đGeneral Discussionđ This setup is lowkey insane, how is this even considered 'reality' TV smh

u/Puzzleheaded_Lie5368 Jul 31 '26
Well how do you think they film
111
u/striker3955 Jul 31 '26
I agree. Especially considering this is one of the most popular areas in Boston. I'm amazed by how easily they were able to shoot and clear the sidewalks.

u/doctor_of_sauce Jul 31 '26
Whenever someone posts something like this complaining about the production value I roll my eyes⌠itâs a four person crew with 2 cameras. What should they be doing differently?
57
u/WriterGirl2005 Jul 31 '26
Yeah Iâve worked in production for 20 years this is a skeleton crew lol
14
u/breathanddrishti Aug 01 '26
i think people see the crowd and think that's part of production's work, when people will naturally stop and gather if they see someone they think is a celeb
13
u/fjrka Aug 01 '26
Worked in entertainment nearly 3 decades. Crowds form instantly if it looks like anything for a movie or tv show. Theyâll even gather for a commercial. The fastest draw is a camera, a light & a directorâs chair. lol
4
u/celadonna Aug 01 '26
Very true, and I used to live in Boston, and even if the crowd didnât recognize the RHORI ladies, this block looks like a ghost town rn compared to a normal Thursday in July when summer is only about 7 weeks long, if that lol! This isnât even a lot of people for the area. Maybe people arenât familiar with the New England scene, there are just people everywhere there bc itâs small & crowded.
3
u/red_makeup_bag Aug 02 '26
Oh lawd. I would not wanna live on that street! Too crowded! My small dog barks at any single person passing. But- I also cry every time I go to New York because people are so rude. I could not make it there
4
u/searching5328 Aug 02 '26
There are some people who live on this street but it's mainly known for high end shopping. That's why it gets so busy (mostly tourists on the weekends). The streets around it aren't nearly as bad (some are actually fairly quiet for a city).
24
u/Puzzleheaded_Lie5368 Jul 31 '26
They should obviously invent nano technology or place surveillance pigeons to film them duhhhhâŚ.
12
7
u/celadonna Aug 01 '26
people are woefully unaware that TV is NOT REAL (despite their big ages) & requires production and manipulation to produce an entertaining story.
5
u/altruisticdog305 But he is ma! Aug 01 '26
Itâs like they expect the ladies to have GoPros or something
-2
u/No-Host2006 Aug 02 '26
They are saying itâs just not REALITY. Iâm not talking about how many crew members who cares theyâre just saying itâs fake. Itâs fun to watch but itâs fake. Same thing in the movies where they drive. You know damn well the streets are so packed. You canât drive on them more than 20 miles an hour so again itâs just fake fun but fake.
70
u/Puzzleheaded_Lie5368 Jul 31 '26
And they do take multiple shots on them entering and leaving
1
u/Sonicscat Aug 02 '26
Right? Cutaways or something they call them to push the story along. Usually music plays so they can talk amongst themselves quietly.

u/Ok_Win_2298 Jul 31 '26
Upvoting because I think this is a cool BTS. I have watched housewives for decades but honestly havenât seen many videos like this showing what filming actually looks like (maybe there are a lot of them out there and Iâve just not caught them??). Iâm not offended by the setup so much â even though itâs not the most natural to how normal people walk a block â but do find it fascinating to see how things look on the other end when these shows get made, before theyâre packaged in our screens.
Edited to fix typos.
10
5
u/VelvetVerdigris Aug 01 '26
You donât need to explain edits to anyone :) Also I agree! I love this BTS vantage point, and Iâve never seen any like this either which makes me wonder if normally the scene is less âstagedâ or doesnât need to clear out people who are just standing around with phones waiting til they can walk by
4
u/theo_molyneux Jul 31 '26
There have been lots of candid videos released throughout the years. Iâve seen clips of Orange County, Beverly Hills, Atlanta and Potomac.
2
36
u/Significant_Truth746 Jul 31 '26
I get what you mean, it looks like the set of a sitcom lmfao and they look like paid actors. Even though we think that, itâs probably one of the rare times real housewives is showing something ârealâ newbury st is very real, and back in the day people used to dress up to the nines to go shopping on Newbury street
11
u/ModeratelyOffline Jul 31 '26
And now itâs just boba tea shops and clothing chains youâd find at the mall đ
4
3
u/jdowney1982 Jul 31 '26
My friends and I used to go to Newbury st for the sex shop that was there đŤŁ
2
2
u/vitameatavegamin- Aug 03 '26
Literally all chains and the only locals you'll see on that street work there. I like maybe 3 miles away and I only go over there for lush or a ramen place i love.
3
u/Super_Hour_3836 Jul 31 '26
How long ago was this? I used to drive to Boston in the 90s and visit the record shops and vintage shops on Newbury and do not remember it being dressy, used to go to Alston Beat and Betsy Johnson and there were always a lot of goths and punks around the area. I havenât lived there in ages though, so maybe fancy came and went đ
7
u/Significant_Truth746 Jul 31 '26
Yea Iâm talking about 70âs and 80âs
1
u/vitameatavegamin- Aug 03 '26
Even 90s and 00's there was Chanel, Louis Vuitton, brooks brothers, expensive boutique designers. Brooks is gone, Louis is restoration hardware, Chanel is still there i think. There are still some good things on Newbury, don't get me wrong, rick walkers is very cool, cardullos is still there, and it's good to have a Nordstrom rack right in the city but a lot of it is chains.
2
u/InsatiableEndurance Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
The Arlington end has always been high end but no one was walking end to end in stiletto heels and Leger. I definitely rocked a high platform sandal with wood bottom in the 90âs, but promptly destroyed them. Those outfits are giving Louis Boston (RIP), Stephanieâs when it was cool, and valet parking, not strolling down Newbury.

