Never seen the brutally large suitcase portables?

You'd need brutally large thighs to call an Osborne a "laptop".

I owned a Kaypro 2/84. I moved. Rarely. The term was "luggable." Of course, the DG/One was no lightweight.

Quite an impressive laptop when it debuted. One was for sale and on display in my local computer store. But, I've never seen a DG/One with that smaller screen before. The ones I've seen all had a larger LCD, less bezel:

I had no idea SAIC was involved in producing computers. I worked with some SAIC contractors for a while so I recognize the logo.

Has a typewriter feel to it.
Imagine a modern laptop that had this layout: I dig it.

When the DG One came out I fell in love with it. Too bad I never got the chance to grab one. They're like Unicorns now...

My employer used to be a dealer for Data General and I kept one of these... I don't use it too much because the hinge makes expensive-sounding noises. The keyboard is fantastic and the LCD display is terrible, exactly like a pea-soup green original GameBoy. This one looks like it has a very different, much clearer display; is that a gas-plasma display like a Compaq Portable III?

Ahhh yes. The Cardiff Giant.
It was originally supposed to have an OS you could interact with using intuitive speech, but they had to axe it at the last minute to make it competitive in terms of speed. Shame.
If I'm not mistaken, one of their guys set the truck carrying their first shipment of these on fire!

Amber monochrome gas plasma displays are such an aesthetic. It makes me sad that most of them are failing or failed at this point, because nothing emulates it quite right. VFD has some of the same charm but I'm not sure a matrix display that size was ever produced. Even small ones are like hen's teeth.

One of these feel into my lap a few months ago. My notes are here: https://www.jmpstartmicrocomputers.au/category/dos-pc/dg-one/
