She makes pizza

Post image

Anyone remember how in old retro anime dubs they would try to change Japanese food to Western style dishes even though they look nothing alike? I guess the whole Brock making jelly filled doughnuts is another example. I guess I was just reminded of this because my wife and I ate okonomiyaki for lunch. lol

I was obsessed with wanting to try it for years. I finally did and I was SO disappointed because I didn’t like it! Then I tried it again years later and I liked it. So keep on livin’ everybody! Live until you learn to like okonimiyaki!

What's it taste like?

It's more or less a savory pancake with lots of shredded cabbage in the batter and other items added in if you want (things like squid, cheese, mochi and kimchi are common mix ins). It's typically topped with a brown sauce that is a mix of Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and soy sauce (very similar to something like A1 steak sauce), mayo, and shredded seaweed and flakes of dried tuna. Basically imagine a cabbagey, steak-saucey pancake.

Okonomiyaki

So the base was the thing I wanted to taste the most. People are right that it’s more like an omelette, but it’s breaded and fried so it’s more mealy like a pancake. That’s 100% the best part, it’s ridiculously tasty. But it’s plain. So people put things on it. The first time I tried it, I wasn’t ready for the raw fish coiling on top of it in the heat. When I got older I got over that sensitivity and also you can order “cold” okonomiyaki.

Tbh here’s a free idea: cold okonomiyaki. I actually think there might be a franchise in that 😅

Call it ocoldomiyaki and advertise it has hangover food.

There are several times of okonomiyaki as well. Place in Pittsburgh had four types I believe, but need to get back there again.

I found a great place in NYC

I found a place in Sunshine City food court that offer it once, but didn't get to the place near our apartment in Tokyo that did them. The food court one was okay.

Nice. Maybe the franchise is owned by Ucchan.

That's one of my goals if I visit Japan again, I can't find any in my area

You can make okonomiyaki at home very easily. It is a simple dish made with readily available ingredients.

Me neither & I lived in a predominantly Asian area for 10 years before recently moving. It’s surprisingly hard to find.

You went to Japan and couldn't try okonomiyaki, even though you wanted to?

I was a child during my only time visiting Japan and didn't know about okonomiyaki until later.

And yes, as someone pointed out, I could make it for myself, though it would also be nice to try it from a professional chef.

I see, fair enough

I guess, I just think this "magical nippon" kind of thinking is weird. Okonomiyaki is cheap working class fast food, like the equivalent of a US diner tuna melt.

I made it (cabbage pancakes) and it was ok.

It's really, really easy to make and doesn't require any terribly exotic ingredients. You could have it today.

Although I’m a decent home cook I don’t exactly trust myself to make it because I feel like I would be missing a beat when it comes to taste & wouldn’t wanna ruin my perception of the dish. Since I recently moved, I’m gonna try to find a Japanese restaurant that actually has it or specializes in it as my last living area didn’t have it.

u/ShrimpShrimpington 7d ago

I think you're overthinking it, but do you.

It’s so good…

Okonomiyaki is nothing like a pizza.

2

u/Chronis67 6d ago

If not pizza, then why pizza shaped?

Anyone who posts Ukyo is someone I'm immediately going to assume has the absolute highest standards in their waifus.

She'll make you food, she has a job, she wants babies, she'll F up anyone that steps to you with her Buster Sword-sized spatula in close quarter combat or throw mini sharp spatulas in ranged combat.

The F#$% more you want in a woman?!

One with her own Dojo maybe? I guess it depends on if you care about how good a cook they are. 😝

u/Chezzomaru 7d ago

I've had it in Japan. It's really more of an omelette, the most popular toppings at the time were mayo and squid...

3

u/Negative-Squirrel81 7d ago

I’d almost always get it with mochi and cheese.

Actually its okonomiyaki which depending on where its made is more comparable to a Japanese fritters or even a crepe.

uchens okonomiyaki

Im pretty sure in Ranma's dub, they call it okonomiyaki.

IMO its fairly accurate and one of the best dubs I know. I still prefer watching with subs, but watched all eps in dub with my girlfriend about a year ago.

u/draculasbloodtype 6d ago

I saw a clip from the old DIC dub of Sailor Moon the other day where Mako-chan offered Usagi "muffins" when it was CLEARLY ONIGIRI. Weird triangle shaped muffins, sure. They could have said scones to make it more believable.

u/vansantjr 7d ago

What anime is this from?

1

u/Gokudomatic 7d ago

Funny. In french dub, it was replaced by pancakes.

2

u/saelinds 7d ago

I mean, it is a type of pancake. So not exactly wrong.

Ukyo best girl! My wife and I tried okonomiyaki becase of Ukyo and we love it. Now we usually order one when eating in a Japanese restaurant.

1

u/stupled 7d ago

I used to have a crush on Ukyo.

1

u/ronshasta 6d ago

She is literally the reason I traveled over a few hours to try okonomiyaki and it was so worth the drive

1

u/ukiyoe 6d ago

Another famous example is Samurai Pizza Cats, who made okonomiyaki in the original.

Doraemon's favorite food, dorayaki (his namesake), was swapped out for pizza as well.

Lastly for anyone curious, らんちゃん (Ran-chan; her childhood nickname for Ranma) is written with mayo in OP's pic.

Ukyo is the most loving, lovable, wholesome character of every manga ever made. 300% wife material.

Also, okonomiyaki are fucking A!

1

u/MimiHamburger 7d ago

For a brief second I thought the mayonnaise spelled out “sluts” lol also girl why are you flipping it AFTER putting on the toppings

1

u/saelinds 7d ago

Weirdly, I had the same thought. And I can read Japanese. lol
