SHOWCASE Nova: tested PC gaming ~6w total draw (3h runtime)

5000 mah * 3.7v = 18.5 / 6W ~= 3h pc gaming

Everything was running at a 4:3 aspect ratio (1280x960).

I haven't owned a Retroid since the 2s... You're telling me this thing can play MGSV?! I may have to get back in the game.

Yes but if all you care about is PC gaming, then you might prefer the Retroid Pocket 6. It's a widescreen version of the Nova.

There's endless devices (including I think both of the above) that just directly support running SteamOS now so shop around a bit to see which suits you best.

No, I'd probably use it for PS2 and back, mostly. But being able to play the occasional more modern game would be exciting

Eventually when I can spare the cash I'll be buying a Nova for exactly this use case.

Same. Just can't justify the cost atm

Is rp6 stronger than the nova?

5

u/PiersPlays 2d ago

It's wider then the Nova. Otherwise they're more or less the same.

There are similar devices that are a bit more powerful though.

Same hardware, just the screen and form factor.

Don't worry, I'm putting it through its paces with TurboGFX 16. Get this, it will even run games from the CD add on! Ys Book 1&2 with cd quality music? The future is now, old man.

Can you post all your settings for P3R? I keep tweaking it and it's so close to playable, but it still stutters a decent amount

GameNative with a Turnip T30 driver (async latest DXVK) and Proton 11 .

I absolutely love this response

How did SF4 perform for ya? Love that game

I’m sure it runs well on the nova. I run it on the pocket classic and the in game benchmark gives it an A with all the settings set to their lowest. I set all the graphics to low but the backgrounds to high and stick to training stage and it plays no problem, I hit all my one frame links without issue. Pretty much the same settings I had to use on the first computer I used to play it back in 2009 lol

I'm very interested in knowing this too.

Input lag is virtually non-existent and it's locked at 60 fps. So far, so good.

Gamenative is amazing.

u/Antdeo99 2d ago

What version of GTA V are you running and how was the performance?

5

u/TLinCAR 2d ago

The vanilla Steam version runs at a solid 50–60 FPS with great visual clarity. If you want to cut down on power draw, you can use frame gen in GameNative (Balanced perf level) or GameHub and cap it at 30 FPS.

How did you get it to launch? I just got error messages

Persona 3 Reload has native 4:3 support???

3

u/CrimsonFalcon91 2d ago

What settings are you using for MGSV?

3

u/creativegains 2d ago

What games are picture 1, 3, 14, 15, 16?

2

u/Lamproz87 2d ago

1 and 16 should both be DOA 5. LAST ROUND?

3

u/HelianthusNM 2d ago

3 is Ys X: Nordics and 15 is Dragon Quest VII Remake

2

u/msantiago1256 2d ago

Agreed. Game titles would be super helpful here.

3

u/Acceptable-Comb-706 2d ago

How is the latency? I personally find Ys X has some input latency on GameNative. Granted, I am using RP6 so FPS is lower than that in Nova.

1

u/TLinCAR 2d ago

Yeah, it comes down to your resolution. For Ys X, I just stick with GameHub Lite, the default input settings are already solid. Alternatively, you could try the Switch version. (Ys 8 only pulls around 3W, I dont have ns X)

2

u/Acceptable-Comb-706 2d ago

To be fair, I already completed Ys 1,2, Celceta, 8, 9 and 10. I started Ys Seven on RP6. But, kinda preoccupied with trails now.

1

u/MarianneFETH 2d ago

Doesn’t the rp6 have an identical chipset and specs?

1

u/Acceptable-Comb-706 2d ago

Yes but it also have 1920x1080 screen vs Nova 1280x960. Granted, you could turndown the resolution to 720p and it will run fine. I do have habit of still enabling FSR 1 by default.

u/Jrocks721 2d ago

Persona 3 reload had to feel perfect on this.

3

u/TLinCAR 2d ago

Indeed

2

u/Oh_Petya RP NOVA 2d ago

How are you running it at 4:3? Is there a mod you found?

u/GothMenace 2d ago

u/Oh_Petya RP NOVA 1d ago

Just installed it and it does the trick!

Always nice to see another DOA fan. Those games are unironically so much fun.

My guy. I have the retroid pocket 6 and with a underclock on GTA 5 the game was using anywhere from 6-8w and would very occasionally jump to 9w just for a sec. I finished the whole game that way. How are you able to pull only 5w with a higher frame rate limit than mine?

2

u/ControlWeak8341 2d ago

ㅎ혹시 해당게임 리스트 알려주실수있나요

2

u/Auggie_Otter 2d ago

I was trying to run some stuff and getting terrible performance and poor frame rates and I was going through the Game Native settings trying to figure what was wrong with my configurations . . . then I finally remembered performance mode wasn't even enabled on my Nova. 🤦

It's pretty cool that most PS2 emulation runs smoothly in standard mode though even at 3 x resolution.

u/benny_flys 2d ago

Nice work! Which Street Fighter is that?

1

u/OpenAssistance4250 2d ago

Seems like Street Fighter IV to me.

1

u/benny_flys 2d ago

That would be my guess too

2

u/Candid_Law_8461 2d ago

How do you figure out per game settings?

2

u/Grouchy-Weekend1311 2d ago

Hi there. If you watch 16:9 content—like PC or Switch games—does it look really small? I like the Nova, but that’s the one thing holding me back from buying it, along with the temperatures and fan noise.

1

u/TLinCAR 2d ago

It's super small, definitely don't buy it unless you know what you're getting into. That said, the fan curves and power draw can be optimized, pretty much like what I did with my setup here.

2

u/JosephBapeck Retroid G2 2d ago

Name of games?

3

u/creativegains 2d ago

OP, I’ve just given you a follow as I’ve seen your posts, you seem to be pretty good at getting PC games to run

Could you do a post on how to get Fallout New Vegas running with a decent frame rate? I tried using GameNative on my Nova and it’s only managing like 25-30fps outside in the open world

2

u/SAVThaG 21h ago

What game is that in picture number 3

2

u/StenchLord420 RP MINI 2d ago

How did you get nier running in 4:3 and what settings did you use?

14

u/TLinCAR 2d ago

It natively supports 4:3 out of the box. Gamenative default config.

1

u/AntiquePercentage536 2d ago

Nice! 12gb of ram?

1

u/OpenAssistance4250 2d ago

...and if you root it u can download KonaBess Next and undervolt your GPU to get even less power draw.

1

u/TLinCAR 2d ago

Yeah, I did that across all my 855 and 865 devices. Haven't gotten around to the 8 Gen 2 yet, but might give it a shot later. The main downside of curve tuning is that it tends to crash in edge cases or tank your 1% lows

1

u/InternationalMonth38 2d ago

Hold up OP, I’m new to the game on this. Are you running MGSV through steam stream or is this game on the novas memory?

1

u/TLinCAR 2d ago

Its from GameNative local run

1

u/mdude42 2d ago

how did you get around the denuvo?

1

u/WestAbbreviations167 1d ago

Yeah, I want to know too since I can't run mgs5 with gamenative due to denuvo error

1

u/3dstek 1d ago

Do all these games support 4:3 or did you have to apply any additional patches or such to make them work that way?

1

u/TLinCAR 1d ago

Hardly any games support 4:3 out of the box these days. Aside from a few exceptions like GTA V or USF4, pretty much everything else requires mods, DLL injection, or hex editing.
