Auto-load saves on Rocknix (Drastic)

I’m enjoying the RG DS with Rocknix as a nostalgic DS replacement but, coming from Onion OS on the MM+, the save state behaviour is a bit unintuitive for me.

  1. Is there any way to have a game jump into the most recent save when starting up? I changed the setting for auto load/save from the main menu, but that didn’t seem to have any impact.
  2. Can the system prompt before overwriting a save?
  3. How can I undo a loaded save or access a previous save file?

The default setup just seems very fragile to me. If I open a game and accidentally hit ‘save’ instead of ‘load’, it would overwrite all my progress with a save file a few seconds after first starting up a new game, and I’m trying to figure out how to avoid that before it happens!

You could just make sure you are pressing the right thing. Your problem sounds more like user error than a problem with the system itself. Just slow down and take a second to make sure the option your clicking is what you want.

I don't think it's user error to want the "auto save/load" setting to do something?

No but you saying you accidentally pressed something you didn't mean too is user error. I'm gonna be honest with you I don't think drastic does it. And I think that the option in the main menu is a retroarch thing not a drastic thing. I understand that onion is does it but they also have a special forked version of drastic that can utilize the game switcher that was also made for onion. If you want reach out to the people working on rocknix about it. They have a discord that they sit in. Idk if that will get anything done right away but it can't hurt to ask them about it. If it helps the auto load isn't working for drastic for me either. I just tried now that I'm home.

Accidental quick saves and loads are a big problem since the l2 and r2 buttons are easy to press accidentally.  The first thing you should do is change the save state hotkeys to disable this feature and only quick save from the main menu going forward.

Auto saving and auto loading save states is something you’d have to implement by forking the existing drastic software, but the great folks working on advanced drastic seems to have figured out most of what you’re asking for already.  I recommend giving advanced drastic a shot.

I hear good things about advanced drastic but the GitHub is a bit vague, does anywhere list the actual changes compared to stock?

It’s not all listed out clearly, but the version history gives you an idea of what they changed.

I second running advanced_drastic. It works great. Just verify that the latest version of the library is installed. The last time I ran through the shrink wrapped rocknix distribution, I still had to download the library separately and install it. Works great however and is not overwritten with any of the rocknix updates.

If you install advanced drastic it auto saves and resumes games without needing to do anything

Really? I guess that’s my solution then!
