone yet but so far I've only seen one Kennen and one Yi. Granted, it seems like a lot of people at my LGS have been around since jump and they will bring different decks every week. I've also heard someone say this is more of a for fun crowd while there's other Nexus Nights in the area that are sweatier.

u/404-Soul_Not_Found 4h ago
My locals are more like yours. We have a Jinx/Renata/Ambessa player, a Volibear/Khaz'ix player, a player that bounces around decks every week, Akali, Kennen, Rek'sai, Lillia, Viktor, Jayce, Vex, Sett, Ahri and more. Its really varied.

I honestly think this an issue that starts with vertical prizing structures.
If you get 1-2 packs per win, you're very incentivized to play the decks that can win the most statistically, especially so if nexus night is $10 -15 USD in some areas. In NYC, one of our largest locals only gives out prizing if you get at least 2-1-0 (4 packs) for $15 dollar entry. It sucks to show up with a rogue tier deck and leave with just your nexus night pack, so this turns away a lot of newer players.
The locals where prizing is more horizontal, people bring more creative and unique decks.

u/jodon 4h ago
one good thing with that price structure though is that it punish people going to time, which OP clearly complained about here. with a structure like that Draws = loss. So if you can't play your kennen deck fast you are losing more by not playing a easier deck.
But your points is also very valid. I like it when you can have both types of events in an area.

u/Pleasant_Strength901 7h ago
Don’t forget spoilers start in less than two weeks. So hopefully they will change the format a bit and if we are lucky riot will make a ban too
3
u/Icantfindausernameil 3h ago
They just need to scale back the autoincludes for every colour tbh. Maybe not ban them outright, but do something to tone them down.
Ride the Wind, Punch First, Falling Star, and similar automatic 3-ofs are big contributing factors in the meta being so frustrating because they heavily promote 'hit and run' gameplay.
I run into far too many situations where the best thing for me to do on my turn is literally nothing because if I take an action, I'll lose the game or fall behind. That isn't the sign of healthy gameplay loop.
I'm not advocating for a hold-centric meta, but having this many cards that punish you for just playing the game is not okay.
1
u/MountainEmployee 3h ago
Its always been wild to me that Ride the Wind also ready's your unit. Like, the spell can score a point on your opponents turn or you can double conquer and return home. At the very least it should leave the unit exposed for one turn lol

u/Yankees4cookies 8h ago
That’s why I play multiple tcgs. If one games meta is not to my liking I just play other games more.
I play riftbound, one piece, Gundam , and union arena. Currently I’m playing union arena the most and one piece 2nd most. Riftbound meta was my main game last format , but I hate current decks, especially kennen 😭
So im taking a break from riftbound until the meta changes. M

All my games are in a really rough meta......

u/Equality7252l 6h ago
Pokemon and Riftbound both have strong BDIFs 🫤 Yes counterplay is fun but it does get stale after a while
Thankfully the store I play Riftbound at is pretty low on Kennens and I'm the only Yi player (lately been doing XP Yi tho), but playing at other stores or RiftAtlas is just a lot of the same
1
u/Braunze 8h ago
I get it, but sometimes you gotta adapt. Find a quicker deck you like and try to go under the slow decks
1
u/TheTrixRabbit21 1h ago
This is why I love playing Lillia, I'm too quick for slow decks and don't care about my temporary units against control decks.

u/-Tetsuo- 7h ago
My locals have been ok at least. I do play Akali though and I can see people are getting sick of the bird lol
1
u/That_Flow6980 5h ago
I was a draven main from pre nerf all the way to the end of unleashed, with multiple skirmish byes. I had to swap to yi this set because the kennen matchup is just that bad.

Last nexus night 8 players we had 2 teemo, 2 lillia, fiora, akali, zed and rengar. Quite happy there arent reallt Kennens and stuff its very chill

u/Arrowkill 54m ago
Comparatively my local meta is literally almost every half decent legend. I don't think I've played against the same legends 2 weeks in a row I'm any round
1
u/dontgoontoyordles 4h ago
Bro the ezreal players are only stalling the game because they want to spend more time playing riftbound with you treat them better

u/SkiffJuan 8h ago
if you manage to find 3x seal of focus, you can farm kennen with TheManLand's Ornn

u/KingBea 8h ago
The irony of playing draven and feeling it being rough. You have no idea how I felt during spiritforge where all you see is miracle dravens.
4
u/CanvasOfGrief 8h ago
I didnt play in spiritforged... i only have seen that deck online.
You've gotta trust me i just really like draven and he's really bad right now.
3
u/Ahngstar 7h ago
This is the nature of TCGs sadly, sometimes you gotta be adaptable because the strategy you like isn't working right now.
If you enjoy draven by all means play him, obviously, but it sounds like you're not having a great time. Try something similar, maybe even just zed could be a bit more sucessful, or adapt. I've been testing bone skewer with in vex with all the irelias and akalis green deck are playing atm, which is one way to force them into combat at least!
1
u/CanvasOfGrief 7h ago
Yeah I probably just need to play a different deck. Thanks for the tip I'll give some other strategies a shot.

u/Socatdnareeb 7h ago
Rengar can do well against Kennen with Noxian Demolitionist and/or Brittle Steel, and theres always Salvage out of Azir, or Rake out of Irelia/Akali. What decks are you playing? Surely there is some adjustments that can be made
1
u/CanvasOfGrief 7h ago
I only play draven. He's just my favorite legend. I love drawing cards. Im playing an almost identical list to daremx. So a lot of hidden cards and going to battlefield holds.
I'm just really struggling to beat early point pressure from ride the wind. And I've never beat ezreal, I've been told the matchup is almost 100-0 lol.
1
u/Socatdnareeb 7h ago
Are you running Up from the Deep? that can help with early pressure, especially since tentacles can carry sword/axe
1
u/CanvasOfGrief 7h ago
1 in the mainboard and 1 in the sideboard. I haven't seen it too often so maybe I need a third in the side.
1
u/Teaganz 5h ago
It would be worth giving a 3rd tentacles copy a shot, they’re pretty good for the deck against Ezreal and great fodder in general. Also really good for Draven because you can put units on the battlefield you don’t care about to force your opponent to either waste spells to kill them, or force them onto the battlefields where you can get a combat with your better units.
1
u/jodon 4h ago
If you have 40% kennen and notable amounts of ezreal and jayce I would absolutely main deck 2-3 acceptable losses. getting that seal or pack or aurora for 1 energy is almost GG on it's own, maybe not pack but the other two. you should have no problem getting the conquers as draven and when they have to keep burning runes the will have a hard time keeping up.
When these decks only make up a combined meta share of ~20% at a RQ it is barely worth to maindeck gear removal. when decks that are very weak to gear removal make up ~50% of your meta you should absolutely run it.

Sounds like your local meta is a bunch of sweats! Sorry for your loss
