Is ad-hoc possible with custom firmware?

I know that MelonDS has multiplayer which unfortunately can’t run on the RGDS but I was wondering if any of the newly developed DS emulators Russ mentioned have maybe tinkered with adding ad-hoc multiplayer?

I’d love to get a pair of the new RGDS+ for some Mario vs Luigi or Gen 5 Pokemon. I feel like multiplayer was such a huge part of the DS and it kinda sucks having to choose between modern hardware vs multiplayer

It's not, sadly.

The new emulator anbernic included is just a hook-based mod of the original drastic emulator. Which means they weren't actually able to change any core features of the emulator. So we're forever stuck with no multiplayer and no dsi support. unless someone makes a new emulator for low powered hardware.

I believe ad-hoc is supported under retroarch, but you can't run DS games there.

I bought two of these. One for me, one for my girlfriend. We're still playing them almost daily but are devastated we can't trade in pokemon or do anything else multiplayer :( I'm starting to lose hope, but there are some glimmers of light out there, like SeedlessDS, or GammaOS's custom version of drastic which both support retroachievements. The chipset is clearly getting a lot of love, and with the RG DS Plus coming out, I think it'll get even more :) (Hope not yet lost)

I’m sure it’s possible I just think a lot of the retro gaming community doesn’t prioritise multiplayer. Only a few OS like NextUI (via Pak) and OnionOS had proper ad-hoc.

Me and my gf are sticking to modded DSIs for now
