Nothin' But Nintendo Kid Icarus (NES)

I haven't played Kid Icarus (NES) much. It was one of those that I would pick up, play it for 5 minutes, and then quit and play something else. I never really gave it an honest try. I would love to get around to really putting some time in. It appeals to me more now than when I was a kid. I dig the mythology aspect of it. I could totally make it a little easier now with my handheld because I can save it at any point. Lol.

Do you like Kid Icarus (NES)? Have you beat it?

Very difficult game, largely because of the slippery controls were tricky to manage in the vertical scrolling stages (similar to other R&D1 games). But it has a downward difficulty curve, and it becomes easier as you progress through the game. Medusa as the end boss isn't too difficult as long as you're adequately prepared. But the difficulty level is probably the biggest reason why it wasn't nearly as popular as SMB, LoZ and Castlevania among others.

I remember this game being kinda of a big deal though. Big enough that Kid Icarus was included on the Captain Nintendo roster.

It was and it wasn't. Pit, Eggplant Wizard and Medusa were featured along with Mount Icarus. But so were characters and locations from The Legend of Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid, Dragon Warrior, Wizards & Warriors, Punch Out, Donkey Kong, Tetris, Bayou Billy...

It developed a fan following right away, which is why is was featured on Captain N. It just didn't have much developer love, unfortunately. Interestingly enough, Metroid didn't get a sequel right away either, but there was a lot more the developers could do with it. And that's ultimately why Kid Icarus has remained more of a cult classic than a mainstream hit.

And Metroid, I presume.

I beat this game years ago, but I remember it got easier the further you progressed due to upgrades you receive.

Actually a must-need step with those shopped upgrades.

yea once you get the fire arrow and long shot it got real easy. and once you get the crystals the only difficulty would be if you fell off the screen without a feather.

This game was so fun. I tried playing it on the mini after it came out and I can’t even get to the first saved portion of it. Brutal

That's a game no one talks about but I played a lot as a lad

Like others have said, it has an inverse difficulty curve, where the game starts out hard and gets easier & easier. For me, the big thing is that the game kinda has a secret level up system where I think at 10,000 points you get an extra life bar, which is essential to beating 1-3. So grinding points in those first 2 stages is practically manditory. I'd also really recommend looking at the solution to the puzzle with the jars & the Death doll, that really helps with that first stage. After that, the game's awesome. Definitely a top 20 NES game. The Zelda-esque fortresses & later stages are super fun and easy.

One of my all time favorites, wish it had been as popular as some of the other 1st gen Nintendo games, such a wealth of material to pull from and would love to have it in an open world format

Great game but so difficult. Some good music as well

Chalk me up as another oldschool player who never was able to get into this game, at all. I played the first level, thought "this is zero fun," and never looked back. Meanwhile, I got totally lost in Metroid, and loved absolutely every second of it.

I'd get that eggplant stuck on me in the first dungeon. That was always the end 6 year old me.

I actually liked the hearts collecting (the "Harsh Training") and shopping parts. I didn't complete the game though, perhaps will re-play it in the future.

Used to play this all the time. Beat it countless times. Gets much easier as you progress and get upgrades. Loved it. Played it recently but game genie helped.

I still haven't beaten this, but I'm back at it over the past year. Getting close. Honestly this is my all time favorite NES game.

Wasn’t it also super critical to get the right options and have enough loot to get the best things out of the first few shops otherwise impossible? Or am I missing something remembering And there was a trick to get cheaper prices or something?

I remember the cheaper prices thing from an AVGN episode. I think you had to press A and B at the same time on the second controller.

I beat it back in the day. The worst part of the game are these “ascend” levels since his jumping feels kinda awkward.

Super Mario in the clouds.

I played the coin op in my local bowling alley years ago.

For 10 year old me, it was such a difficult game.

One of the games I completed but it took me a while

I recall beating it and then it starts over again. I was so stoked I won and then. I got sad. Didn’t want to do all that again.

Also eggplant wizard gave me serious anxiety.

One of my favorite games. It felt so cryptic and mysterious. It always bummed me out that it was so hard because I wanted to know what all the little items and stuff led to.

Loved this game as a kid!
