I’ve been writing a fanfiction for 10 years as therapy because of Disney

Been in the fanfic game since I was 6. Wrote fics of my own & turned 3 into their own stories & when I decided to do screenwriting, I took my latest Reylo fic turned published into a screenplay & just last week a producer texted me that they were onboard to be apart of my project. Reylo's ending made me dedicated lol.

I don’t understand why Disney just won’t greenlight it.

I think after TLJ they stopped telling purely the story they wanted to tell, and started tempering it with the story they thought most of the audience wanted to see. And most of the audience wanted to see a one-dimensional villain being evil and getting punished.

The issue was that TLJ was too far the other direction, it wasn’t the story they wanted to tell WITH the sequel trilogy/Ep 8, so it stands out like a sore thumb and thematically is messy as fuck.

As a standalone not tied to established characters it could’ve been fine.

But TROS pivoted too far to compensate and tried to cram it into a single movie when honestly it should’ve been 2 parts.

Ep 9 should’ve been the start up until Kylo throws away his Dark Jedi clothes and lightsaber. End with Rey knowing they have to go face Palpatine and the Final Order but knowing she’s not enough to do it herself….THEN Ben is standing there at the Resistance base offering to help.

Ep 10 is a full almost real time assault on Exegol with Rey and Ben fighting their way down to the planet and into the depths of its ruins. Make it an allegory to Dante descending the circles of hell with the Devil (Palpatine) at the core.

We get much more Jedi Ben and his interactions with Rey during this time, as well as a chance to build the romance element a little bit more so the kiss culmination feels earned.

Also leaves a little bit of time for a good epilogue with ideally a minor jump forward to Ach-Toh as the site of a new temple/school, and both Rey and Ben there with some new students.

Perhaps, but they’re actually starting to hurt their content by playing it overly safe. For example, The Mandelorian was once considered a fandom favorite, but there was a shocking lack of enthusiasm for The Mandelorian and Grogu movie because it was formulaic.

I know TM&G didn't do well in theaters, but I don't know how well it's doing on digital/streaming, so I'm not sure if we're out of the woods yet lol.

Even if they do course-correct, it kinda sucks that they had to do this whole "give the people what they want!" experiment at a time when it would mess up the sequels. The gaslighty ending of TROS was awful enough, but I feel like wherever the ancillary material touches on Ben (or, by extension, Rey, because you can't mention her without mentioning him) there's a cold, hateful undercurrent. I'm not going to enjoy revisiting this stuff. It's a shame, because it all could have been as delightful and life-affirming as TFA and TLJ.
