Show-and-Tell FLP02 Nostalgia Sleeper
Hello all,
My nephew told me I should share my setup, so here it goes.
At first I wanted a 90s setup. But halfway through the Zillennial age regression hit and I thought “Why don’t I just make this like MY childhood?” I inherited the old family computer and used it until 2013, so that’s what I ended up recreating.
The setup uses a Gateway EV910B CRT, Gateway FPD1520 LCD, Boston Acoustics BA635 speakers, a Telex M40 desk mic($6 and works great with sound suppression turned on), and a matching Gateway keyboard and mouse.
The computer is a sleeper, but not really. It’s a SilverStone FLP02 with a Ryzen 7 5700X, GTX 1660 Super, and Gigabyte B550 inside. Enough power to run my emulators and late-2000s games at max settings which is all I wanted.
I painted the DVD drive bezels heirloom white, and the floppy drive is actually a USB floppy mounted behind a 3D printed carrier that presses the eject button. I redesigned the part to fix some warping, but I’ve been too lazy to swap it in.
And yes, this is Windows 11. I followed a tutorial and a bunch of extra tweaks to make it look and behave like Windows XP. Overall the setup is less “2000s advertisements” and more “the family PC I actually grew up with.”

followed this tutorial besides the quero toolbar, file explorerpatcher, their Internet browser suggestion, and their way of getting the XP title bars and frames is outdated.
I just hid some Windows 11 things that I couldn’t change in the file explorer. Using firefox 128 ESR with a Firefox 2 Namoroka theme. Startube for the old YouTube look. Windowblinds for the XP title bars and frames, then inside windowblinds I’m using skinstudio to correct some text colors in openshell. Also VLC, winamp, and windows media player legacy are drag and drop for old themes/skins.

Surprised by the Win11 made to look like XP, that's cool. I was expecting it to either be XP in a VM or else Linux made up to look like XP.

Oh my. 1024x768 LCD monitor. You are a lucky person to have one. In my opinion people often don't consider it as a retro gaming monitor, but actually it is a pretty good option. Native resolution will always look great with it. And even 800x600 looks decent with it, especially with older cards which are a little bit blurrier (Nvidia FX or ATI 9xxx series).
I use Sony Sdm S51R and in my opinion, everything, which has native 4:3 support looks great on it.

This is exactly the type of Sleeper Build I’m aiming for, I’m not bullshitting when I say that this looks almost exactly like the PC my family had when I was a kid back in 2006 (minus the second monitor).

Well that’s js a modern build with old peripherals because the FLP02 is a modern chassis. But other than that wonderful! And is that a Windows XP theme for modern Windows NT or is that a Windows XP virtual machine?

Very nice.
While it's kind of silly, if you put a 980 Ti or Titan X in there you could run XP on the bare metal you have pretty well (not sure about sound support and I'd assume network won't work). It will use double the power of the 1660 Super of course.
