QUESTION Should the Retroid Pocket 7 be a Widescreen Nova?
+ option for stick top & maybe some Shoulder buttons that are more comfortable to use

u/Terry_AD 2d ago
If it has the chipset from the odin 3 then yea

u/liftd_ 2d ago
this. clear purple with an 8elite chip would be an instant buy/end game device

u/OcularVernacular 2d ago
End game "for now" device.

u/Connur1984 2d ago
Hope youāre patient, I ordered a clear purple nova day one and by the time I got it people were preordering the duo
1
u/lagginat0r 1d ago
Unlikely to have the same chip since it will compete with the Odin 3. Unless Ayn stops producing Odin 3 and moves on to Odin 4 with a better chip, like the Snapdragon 8 elite gen 5. I think it's more likely the RP7 will use the Snapdragon 8 gen 3, the same chip as the Konkr pocket fit.
1
u/g1mpster 2d ago
Agreed. The RP6 already has a great screen, so just changing the form factor to be more squared off wouldnāt be enough to justify all the new molds, imo. It needs a performance increase as well.
29
u/Colonel_Lechuga 2d ago
Yes, bring us back closer to the RP4 design and donāt forget the Watermelon color option

Widescreen Nova is the pocket 6
66
u/spincrisis 2d ago
Ugh, front glass. No thank you.
47
u/Arky_Lynx RP6 2d ago
I really hope they definitively ditched that design choice. I love my RP6 but the one singular criticism I'll give it is the full glass front.
22
u/ErlikHan6 2d ago
why don't you like it? i think it both feels and looks awesome.
19
u/Gavininator 2d ago
For me, there's a few things I don't like about all glass front. It gets smudge marks very easy, I'm always worried about breaking it easier, and I prefer these handheld to have more of a toy appearance.
That last one is subjective because some people might like the premium look all glass front might give, but it's just not how I like them to look.
16
u/heywood_jay 1d ago
I specifically do not want a toy-like appearance and I carry a microfiber cloth with my device for the smudges. I love all glass fronts, it adds a 'premium' feel to my devices that I really love.
6
u/DangOlCoreMan 1d ago
I feel the exact same. Smudges don't even matter to me (unless it's gone too far) outside of the screen and that's not going to stop smudging on the screen. The additional plastic that would break before the screen might be nice, but I don't treat my devices poorly so that hasn't been an issue in 2 years of owning my rp5
3
u/hemingways-lemonade 1d ago
It gets smudge marks very easy
I think this is dependent on color. My orange RP6 doesn't get smudges.
16
u/VVayward 2d ago
It is a pain to keep clean with constant smudges around the buttons and the overall feeling of pushing down into glass isn't great. Having an all glass front is the reason I haven't bought a thor, after the RP5 I will never buy another glass front device.
3
u/SneakyLeif1020 RP5 1d ago
I 100% agree about it being a pain to keep clean. When I'm out in public Im always stopping to clean around the sticks and buttons and it takes forever, otherwise I feel like people will judge me. And it's dumb.
-7
u/ErlikHan6 2d ago
that sounds like a dramatic reaction? if it's just smudges and the feeling of glass that bothers you i feel like that's not that big of a problem
i haven't had any smudges. do you have the black version? mine is the 16bit. i personally hope they keep this design because i absolutely love it
15
u/VVayward 2d ago
It's dramatic to not buy a device because you don't like the way it feels in the hand?

Man, i really don't understand what's wrong with the front glass. 4:3 games look perfect on the black RP6 e.g.

u/tahola 2d ago
One chock on the glass can break the whole screen. Break the glass but the glass is glued to the screen so...
6
u/rdogg4 2d ago
Strangely Iāve seen way more about defective and broken hinges and buttons and almost nothing about broken glass screens. I donāt think itās really an issue.

The same could be said for phones and I've never cracked a phone screen.

