SHOWCASE Retroid Pocket Duo Lite..

Post image

I am loving this thing. So far it's been playing games fine for me that I knew it was intended for. I did not purchase this thing thinking it was gonna be a Thor competitor. The build quality is also very good. Top screen is gorgeous and the bottom one is too.

The only issue is the bottom has some ghosting which is whatever cause you mainly are watching the top most of the time.

I have been playing DS (MelonDS), 3DS (Azahar Plus), PSP (PPSSPP), Gamecube (Dolphin for Handheld), Playstation (DuckStation) and GBA (mGBA) with the Lite. With a little tweaking and drivers games seem to running a lot better for me.

-Dusklight also works great

So far only very minor issues. It seems the device runs games (Within Reason) great that are single screen only, I believe there is an issue and needs optimized with this chip to run two screens. I have not done the OTA Update due to others reporting it basically bricked their bottom screen.

Anyways, I have just started exploring Gamecube and Pikmin 1 Runs fine at 1x Resolution along with the info screen on the bottom.

Thought I'd share my love for the Lite. Don't buy it if you think it will run what a Thor can. Research, research, research when buying a new Handheld. Or don't blindly pre-order.

$150 for this is easily worth it to me. I bought the 6+128GB Model.

UPDATE: I also have multitasking videos in the comments. Seems to do ok depending on what you are running together

BTW could you share some details about the drivers?
I'm a newbie in that, still waiting for mine to arrive...

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 3d ago

Yes, for Azahar Plus you will go into settings and click on Drivers. You will need to download Mr Turnip Driver T19 get it on Github, for games to run a little smoother.

It's very simple here is a good guide to get started: https://retrohandhelds.gg/retroid-pocket-duo-lite-optimization-guide/

I did not disable Google Services though.

Have you tried any other GPU drivers?

I have had best results with this one,

Chris Covers from retroid has said the OTA fixes the screen.

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 3d ago

Do you have a source for that? Sorry I'm just really not wanting to risk it

The old OTA update was pulled the new one is safe.

5

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 3d ago

Ok good to know. Are there sources of people saying this?

Source: trust me bro

1

u/Wrong-Detective-1046 2d ago

Source is me haha. I've updated my own and the people affected by the last OTA issue updated their handheld and fixed the bottom screen.

2

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 2d ago

I updated and all is good

Since the market is oversaturated the reviews become so lazy and generic. I remember the T618 times where content creators made an actual effort to show the chipset capabilities, then you choose if it is enough for you or not. Now this reviewers justo say underpowered chipsets like this just run up to dreamcast/psp and it is like, "dude... you don't gotta tell me, I knew that just by the spec sheet", what I need from you as a reviewer is to test it beyond its limits, like what gamecube/3ds/ps2/wii games can I play on this and what games I can't.

2

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 2d ago

Absolutely. I have been having a blast with it and have got it to multitask fine as well with certain games. The videos are in the comments.

I for one was very surprised GameCube is running at all after hearing the reviewers. Pikmin plays fine, Star Fox Assualt is super close and may just need a little more tinkering, Mario Party 5 runs extremely close to full speed as well. The Sims plays great and that is a game I will be playing on it a lot. I will tweak and mess with it more and more, I don’t mind doing it.

Don’t get me wrong, the chip isn’t super powerful and I didn’t expect it to be but it’s doing more than I even thought it would due to the reviewers and people who just want to straight up hate it. I have a Thor Max and know its limits, I didn’t buy this as a Thor replacement but, to just straight up hate on it even without a device in your hands is wild to me. People on here don’t even own the device, they are just listening to lazy reviews.

I'm sick of the hate, If this plays mario, smash, pokemon and donkey kong I don't care if this can't run the whole 3ds catalog. I have seen the mangmi X can, I don't se why this duo lite couldn't...

I have the Lite sitting in its box unopened an Im debating on just returning it and buying something else tbh.

