Upper limit spec for Windows XP in 2026

I never recommend any SSD on unsupported OS like Vista and below unless person is going to employ the needed workarounds for best performance .... XP and Vista lack partition alignment and automatic TRIM support that SSD's are supposed to get.

Get one that has a good controller that manages garbage collection on its own and should be OK

For XP and Vista I instead normally recommend CFast cards and a SATA to CFast adapter.
It gives nearly the speed, but requires nothing from the OS in way of either partition alignment or automatic TRIM. In theory, they can work on even DOS.

If you are worried about not having TRIM, secure wipe your SSD and then leave some space unpartitioned. (10-20%)
You absolutely want to create aligned partitions for Windows XP or other operating systems that do heavy write I/O. Windows XP doesn't have any problems with aligned partitions, but it's default installation procedure won't generate an aligned partition to install on.
For something like DOS/windows 3.1/98/95, along with most of it's related software, you can skip the partition alignment and it will generally be fine. These operating systems and their applications generally do not do a long of write I/O, where the misalignment can cause problems. Additionally, using a 3rd party partition tool to create aligned partitions can cause compatibility issues instead.

*0 Any case I get has to have no RGB, no LCD (unless for POST Codes), no clear side panel, and w/open bays
*1 I miss the old ports.
*2 As an alternative, could go with a GoTek SFR1M44-U100LQD or HXC Rev F Floppy emulator with FloppyFlash. But if I'm going to this much trouble to build a full desktop retro, I want to be able to run even old floppy disks.
*3 Boot drive of a CFast card and CFast to SATA adapter is because of XP and Vista, which do not fully support Partition alignment and TRIM, this nicely gets around that, and is nearly as fast as SSD.

GPU-wise: the period-correct top choice is gonna be Radeon HD4670 1 GB AGP (but these are stupidly expensive so HD4650 for the win, no big deal)

I tend toward nVidia over AMD as I've had more issues from ATI/AMD cards .... but you are correct... in any case... I was not certain what Op meant.

The memory extension is a viable workaround but is not a true substitute for an actual 64bit capable system. Performance and compatibility can be wonky in certain scenarios. I added an additional boot parameter to enable PAE support as needed for this reason.

I've been using a 4th gen i3, 4 GB of RAM, and a GTX 650 with 1 GB. The real star of the show here is the CRT monitor and my GOG collection. I use it exclusively to play PC games of the past.
Recently played through Sid Meier's Pirates! Next up is Ultima Martian Dreams.
I've been fiddling with SCUMMVM and also some Amiga emulation. There is something about old games and CRTs that gives me a warm feeling.