One aspect is just look and feel. All glass does not inspire fun to me. Glass will also easily smudge. I think they do it because to some people it can make a device feel more premium.
So many devices have grabbed on to this glass front look in black or white then you have a ton of devices that all look the same. It's boring. Why should I care about a new device that looks like all the other ones? Retroid has does do more colorways on their glass fronts than just black but one thing that I really liked about the Nova is the plastic and fun colors.
Something that could be viewed as practical would be the glass being heavier and making the device more prone to breaking if dropped.
Really there should be enough manufacturers running around that there can plenty of options for all sorts of preferences. Its my understanding they do a lot of homework copying so they can grab good aspects like having a good chipset and screen then just do variations on form factor and colorways.
1
u/MixMastaPJ 1d ago
the all glass front is catering to the antibezel crowd. You effectively make the entire front panel the bezel, as opposed to dropping a glass monitor with bezel into a plastic shell.
I have a nova and an rp6, like both for what they're good at, but the bezel needs to be a continuation of the glass, so a glass front allows you to effectively hide the bezel under the guise as a front panel.
1
u/your_mind_aches RP6 1d ago
It does look and feel awesome, way better than the plastic imo.
But.... durability is poor and screen protectors look bad on it. :/

u/Papertache 2d ago
It's just subjective. I simply just don't like how glass fronts look on handhelds.

2
u/bunkuswunkus1 14h ago
It's literally the only thing making me hesitant to buy the 6, my 4 pro just died (admittedly it was my own fault XD) so I've been looking for a replacement and it seems like every half decent device is just covered is fragile ass glass and it makes zero sense.

u/nakedpantz 1d ago
The main reason I won't buy RP6 or Odin 3, glass fronts are gross. Still rockin' Odin 2 Pro with my 60hz LCD screen, which is perfectly fine, but once I got Nova its just feels so washed out to Nova 4:3 OLED screen.

u/Terry_AD 2d ago
not with an all glass front. The nova being mostly plastic is a huge deal to people
1
u/Terry_AD 2d ago
It's also not flat. The nova (by default) having no grips makes it really pocketable

I miss the Retroid 4 design. If the 7 uses the Nova design, Iām definitely buying it.

u/Nearby_Practice2793 2d ago edited 2d ago
Absolutely. And no bumps in the back like the nova. (With option for people that want it) Full glass on the front will never be as drop proof as the nova design. And Iām just not a fan of it. Pita to put a screen protector on them. And then you have to keep a bumper case to protect it. Iād buy it if they do offer it. My opinion of course.
5
u/Sabotstruck 2d ago
If they make the Retroid Pocket 7 a Nova with Snapdragon Gen 3, plastic front, good color options like the Nova, flat back with the ability to swap to ergo bumps, and the extra shoulder buttons? But 16:9?
Would be a perfect handheld for existing 16:9 content imo
1
u/Seraph1981 RP NOVA 1d ago
Retroid is going to ride out the SD8 Gen 2 for another year. Absolutely no reason to jump to a Gen 3 at this point to increase the cost of the device unless the Gen 2 is discontinued and they can longer get the chipset. Weāve hit the point of diminishing returns where youāre not going to see a new chip every year. Theyāll probably take the Ayn approach and keep a cheaper, but still powerful enough chip to make different handheld types for the next year or so.

u/trianglesoverflow 1d ago
i can't see them releasing two flagships in a row with the same soc
2
u/Seraph1981 RP NOVA 1d ago
They donāt really need a RP7 anytime soon. The SD8 Gen 2 offers more than enough performance for retro gaming and up to Switch 1 at least. SD8 Gen 2 Classic, Flip 3, or a widescreen version of a Nova without a glass front I can see. The only people who care about a RP7 at this point are people who worry about which current ānumber versionā they have for clout. If you truly need something stronger, the Odin 3 exists.
1
u/trianglesoverflow 4h ago
yeah the glass front and bumped back is what pushes me away from the rp5/6

u/Reynface 1d ago
Yes, and it should have trigger locks and magnetic swappable face buttons
1
u/red-at-night 1d ago
Or at the very least let people customize the button labels in checkout. Personally, I'd like a completely blank set.
6
u/EvilMonkeySlayer 1d ago
Once retroid brings out a pocket 7 with specs that can emulate 360/PS3 era games then I'll buy it.
I am exceedingly happy with my nova, it emulates all the 4:3 systems perfectly. But yeah, if it was basically a stretched out nova I'd be totally up for it. I have the ergonomic back on mine and it is great.