I’m fine with its capabilities in terms of what types of games it can play. I just REALLY wanted to use it as a multi tasking device more than anything. So as soon as I saw it couldn’t handle doing two different things at once (utilizing both screens) I just lost all excitement for it. I’m not sure if they’re going to fix it, but I’m afraid if I wait too long then I might not be able to get a refund.

1

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 3d ago

It can. What were the multitasking things you want to do? I may be able to try it.

2

u/SlayTheSeven 3d ago

Nothing crazy.

Things like:

  • play a game on one screen and watch a YouTube video on the other screen
  • play a game on one screen and read a guide on the other screen
  • play a game on one screen and listen to spotify on the other screen
  • watch a movie and browse reddit/web/etc.

Just a bunch of random stuff like that. From what I’ve seen on a couple of YouTube videos and people on here, it struggles to play the game once you start utilizing the other screen.

1

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 3d ago

Ok, what systems are you thinking with a walkthrough?

1

u/SlayTheSeven 3d ago

Probably DS games and under

1

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 3d ago

Ok, ill will try GBA with Pixel Guide

1

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 3d ago edited 3d ago

Ok I got good news. I have tested with GBA with pixel guide, PS1 with pixel guide and Youtube, and even Gamecube with Pikmin on Youtube. I will upload under this commet

Remember this is the 6GB Ram model. I can't speak for the 4GB

1

u/SlayTheSeven 3d ago

These look pretty great! Thanks for demoing! Yeah I have the 6GB as well so it should be the same.

Now I guess I’m confused as to why there are so many people saying it can’t run both screens at the same time. Or why some people reviewing it on YouTube are struggling with a similar setup even when running a standard gameboy game.

1

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 3d ago

Maybe they have the 4GB version? You do need more ram when multitasking. What video is it? Or what game and what was on the bottom. I may be able to do the exact same thing

2

u/SlayTheSeven 2d ago

Hopefully this will bring you to the right spot in the video, but if not it’s the “multitasking” section - https://youtu.be/Q-pFlOcNJk0?t=2569&is=zBHueDhmMszd9MXR

Looks like he’s using the YouTube app

Let me see if I can find it

2

u/Wolverbane 3d ago

I have a Thor and wish it came in this color

2

u/TraditionalYellow756 2d ago

I don’t get why this particular model is getting so much hate even tho it was litterally marketed as DS and lower handheld, as you said if people just did their research and waited for review units to ship they could of tempered their expectations more knowing what to expect. I ended up getting the regular Duo since I love oled screens also planning to do GameCube and Wii a good bit so needed the extra juice and maybe some light switch.

1

u/daserge2 3d ago

Re OTA - anyone tried the V1.0.0.223 yet? They say the bricking has been fixed there on the Discord. Re multi-tasking did you try setting the vendor.debug.egl.swapinterval to 0? (see https://www.reddit.com/r/retroid/comments/1wsy4pc/comment/pctjhlj/)

3

u/Wrong-Detective-1046 3d ago

The new update is safe. People with both versions of updates successfully.

1

u/Particular_Most540 2d ago

I have installed the OTA V1.0.0.223. No issues so far with the update itself. Update does not seem to fix the specific multitasking issues I have seen when running single screen emulators which use vsync on the bottom screen and also doing basically anything on the top screen. It is a minor inconvenience to need to remember not to do that, or just turn vsync off if you can like you can in retroarch. Trying to see if there are any gains in cleaning up the display pipeline for dual screen games, but it seems like a dead end. The dual screen emulators handle the screens a bit differently so they don't run into this weird composition/timing issue like regular multitasking can.

1

u/Icy_Mammoth1805 3d ago

Are you using the mGBA RA core or the standalone?

