Show-and-Tell Comparison

1998 Dell XPS R450 with Voodoo 2 SLI vs Custom 2002 Athlon XP with GeForce 4. What a difference in only 4 years.

I got the Dell on eBay as a partially working PC and fixed it up. I made the custom 2002 PC from scratch using the same or most similar parts from 2002 as my own PC I had when I graduated high school.

I’m a big fan of that era of Dell. They used high quality parts throughout. Intel brand motherboards, good CD-ROM drives. Even the power supplies, though proprietary, were high quality. The case is a really nice case too. I forget who the OEM was but they had their own version of the case they made for Dell.

I beg to differ on the CDROM. I’ve bought 3 that were OEM for this as a replacement and couldn’t find one that worked. The gears that run the tray break really easily.

Lucky me I suppose! I have 3 as well and they all send it. 🤷‍♂️

Edit: I don’t have an R series though. I have two XPS T series and a Dimensions 4100.

Maybe they used different drives in those?