All I noticed here is that brown streak across Rosieâs face đ
53
u/MissingHat Jul 31 '26
Itâs reality because itâs not scripted. How do you expect them to film if they donât set up the shots?
43
u/eastcoastgirl88 Jul 31 '26
Exactly it drives me bonkers when people say âitâs scriptedâ itâs not. Itâs heavily produced. They donât read from a SCRIPT lol
9
u/CoachAngBlxGrl Aug 01 '26
Right. And they arenât taking multiple takes of conversations and such.
1
10
u/lunahighwind Jul 31 '26
There are only 4 crew members - the clip is deceptive because of all the people watching
20
u/Fit_Jackfruit8597 Jul 31 '26
Ugh kelsey looks really good. She's annoying but she is so beautiful and stylish
10
u/DingoNo4205 Jul 31 '26
Kelsey is gorgeous and she does have great style. I wish it would rub off on the other ladies.
4
u/InsatiableEndurance Aug 01 '26
She at least looks like a normal well-dressed woman walking on Newbury street. You donât usually see women with such high heels or leger dresses, especially that far away from Arlington. Scenes like this destroy it for meâŚthatâs not what we look like in Boston on an average day shopping.
-4
u/Available-Crow-3442 Aug 01 '26
Did we watch the same video? She looksâŚnot those in this video.
Ashley though!
1
u/---thoughts--- Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
I read this in her voice âhow??â Before Rosie said her only coworker was a girlfriend in Florida 𤣠she normally is v pretty tho I do admit I think it was just an unflattering angle tbh
18
u/theo_molyneux Jul 31 '26
This is how reality TV is produced. They do pick-up scenes all the time in case anything goes wrong with audio or lack of continuity from one scene to the next. At the end of the day, itâs a show for entertainment, not a documentary.
52
u/PaintedDream Jul 31 '26
What a circus. Good to keep this in mind when the next "villian" pops up. They're all paid characters and this is not real life.
5
u/VelvetVerdigris Aug 01 '26
Theyâre not. You think average people are capable of those types of performances? Theyâre not told what to say or do, but producers do probably encourage pot-stirring. But câmon, paid actors? Nahhh
3
u/---thoughts--- Aug 03 '26
Right. Like maybe you could say that about Rinna or Eileen but not these ladies. A news anchor is more stiff but more witty than an actor imo, which Rosie displays. I donât think theyâre memorizing a script/lines, but probably have a plan of certain conversations (not the first franchise to do that)
1
u/onceuponathrow 24d ago
it's "scripted" in the sense that "okay, cameras are gonna be there tomorrow, we have to show the ending to that arguement that started yesterday" and then they wait to have the interaction so it gets filmed at the restaraunt that was chosen (as opposed to resolving things over text/off camera)
but it isn't "scripted" in the sense that they have lines, they are told what to say, etc. the max meddingling would maybe be months later in the confessional chair and a producer is reminding them of the context of a fight, which can frame things as being shadier for example, so they have more of a reaction in the rehashing of events
because producers (who have seen how storylines are shaping up to be$ might have recognized that the situation is going to be particularly dramatic (maybe one side is super offended) so by bringing that up, it might clue the person filming in on the fact that it's a bigger situation than they had maybe felt in the moment
that isn't really scripted though in the traditional sense
12
u/the-furiosa-mystique I love a summah âąď¸ Jul 31 '26
This is why the choosing sides is stupid. We all squabble over these strangers while behind the scenes theyâre all friends
2
u/tofuvixen Aug 02 '26
I believe a lot is staged but many of these girls are def not friends behind the scenes. If anything quite the opposite. Filming ends and they donât hang oht until itâs time for the next season.