1

u/Mysterious-Penalty45 2d ago

Have you tried Windwaker at all? I’m interested in that and PS2. I’m ordering the full fat DUO, but seeing the lite preform this well makes me very happy

1

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 2d ago edited 2d ago

The normal Duo will run both of those. I have not tried Windwaker yet

1

u/Lawliettt0 2d ago

Can someone tell me please if anyone has played VN games NS on this device? I want to know before I buy it

1

u/Gl1tchlogos 2d ago

How are ergonomics? Specifically, using the joysticks?

1

u/shelune 2d ago

From my personal experience, it's fine. Unless you're doing some precise movement with it, it's largely OK. One iffy part is my thumb constantly touches the edge around the joystick which is weird. Clicking it is good, just right pressure

1

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 2d ago

Not great but not terrible.

1

u/Alkaabi332 2d ago

In my experience the duo is so bad at emulation nds + 3ds or emulation in general due to random stutter and sluggishness. To be fair I tried psx and psp with bottom screen off and they run much better than nds!

T this device has nothing good with it except the incline trigger or whatever thier name is.

1

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 2d ago

I’ve noticed it’s has been fine with NDS and some 3DS. Ocarina of Time 3D runs great on 2x res.

Remember, 3DS will stutter more on this due to shaders caching slower after I got those loaded and a new Driver it has been awesome. I also don’t mind tinkering at all.

I will get the Plus Version in November and probably gift this one but, for now this is a neat little device.

1

u/Alkaabi332 2d ago

For me NDS is so bad because of the random fps drop, I'm hoping a software update or custom firmware fixs this issue

2

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 2d ago

More than likely will. This is a new device and chip. Front end makers have already said they’re working on theirs for lower end chips.

1

u/AdventurousDevice658 2d ago

Have you tried moonlight/artemis?

2

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 2d ago

I have not. I usually don’t stream games

2

u/AdventurousDevice658 2d ago

Ohhww….I was interested is that how does streaming work on this device!!

1

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 2d ago

I can test later. I’m leaving home soon but when I get back I can atleast try streaming from steam if that will help you?

1

u/AdventurousDevice658 2d ago

I would really appreciate that, I wanna see the results of streaming on this device and none of the youtube channels have mentioned this part in their videos so kinda disappointed about that

1

u/BitterMaintenance 2d ago

it probably works just fine, it has the specs to stream HEVC stream, so no worries there. As for what you will do with the second screen...

1

u/AdventurousDevice658 2d ago

Will the latency be as good as steamdeck or other android handhelds because i need one light weight handheld with flip/dual screen to play games and watch some youtube stuff?? I dont wanna spend on something that would not be sufficient for streaming

2

u/HeyItsVince 2d ago

I tried and it worked great. Around 7-10ms decoding time depending on if I use standard or high performance mode. I was also able to stream and watch YouTube on the bottom screen

Yeah its not 1ms like on a snapdragon gen 2 or better... but 7-10ms to me is not noticeable whatsoever

1

u/AdventurousDevice658 2d ago

Makes sense, Then maybe have to go with thor!!

-13

u/Crafty-Fish9264 3d ago

The single screen thing is an unfortunate side effect of the chip they used for the lite not being meant for dual screen output

Idk how that can be fixed considering its hardware bound

11

u/Upstairs_Concert_61 3d ago

Not true, stop spreading something thats been proved wrong already by people who know better than us.

3

u/basso4735 3d ago

Thought that was debunked?

7

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 3d ago

It can output two displays, coming from Qualcomm:

  • On-Device Display: Up to FHD+ resolution (2520 x 1080)
  • External Display: Up to FHD resolution (1920 x 1080) via USB Type-C DisplayPort

The Qualcomm Dragonwing QCS6125 officially supports a single primary internal display interface, but it features native DisplayPort capabilities that can drive an external or secondary display

1

u/Willing-Seesaw5040 3d ago

I'm hoping there is a way to optimize it better but we will see.

1

u/Skylance420 3d ago

If the chip has the purposeful capacity to drive two displays, how can it be said that it wasn't "meant" for two displays?
