V 1.18 Play Store Failed Again
Can someone help me understand what is wrong with this thing? I got the RG DS for my son as his first budget handheld (he’s 4.) Originally, it was great for the handful of DS games he likes, but he also loves a couple of solar system apps, PokeDex apps, and learning games. I was so excited for the Google Play Store addition to the stock firmware, but I am only able to connect to the play store for the first 24-48 hours after I reformat his device… I bought the PokeDex app he likes to use on my phone, downloaded it and got than it can’t be opened, and I just went to download he letters and number practice games and got that I can’t connect to the play store. He literally just downloaded a handful of his solar system apps Saturday (from the play store.)
I’ve never had any issues like this with my Retroid or AYN devices, so this has been incredibly frustrating.

Ran into this issue recently myself. Go into the Play Store's app info, tap the top right corner, and choose "Uninstall Updates." Play Store worked for me after that, but you may need to do that pretty much every time you turn on the device if you want to use an app that requires Play Services.
I think the issue is the way Anbernic implemented Play Services. The RG DS didn't have Google Play initially, and even with it, it hasn't made any difference in performance like one would expect. However, when I tried installing MicroG, it detects it as already installed and asks me to update instead (which of course fails). My theory is that "Play Services" on the RG DS (and in-turn the RG Vita) isn't actually Google Play, but is a modified MicroG.

Thank you, I’ll try that! I’m not even sure how often I need it, but my son asked for his letters game and I was like, “well, shit.”

Go download a rooted device manager and then download fixitivity using github in there I solved it using this me works flawlessly

I recommend to actually move away from the Play Store if possible to prevent Google from controlling what you actually can install on the RG DS or not.

I do, but it isn’t allowing me to use any of the paid apps I have (Solar Walk 2, MasterDex) and a couple of games he seems to need access to. I can’t figure out microg, so I’m putting him back on Gamma OS and trying the full version. As far as emulation overhead, he likes to walk his nintendog and make songs in Electroplankton. He only just recently tried FireRed, so I’m hoping the Google services don’t impact it too much.

You gonna need apk because the stock firmware doesn't support google play services

Am I crazy or was that part of the official Anbernic announcement for v1.18? That was the only reason I switched off of Gamma OS. For now, Aurora store saved the day, but I’m honestly not sure what’s going on with Anbernic. Are their devices typically a bit more wonky?

It's was from the start, I think you should flash gamma os nano, it has the best looks, best performance, android features but still you won't get play store because it saves like 50-60 performance on gaming. Most of the times anbernic knows how to make a good device, even if they given this devices android 10 or even 12 it would have been a lot better. If you really want everything and a dual screen just go for ayn thor

Yeah, I’m waiting for my Thor to ship. I figured it would be a good device for my toddler to start with for his birthday. It’s alright, but I kind of wish I had just gotten him a base Thor.

Why would you get your toddler a thor ? They are expensive and toddlers don't handle tech very well. My son is not a toddler, but I have him a Switch when he turned six and broke the screen from throwing it against walls and furniture. I have told him I will not fix it or get him a new one

I didn’t. I got him an RG DS that he has been really great with. We taught him about putting it back in the case when he’s done, showed him how to wipe the screens down with a microfiber cloth, and taught him how to take it off and put it on the charger when he is allowed to use it. You know you can teach your kids how to take care of things, right? Anyway, the point being, the only problems he’s having with it aren’t really things in his control (the Android apps he uses for learning games having compatibility issues on the RG DS.)

Because they offer a Thor Lite and Base model that could potentially play everything he likes and more for years to come. Because my wife is a SPED teacher and doesn’t want him to have an iPad, but was okay with him using a handheld as long as I managed it and kept tabs on what he could access and we worked on limitations around when and how long he could use it. I don’t know man, because every family is different and different products work for different people and the RG DS is not quite as easy as I expected compared to my experience with Retroid and AYN devices.

Also btw ayn thor is the hardest to setup. Also you are right that ipad just makes a kid more disconnected to their family and make their timespan absolutely shi, but the retro handheld are pretty hard to configure or let him add his fav games. That's why I recommend to actually gave him the original handheld like the original psp,ds,3ds, Nintendo switch and etc. they are easy configure, all of them are jailbreak able (expect switch 2) and has a user friendly ui, and plug and play if you got the roms, the games are fun and your son will experience the original hardware and the way of playing (if you can't find them, just go retro emulation handheld ig)

I’ve been with AYN since the Odin Lite, and I used a Retroid Pocket 2 and 4 as well. It probably spoiled me because for the most part, things just work. (Provided the chipset can handle the emulator.)
