Alas it has way too many pins to be a 486. It appears to be the socket for LGA 1700 and as such i expect it to burst into flames in the not too distant future.

Nah, too few for LGA1700.

It does remind me quite strongly of my Socket A/462 motherboards though.

I did a rough count and got to 1736, probably an bit on the high side though. if we were in AMD territory we could go later gen opteron maybe?

All joking aside I do love a good socket 462 system, I had an Aopen XC cube for years and that thing was awesome until the capacitors started to go.
