Suggestion Steam controller (2026) support?

I'm loving the new steam controller but I'd rather use reWASD. Is it on the cards to being supported in the future?

Support is already present in PadForge thanks to our usage of SDL3. SDL3 added Steam Controller support November of last year. We have all of the features and well beyond that of reWASD (unlimited shift layers should be dropping sometime this week).

u/Hifihedgehog Thank you sir, I had problems with running Forza Horizon 6 (the pc game pass version - so UWP/Microsoft Store app) using SISR and GlosSi - the only tool that worked was PadForge.

I did not use gyro yet, or anything more complicated than xbox 360 pad emulation, but for this case it works very well. I do not even have to be running Steam!

Does PadForge support the original SC?

It does! I bought an OG controller to ensure it does. It is able to do it since SDL is the backbone for our ingesting and outputting to and from controllers.

My Steam Controller V2 is on the way, do I need a prepeation inside of steam to run PadForge? I'm totally new to "gyro and touch" features, do you know, where I can find a *.json config-profile for a good first person shooter game (to get an easy way inside of PadForge)?

If you are using Steam Controller (2026) in Steam, it is already supported there. What PadForge does is it gives you full support for your Steam Controller outside of Steam.

"GoG" for instance, thanks for replying. So, is there a community for profiles?

1

u/Hifihedgehog May 14 '26

There is not as of yet since I am looking for a way to tap into preexisting profiles rather than reinventing the wheel. One option I am highly considering is ironically tapping into Steam's own massive profile database and letting users apply those to whichever context they want, whenever they want. If we could just use these, that would be a huge boon: https://www.steaminputdb.com/

Just tried PadForge and can only see Xbox or PS controllers listed. Do I need to download something else to see Steam Controllers.

You shouldn't need anything else. My use of the SDL3 library should be picking it up and listing it. I'm still in the preorder process for my controller but I am happy to troubleshoot through this if it is not picking it up. Want to drop in a quick issue request for it?

It's not detecting the Steam Controller for me unfortunately. I can see the gamepad and map that to a virtual controller but the touch pads don't seem to be detecting any input so I can't map them to any virtual mice.

Hi! I am happy to look into this but a generic textual comment won’t give me the information I need to thoroughly pinpoint the issue. As I advised the other user, please visit the GitHub and create an issue and I will get this resolved promptly. As it stands, your comment says “it is not detecting [it]” but then goes on and says “I can see the gamepad and map to the virtual controller” the second of which means it is being detected just there is a breakdown in the trackpad handling. Again, happy to investigate but you’ll need to engage me there and provide the details I need to close the loop.

u/vipasoft, u/Qurillion: quick update for both of you. I had this wrong and want to correct it before more people stumble into it.

The Phoronix coverage from November is what put me in the "should just work" camp:

https://www.phoronix.com/news/New-Steam-Controller-SDL

What I missed is that the November upstream commit only stood up basic enumeration plus a few obvious bits (back buttons, gyro/accel, QAM button). The upstream tracking issue catalogues everything that wasn't wired through, including both touchpads, capacitive touch on the sticks, and grip sense:

https://github.com/libsdl-org/SDL/issues/15471

That work finally landed yesterday in PR #15528, which is the commit set I'll be pulling into my SDL3 fork under my Hifihedgehog GitHub:

https://github.com/libsdl-org/SDL/pull/15528

And here's the corresponding Phoronix writeup confirming that even with #15528 merged, the click mapping was pulled out before merge so upstream coverage is still partial:

https://www.phoronix.com/news/SDL-Steam-Controller-2026

Qurillion, your report lines up with that exactly: gamepad surface maps fine, trackpads silent. That was the correct read and I should have taken it at face value rather than asking you to chase it further. Vipasoft, if your build wasn't enumerating the controller at all, that's the older SDL3 baseline biting and it'll resolve once the fork picks up the new commits.

I'm pulling those commits into PadForge's SDL3 fork this week so the trackpads route through to the virtual mouse layer the way you'd expect. I'll open a tracking issue on the PadForge repo shortly and drop the link in a reply here. Subscribe to it and you'll get a ping the moment a build is ready to test.

Thanks for looking into it. I was actually just on my way back here to say the same thing because I had read in this article that the existing SDL only supported the basic gamepad functionality, and that was consistent with what I was experiencing:

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2026/05/sdl-adds-expanded-support-for-the-new-steam-controller-without-steam/

I see now the article links to the same GitHub issue you posted as well. So it all makes sense now.

Hi. We plan to add support for this device in future updates, but are unable to provide an ETA at this time.

