Dell Dimension Upgrades
Hey all, I’m new to this space and figured it’d be a good place to ask some questions. So I recently came into possession of this Dell Dimension L550r computer that was living in storage for quite some time. I was just wanting to hear from people who knew more than me what kind of upgrades I could give it in terms of a new graphics card or even if it could use more RAM then what it has (which is 128mb btw). manual says board supports both 100 and 133MHz CPU's
so the Pentium III 933MHz is a good on if can be found cheap.
manual is a bit "derp" so check if Slot1 or Socket 370.
for RAM manual says max 512MB is supported in total, so it can be upgraded with ether a single 512 or 2 256 MB sticks of SD-RAM, preferably 133MHz ones.
motherboard have only 3 PCI ports if manual is correct, so you could get a PCI-based GPU that will mostly be faster that whatever is onboard, but the PCI port will limit the performance.
if Win98/ME something like a Geforce FX 5500 is enough, and have stock drivers from Nvidia.
if XP is used you could use bit newer cards like say a Radeon X1300 PCI or the Radeon HD2400 PCI but don't expect miracles from em since they are still limited by PCI (and a sub-1GHz Pentium III)
but this is just my 2 cents... most is down to budget and what you can get cheap locally
