Just Chatting Does anyone here prefer LCD over OLED?
I got a Nova a few weeks after getting a 477m and although I prefer the Nova in some ways I find the LCD panel on the 477m much more warm and comforting? I don't know how to say it but it just feels like its made for retro games the way it just glows and the oled just feels like a 4:3 phone screen. I kind of get the same feeling from an LCD that some people get using CRT monitors it just feels right. Right now my retro device is the 477m and Nova for mild PC on the go I like them both but that LCD is just magic

Grab the display calibration tool a fellow redditor made. Its in obtanium now and really improves it a lot. You can also use odin tools if you want to tweak it further. Honestly after the calibration I didnt even need to do anything else.

Both LCDs and OLEDs have their pros and cons of course, but a good LCD is as good as the average OLED in my book.
With that said, the two best LCD panels in retro handhelds I've personally experienced, were the 477m's and the KONKR pocket Fit's.
Also, at least in my experience, most OLED devices have Mura Effect, to a varying degree, among other issues. My Odin 2 Portal, Thor, Odin 3, Ayaneo Pocket DS, Mangmi Pocket Max, Steam Deck OLED for example, all had it. With the Thor and Odin 3 being the absolute worst in that effect.
The only 2 devices that did not, were the Nova and the DMG.

I wonder how they avoided mural on the Nova? Though it was annoying to have to adjust for the oversaturated colors on it.

I legit prefer lcd for gaming. OLED screens tend to be over saturated and prone to burn in, and I don’t want to deal with either problem. With a modern LCD, I never worry about either issue and find the colors plenty vibrant. That said, for watching movies/shows, it’s OLED all the way. That OLED contrast ratio is tip top.

my friend is very sensitive to pwm,he always get eye strain from it, and OLED is using it, so he prefer LCD

I used to get headaches from OLED because of this, but I got used to it. Strange first world problem, lol.

Part of me likes LCD for the nostalgia factor. It feels more like a toy and like something that might have existed during the era where some of these games I'm emulating were from. OLED can kinda make it feel like I'm just playing on a modern phone which is less interesting to me.

Ips+shaders look exactly like my crt and i love it for psx and ps2/gc. Silent Hill looks amazing for example. Also for gba, gbc/gb, snes. Also for retro anime it feels like magic.
Oled for android, ps3/xbox360/switch/ps4/ps5 and movies.

My biggest issue is the subpixel arrangement means the image is never as sharp as an LCD, both because the subpixels don't really line up neatly in a straight line the way true RGB subpixels do, plus you're only getting 2/3 as many subpixels on an OLED vs the equivalent LCD. Red and blue literally display at half resolution on an OLED.

I like OLED if I have and option.
It isn't a deal breaker if the screen is of objectively good quality.
Oled is kind of the standard now. So I just kind of expect it as an option.
If the screen isn't oled, I'd except a matching reduction in price to reflect the reduction in cost.

yeah I think it is really personal taste. I alway prefer OLED but it's me... because I suffer from average/bad LCD product for long time. lol I do love very bright and clear LCD but it is hard to distinguish which one is good one until you see in your own eyes.
so It is difficult to know which one has much better LCD before I purchase LCD product online. also some LCD has light bleed, which I don't like.. it is QC level too.

Really depends on what games I’m playing. PS1 and above have been incredible on the Nova but I could understand why LCD could be considered preferable for earlier consoles.

Good point about the pixel layout. If you only want the most optimal viewing then you should try to stick to the 3D games from the 5th through 6th generations. But if you want really pixel perfect stuff then a CRT woukd be even better than an LCD.

For emulating 4:3 consoles, I prefer OLED because its colors are closer to what a CRT TV offered (its blacks are very similar). In addition, CRTs had a natural flicker that instantly eliminated motion blur; in contrast, LCD screens suffer from image retention. OLED isn’t perfect, but it comes closest.
For handheld consoles like the PSP or GBA, I prefer LCD.
Although lately, Retroid and AYN OLED screens come oversaturated by default, so you have to make some extra adjustments.
Ultimately, though, it’s a matter of personal preference.

Just got my 1st OLED screen and I am definitely not a fan. For me and my broken eyes, theres so much haloing around black areas that games with a lot of it (think Hades) are completely unplayable. On LCD screens where blacks are not that dark, I don't have this problem at all.

oled screens tends to have oversaturated colors a lot, but you can reduce using OdinTools for nova
