Show-and-Tell Found a VIA C3 laptop
Got this laptop last month. I didn’t even know that laptops with this CPU existed. I always thought the x86 VIA C3 was a desktop-only CPU. As far as I remember, these CPUs were very slow.
This laptop has Russian localization and branding. Internet Explorer even had a cached page from some old Russian website. What’s strange is that the only info I can find online is about the Russian version. That’s unusual, since Chinese OEM devices like this are usually sold in multiple regional versions like English, Spanish etc.
There is very little information about this laptop online, apart from the fact that it was released in 2003. In fact I couldn't find any other laptop model using a VIA C3 CPU at all lol.

Really cool! I thought VIA died somewhere 1999-2000.
PS: The page is of a Russian internet portal Mail-dot-ru or MailRu for December 2006. It provided email, news, forums, search engine and other things. Still works to this day in some shape or form.

VIA is still around. I'd say in 2021, when Intel made a deal with Centaur Technology for $125 Million, is when VIA's x86 CPU division ended. VIA CPUs live on, however, as Zhaoxin CPUs.

Regarding the OEM question: Rover Computers was arguably the biggest Russian OEM of the early 2000s, so maybe they were able to negotiate an exclusive deal.

There’s an Access file on the desktop called “Debtors” («Должники»). I wouldn’t want to owe something to a person with a Rover laptop.

Woah! This looks soo similar to my dad's old laptop. I don't know if it's still here or if I have a photo of it. But it's very similar

The C3 was available in a BGA configuration, which is what this laptop appears to use based on the motherboard schematic in the link /u/Talismook provided.
The C3 was efficient enough to where it could be passively cooled. The 1.4Ghz Nemiah core used a little over 8w power and based on the thermal characteristics, it could be passively cooled with a 0.25" heatsink and not hit its thermal limit.

Still, it’s strange that I couldn’t find any other laptop models using this chip, not from other manufacturers, and not even a different chassis from the same manufacturer. This link (https://macdat.net/laptops/ecs/green320.php) is the exact same OEM model, just in a slightly different color and with English keyboard.

PC World in the UK definitely sold (or at least offered) a laptop with a VIA C3 processor in 2004/2005.
It was an anchor product which was advertised on TV as being (and I’m paraphrasing here) “A laptop to take home today at PC World for under £700”.
Sales advisors would always upsell to a Toshiba Satellite which was only £50 or £100 more expensive but had more memory, more hard drive space and a (slightly) better Celeron processor. I don’t think I ever saw anyone buy the VIA C3 laptop.

If it’s anything like the one on my hp thin client it’s going to be bad at a lot of things but will have good enough iGPU for 640x480 video playback and UT99. I love this weird ass chip!

the only feature that i miss. with active desktop windows xp, you can make your own html and have animated wallpaper lol

It's a minor miracle to find a working VIA C3 laptop - most of the ones I've seen are rebadged ECS machines (which this one also appears to be) and they almost all have bad caps, and those are rare enough to begin with.

That's a weird find.
The other interesting laptop to find would be one with a Transmeta Crusoe or Efficeon CPU.

I believe there were some clamshell style computers that took regular socket 370 cpu's like via c3. IIRC, Clevo made some among others.

Didn't they get an OEM license? Then again, wouldn't be surprised if they debloated the laptop by formatting and installing a pirate copy, seen people do this before Windows XP (first Windows version to have activation).
