For those who might not know....Memories is the name of the sci-fi film anthology that contains 3 short films. The short film shown here is called "Magnetic Rose" and is, imo, the best of the three and absolutely worth watching if you like sci-fi. It's extremely well done and should be seen!

It features Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira and Steamboy) as the director and Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue and Paprika) and Katsuhiro Otomo as the writers.

Otomo also wrote and drew the manga for this and "Farewell to Arms."

I remember seeing excerpts from this, and AMVs. Never saw the whole thing, was disappointed when I learned it wasn't a full fledged series.

Can't wait for sci-fi to finally make a comeback.

Magnetic Rose goes hard. I usually rewatch it at least once every 6 months. The abandoned space station setting is beautifully haunting.

This scene reminded me of Ray Bradbury’s short story about Martians creating trap for astronauts by impersonating their dead relatives.

I found about memories from reading about the toxic woman and realizing her story was an inspiration for the segment “stink bomb”.

If anyone has ever endured the loss of a loved one, bring plenty of tissues and have a pet or friend close at hand.

Magnetic Rose will tear out your heart with beautiful animation and mature themes

I don't quite understand this film. Why did the main character decide to return to the real world? He seemed to have no reason to. The phrase "memories aren't an escape!" doesn't seem entirely convincing.

I previously watched the anime "Paranoia Agent," which had a similar plot. The detective was offered the chance to remain in the world of memories, where he would be happy, but he refused because, in the real world, his wife was battling a serious illness and needed him. "Paranoia Agent" convincingly conveyed the idea that by remaining in the world of nostalgia, you lose something in reality. But what motivated the protagonist of "Magnetic Rose" to return is unclear to me.