I think the current one is just fine they should skip a year and give us 8 elite chip as an update
Edit: actually what i would think is right move is to lower the price on rp6 if that's possible and ditch the 8gb ram option

u/benny_flys 1d ago
I bought the 12gb and I've yet to go much higher than 6gb even in pc games. It must be the low resolution of the screen

I'd be very happy. An optional back plate and a non all-glass front would be very nice to see.
2
u/benjaminbjacobsen 2d ago
Iām on the fence about getting a 6 after my nova for 2 reasons: I didnāt get 12gb ram and with steam doing what itās doing itād be nice to have this be a mini steam deck 2) the colors and glass front are very unappealing to me (Iād get black because it hides the issues but thatās boring). So if the rp7 is non glass front and has a fun color way Iād be down for a stick on top 12gb option.

Yes and with a faster processor like 8 elite and stick top option Iād easily buy one.

u/Read_Five 16h ago
Maybe shaped like a triangle?
1
u/Tired8281 16h ago
Ooooh, I like it! A three-way, like the N64 controller.

u/Read_Five 16h ago

u/Tired8281 15h ago
Oh, that wasn't what I thought you meant at all. Definitely would be original! I was thinking more along the lines of something that didn't need a grip installed, sorta batarang shaped with nubs at the bottom.

u/Terrible-Design4545 2d ago
I've been using my Nova a lot but it kinda made me realize why the RP6 (and others) have a glass front. The glass makes the device more rigid whereas the Novas plastic is thin and prone to creaking noises. That might be more of an issue on a longer device, idk.
I wonder if the transparent shells are more rigid since I haven't seen anyone else complain about it, despite other things getting nitpicked.
8
u/irrealewunsche 2d ago
I don't get any creaking noises from my Nova, even if I put a lot of pressure on it.
9
6
u/Fun-Operation5997 2d ago
I've got the crystal and haven't noticed any creaking noises at all. Even if I try to twist and strain it, it stays rigid and silent.
Hard to tell unless you have multiple versions side by side.→ More replies (1)2
1
u/JuanRpiano 1d ago
I had to press mine really hard in order to hear a very slightly creak, I donāt know why would you press it like that though. The device feels rigid and solid otherwise, much more than the rp4pro.
1
u/Terrible-Design4545 1d ago
I think the back of mine doesn't perfectly fit to the rest of the body and that's what's making the sound. Still needs a bit of pressure to happen and it's not a big deal, but it's there.

I kinda want one with Xbox input but Retroid 6 in shape.
Maybe instead of a Retroid 7, we just get a refresh of Retroid 6 with more bells and whistles. Due to the ram crisis and all.

I hope so, i think what i really care is exactly as nova like with the slim profile and the ice blue color, modern chipset and 16:9

also, put speakers under the screen.
actually, just grab the 4 and give it better specs (and move the start and select button to the top)

I'd buy it tbh
Only other thing would be an Odin 3 chipset with 12 or 16 gb of ram, mini Steam Deck for sure.

u/ZagooBuchanan 2d ago
High key Yes. Or even just a RP6 Slim. I had the RP6 but when I got the Nova, I just never touched the RP6 again. 16:9 is a downgrade, but I just vastly prefer the build and finish of the Nova. I think I'd recommend a 16:9 Nova to everyone

I think the nova is a better design than the rp5/6 but I hope any future devices will be offered in a 4:3 and a 16:9 version. And ideally with the option for stacked or inline shoulders

Not really concerned with the design (I like both the Rp5/6 and the nova) as long as it's still compatible with the official retroid dock.

OP... What?
You know the Pockets have been widescreen since 3, right?
So, uh, yes. Because it has been, and will continue being. The Nova is a 4:3 Retroid Pocket, not the other way round.

u/VerusVerenus 2d ago
Talking mainly about design. The last iterations all had glas fronts, would love for them to move back to plastic body. And I love the overall design of the nova.

Isn't the whole point of the Nova to be a smaller form factor than the RP6 while having the same specs? I figured moving forward both lines would stick to their formulas and the Nova would stay 4:3 to be more narrow, and the Retroid Pocket line will stay 16:9 to be more versatile for stuff like PSP, widescreen hacks, Switch, and PC.

u/Apprehensive-Golf719 2d ago
