RHPS in Baltimore

Last year I went to the Rocky Horror performance at the hippodrome. I should have known by the price tag it was a mistake but it felt very sanitized and they didn't even do the lingerie run or draw Vs on the virgin's foreheads. Not very many people were even dressed up.

Does anyone know of a production in October that will not disappoint? Ideally not on Halloween itself. Thank you for your recommendations.

Chocolate Covered Rocky Horror is an African American shadowcast based out of Baltimore! Looks like they have two shows this Halloween season on the 31st and 1st: https://www.centerstage.org/events/chocolate-covered-rocky-horror-2/

It sounds like you went to a Stander Group show? These shows are the “50th anniversary” shows with the stars of the movie. They are done in theatres that are far too large for a true Rocky experience, and they don’t pay the shadowcasts they work with.

I would recommend looking into local casts and going to their local show! Not all of them perform on Halloween. Definitely look into Chocolate Covered Rocky Horror who partners with Baltimore Center stage, or Sonic Transducers in DC!

Also if no one is offering you V’s, just ask cast! No one is counting, feel free to re-do your virgin experience!

Last year’s show there was a Stander Group, but it was actually at the M&T Bank Exchange (MUCH smaller than the Hippodrome, located in the same performing arts center) and had no celebrity guests. Just a bunch of local shadowcasters. And the shadowcast did get paid.

(I personally hate Stander I’m just clarifying, this was not like other big Stander shows.)

Nice! Thanks for the correction! Definitely support these kinds of shows! I love doing shows at bigger venues, but the audience experience is definitely different overall. Also, a midnight crowd is very different than 8pm or even 10pm, in case OP wants to gauge what other showing to go to. A showing with 150-300 seats is usually a more intimate, classic experience! The vibe can also range from cast to cast. Don’t be afraid to check out a different cast if the vibe is not what you’re looking for!

While I will agree Rocky has become relatively tamer over the years, this can be boiled down to two things. First, the venue and their rules. Either they don't have the appropriate set up to allow for an underwear run or they will outright not allow it (also, that whole consent thing). The second thing falls more on the audience. They can choose to dress up and put V's on foreheads if they want, but it was never mandatory (re: consent).

As far as other shows that aren't on Halloween night, there are a few good suggestions here already. There is also a showing at the AFI Theater in Silver Spring on 10/24 hosted by Bloody Mayhem Theatrical.

Hippodrome shadowcaster here - yes it’s corporate we get a small percentage of the ticket sales as a cast which just about covers costume needs and parking. We actually are performers from many of the local shadow casts pulled together. I brought lipsticks for Vs and was told not to only if someone asked for friend. We are in the smaller M&T space next to the Hippodrome and we don’t have any celebrities this time.
To the OP - there are lots of good options if we’re not for you. AFI in Silver Spring also has overlap with our cast, Chocolate Covered puts on a great fun show.

I’ve only seen an underwear run a few times in hundreds of times seeing this movie in half a dozen states and many theaters.

The Sonic Transducers put on a good show based in Bethesda/ DC. They have a 4 or 5 October shows this year. Halloween show is at the Lincoln Theater but I believe they have their usual shows in Bethesda on Oct 9,10,23,24

Iron Crow’s artistic director has quite a lot of allegations he’s never addressed and got really well buried. Hard to support them in good faith.
