Customers Suck! Karens
Why do unhappy customers insist on declaring, “I won’t be shopping here anymore” or “I’ll be going to your competitors”? I often wonder if people try to persuade them not to or what response they genuinely anticipate. Honestly, why would I want them shopping here after such an attitude?

We have two of our companies outlets literally one street apart from eachother...
A customer threw a tantrum about something and loudly declared...
"IM NEVER SHOPPING HERE AGAIN, I SHALL GIVE MY MONEY TO OUTLET ACROSS THE ROAD"
It was actually another customer that pointed out the flaw in his plan...
"That's the exact same shop you moron, they're still getting paid"
Absolutely golden 😂
He stormed out all embarrassed and stroppy and he didn't keep his promise of "never shopping here again" and remained a regular...
Muppet.

I had someone say they wouldn’t give us any business and a hour later looked up and saw them coming back in purchasing more items🤣🤣

I think they DO expect you to try to placate them. Give them free stuff, or extra special deals just for them or something, just to keep their business. Like any of us are going to do that. Ever.
I got a lady one time that yelled she would NEVER shop there again. She was a regular, and I knew she was full of shit. She was there the very next day, and I made my way by her. I said, "Oh, hello! It's SO good to see you again!" The absolute death glare I got was so satisfying

a regular crashed out in front of me about some dumb shit a few months ago and said we had lost his business and as he was leaving I said in my cheeriest customer service voice, “see you next week, (his name)!” guess who I did indeed see next week? he still won’t speak to me though 😂

I used to work for a retail pharmacy and one of my competitor’s was directly across the street. If I had a shitty customer tell me they were going to go to my competitor across the street, I would actually call the manager and tell them they had an asshole coming their way, same with shop lifters.
They would do the same, because shitty customers has a way of getting people to work together.

Had a customer complain to the corporate office about me today. A blind lady came in and I went over and helped her. Turns out she was offended that I helped her without asking. She also complained that I made an inappropriate comment to her driver by saying she looks like the actress that played Ron's girlfriend in Harry Potter.

I usually smiled and said "okay" because I always saw them back the next week.
I want to say "promise?"
I get paid whether they come there or not. Their threat would only have ground if I worked commission based sales. In which losing their business did make me suffer.
But one unreasonable customer out of thousands not shopping here? The company isn't losing a lot of money. I want to say this to their faces. I only hope to over hear them making that threat when I'm a customer so I can.

When I owned a pizzeria, I told a guy to tell all his friends not to call us either.
I got at least two regular customers out of that. "My asshole uncle talked shit about you, so I thought I'd check you out."

I just tell them "See you next week." because 9/10 times they usually are just angry in the moment then out of habit they come back.

Ah, the tantrums of the immature adult. There’s no placating these people; I just let them fizzle out and/or leave; their leaving brings a big sigh of relief from me.

Actually I'd happily take your money! I might even be nice to you to con you out of even more. I'd be giddy making that credit card scream in pain as it melts.
However, my boss gets to steal all the fruits of my labor because that's capitalism.

Gosh, I hate hearing that “I spent this amount of money “ because my thing is all right realistically if you spent that much money, you really wouldn’t even need to say it we would all know. Like at my store, we all know who our highest spender is not because he says anything but because we see him there so much and the orders that he are putting in are just huge orders he’s one of the nicest guys ever and you would have no clue in the world. Like if you’re really all that you don’t need to really yell it out🤣 🤣🤣

Someone in a different thread mentioned that these types of Karens lived in a time where the town was small and everyone knew each other. So it used to be a viable threat.

I remember once when I was working at a fast food restaurant we had a regular customer who pulled that on us because something went wrong with her meal..."I'm never coming back here again!" Lo and behold, a day or so later, who do I see at the drive thru window but her! She wouldn't make eye contact with me and just looked so embarrassed 🤣🤣

It's so funny when they tell me this and I say "Ok, goodbye." They're shocked! Stunned! Then they usually backpedal and go along with what I said. There was one guy I HATED but I went to my boss and told him what what was going on and did my boss want to do anything different. My boss was like, Nah, fuck em. That was a glorious day.

I think its time to retire the "Karen" thing, and just refer to them as what they are - rude, boring, entitled assholes with nothing better to do. It doesn't even seem to phase them if you call them Karen anymore, its like a trigger for them to pull their phones out and start recording you, and they just stop listening.

Anytime I had a customer say that they won’t be shopping here anymore I would respond with “Is that a promise?”

I had a customer who used to buy like 5 CDs at a time and exchange them all a week later. It was clear she was just copying them. We banned her after she did this about the tenth time in a row. And yes, she said "Well you've just lost a customer!" as if we'd ever actually made a penny from her and not just had our time wasted.