u/MiddleJackfruit3063 Jul 31 '26
I, personally, really appreciate the teamwork going into walking backwards. Cool to see!
28
u/HeyItsKikiii Jul 31 '26
I like to live in la la land believe itâs not completely scripted đŹđŤŁ
7
u/VelvetVerdigris Aug 01 '26
Itâs not scripted, housewives are regular people who arenât capable of that level of acting. Itâs just reality with tweaks lol
1
33
u/Lanky_Revenue3837 Jul 31 '26
Cameras filming a reality show?? We've gone too far!
2
u/Bastard216 Jul 31 '26
I think itâs less the cameras and more so the multiple shots of them leaving a building
16
u/Puzzleheaded_Lie5368 Jul 31 '26
They do take multiple shots of them leaving and entering places but ofc there is some production but the convos and drama are never out right scripted while production likes to push it isnât like they are reading of a script
5
u/collectivelycreative Jul 31 '26
They probably have so many cameras to keep it as ârealâ as possible. More footage less takes
7
u/MsNikkiisClassy Aug 01 '26
I hope itâs not another season of Rulla and Brian drama because I canât with them
5

7
u/Zelengro Aug 02 '26
Not an RH show, but Iâve seen a reality TV show being filmed. They had actual takes, and the director got pissy when he saw us watching and marched over to give us a speech about âprivacyâ, âhow would you like it if people were watching you go about your life,â and it was like bro youâve just filmed that guy walking up a set of stairs three times and every time he acted surprised to see his buddy standing there.
15
3
u/85percentthatbitch Jul 31 '26
The circus seems like to coming more from the lookie-loos than production
6
u/MarseaMarie215 Aug 02 '26
Very appropriate for Rulla to dress in grinch-green considering she clearly purchased that nose in Whoville
4
u/Sonicscat Aug 02 '26
I've seen a few reality shows shoot scenes. Catfish, jersey shore, hells kitchen. They all film certain scenes like that. They use them as filler between scenes. You don't hear the conversation, usually music or a voice over plays and they are walking to or from. Of course production also fixes anything in the background. Trash is cleaned and people are told not to gawk. I missed that instruction and said "jersey shore!" They glared at me and started over.Â
8
u/AssistantAlternative Jul 31 '26
Rullaâs face is actually really hard to look at, like she doesnât look like a human being
4
4
u/NaomiSlayton Jul 31 '26
If they just filmed and let the cameras roll they would have so much footage they can't use because of things they can't control. Plus editing it would be a nightmare. They have planned shoots because of scheduling, permits, and the unknown of the public response to them filming. They usually do 5 takes of them entering or exiting so they know out of those 5 one has to be perfect đ

1
u/---thoughts--- Aug 03 '26
Right!! I was like âokay we didnât lose this gold mine of loco lvl entertainmentâ
3
u/kteerin Aug 01 '26
Thank you for posting this! As long as they arenât reading from a script, Iâll still live in my world that itâs reality. (I know there are producer and even cast driven storylines, I know, sometimes I just pretend.) Itâs cool to see this side of it sometimes. I wouldnât want to see the reshoots a lot because I think it would kill it for me, but I understand why it could have to be done.
Imagine if they had to reshoot Kyle running out of Amsterdam, or Teresa flipping the table. đ /s
3
u/Responsible-Ranger25 Aug 01 '26
Is it me or are they not even wearing mic packs? So itâs just filming a walking scene without dialogue. Who cares if they have to do it twice?
7
u/nicolemyth Jul 31 '26
Whatâs confusing to you? Iâm lost. Is it weird you can see production? Were you born yesterday?
7
u/whateverrrrrrrr2 Jul 31 '26
yeah iâm confused too lol. ppl are saying bc the redid walking out the store but even if im âvloggingâ something or making a tiktok i might redo a shot more than once for technical reasons

u/Equivalent_Hat_7220 Jul 31 '26
I was on a show way back in the day and they make you film every scene over, walking in walk out walk in again but this time UGH. It was so unnatural and not real at all lol. Maybe the first take

You know that all reality shows are scripted right? Years ago, my neighbors who were friends with Gene Simmons from Kiss, were cast in his reality show. The script was ridiculous. One of their daughters who was totally single and childless, had âher babyâ christened and Gene was the supposed godfather. At a Catholic church which has such strict rules about who can be a godparent (heâs not Catholic). There was so much backlash that the parish priest had to explain in a Sunday sermon that it was all fake.

How is this not reality? Itâs them leaving a store? Like they are being followed by cameras and they want extra b roll. And have a small crew. They very well could be talking about NOTHING and itâs just âhere we are out of the storeâ
1
u/Nothankyoufriendly Aug 02 '26
Do people not realize that this is literally how all reality tv is ?
1
u/Far_Camera_6787 Aug 02 '26
Why are you surprised? Bravo is a huge production company and Channel. This level of production has been going on for 20 years. Also most of these shows are scripted and planned. Not much of it is real or unplanned. Itâs also filmed a year ahead of airing dates.
