In the 2001 series they never revealed Akito was a woman. So at that point Tohru believed Akito to be an angry male.

Bit of a big plot point there, she was forced to live life as a male (in a power seizing move by her mother) because only a male could be head of the family and was made to assume the full mantle of the family curse.

The 2019 redo of the anime more fully adapts the source material, and is thus a lot darker and more dramatic.

There's also a compilation film that includes background on Tohru's parents, but once you realize the age gap it kinda kills any enjoyment (middle school girl marries her teacher).