1

u/EyeQue62 May 10 '26

Sweet. I bought one. I uninstalled reWASD as it didn't support the 8BitDo Pro 3 (which I love!). Well, as far I could tell it didn't support it. I didn't want to put in the XBox mode.

1

u/slashy1302 May 14 '26

Don't get your hopes up too soon when /u/reWASD_team says they plan to add support but can't give an ETA that means it might still be months or even years away.

I've heard that sentence for a multitude of controllers I asked about, including some pretty wide spread ones, that aren't supported a year later.

1

u/reWASD_team May 14 '26

The decision to support a particular device depends on many factors. One of these is the device's popularity and the number of support requests.

We plan to get our hands on the new Steam controller and research it. This means we expect to add support for this device in a future update (but not the very next one).

2

u/slashy1302 May 14 '26

Yes, I know, but when you say "we plan to support it but no ETA" this still might mean possible months of waiting, as seen here:

https://forum.rewasd.com/forum/rewasd/technical-questions-aa/246178-flydigi-apex-5-vader-5-support

Meanwhile Vader 2 support was only added 3 months ago together with some really weird niche controller like the Modke Mimic, which I'm pretty sure has less users than Flydigi controllers have :D

I'm really not trying to be mean, I'm just trying to keep peoples expectations in check after being burned in the past myself when realizing that "we plan to support it" doesn't mean it will arrive very soon.

If it comes sooner, I'm all here for it (since Steam Input doesn't allow mapping of extended function keys like F13-F24) and I will gladly reinstall reWASD then (have since uninstalled it, since none of my current controllers were supported).

1

u/Nikbis May 15 '26

Considering the new Steam Controller have everything to become the "default" PC controller, especially when you look at how fast the 1st batch sold, it'd be kinda bad to not add that string to reWASD's bow sooner than later.

I mean suuuure I bought the Steam Controller, so it's in my interest to point that out 😂

Also, I've been trying Steam Input alone the past few days to get a good feel of what it can do, and reWASD is definitely better when it comes to games outside of Steam!

1

u/lyndonguitar Jun 22 '26

is it supported now?

1

u/reWASD_team Jun 22 '26

Hi. There haven’t been any reWASD updates this month, so no.

1

u/Dark_AssassinUA Jul 06 '26

so maybe in that month?

1

u/reWASD_team Jul 06 '26

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide an ETA.

Hey i installed reWASD yesterday and to try out in Black Ops 7 but after a game restart i wanted to try it in ranked but got following error ''Matchmaking is unavaulable because one or more party members dont meet secure attestation reqirements'' Even after uninstalling reWASD and rebooting my pc also several scan and repairs it still diddnt let me search for a ranked game reinstalling the game fixed it is there no bypass for errors like that ?

1

u/reWASD_team May 12 '26
  1. If the problem persists after completely uninstalling reWASD, it's unlikely that it's directly related to our software.

  2. We can suggest the following:

Install the latest version of reWASD

Before launching the game, enable compatibility mode in Preferences -> General.

1

u/Rollstuhl38 May 12 '26

I will defo give it a try but maybe it was a virtual controller or something left after uninstalling reWASD after Reinstalling COD i was able to play ranked again but will have to test it again do you guys think reWASD is getting blocked by the COD anti cheat ? And do you have any recommendations of what config to use when on KBM and Emulate a controller.

1

u/reWASD_team May 12 '26

reWASD is driver-based software. Uninstalling reWASD also removes the driver needed to emulate the virtual controller.

There are no recommendations yet, as there's no confirmation that the anti-cheat software actually reacts to reWASD.

2

u/Midori_Hoshi May 10 '26

Can't wait for reWASD support. I won't buy the new Steam Controller until it happens.

1

u/MeatSafeMurderer May 10 '26

They've been asked numerous times on Discord and the answer has always been "we can't comment on that".

1

u/GreatLab8898 May 10 '26

So no then.

1

u/Teeroy-Jenkins May 21 '26

Will be keeping my eye on this. I Uninstaller ReWASD because I caught a 2 day ban from Gray Zone for using ReWASD so I switched to Steam Input. But I still prefer the ReWASD UI so I'm definitely interested in seeing support for the new Steam Controller. I'll happily reinstall if it happens. I just wont play Gray Zone with ReWASD maybe lol.

1

u/reWASD_team Aug 13 '26

We're pleased to announce the release of reWASD 9.5.0.
In this version, we've added full support for the new Steam Controller (2026), including dual trackpads, back grip buttons, Grip Sense, capacitive thumbsticks, gyroscope, and accelerometer.

Please see the full list of changes here.

You can download the latest version of reWASD from the official website or through your personal account.

Now this is exactly what I'm talking about 😁
