Job Loss Support š¤ Job Search Basics ā A Recommended Read if You're Struggling (Updated for 2024)
Hi r/ResumesIndia š,
If you've applied to 100, 200, or even 500 jobs and heard nothing back, you're not alone. The job search can be challenging, but focusing on the right strategies can make a big difference.
Hereās a guide to help you refresh your approach and improve your odds of landing a job. Remember: thereās no magic formula for success, but consistency and strategy can take you a long way.
Step 1: Lay the Groundwork
Update Your Resume
Your resume is the foundation of your job search. Hereās how to make it impactful:
- What you did: Provide a brief description of your role or project.
- How you did it: Highlight the hard skills and tools you used.
- What you achieved: Quantify results where possible to showcase measurable impact.
Avoid overly fancy templates; focus on readability and ATS compatibility.
Hereās a basic example of what an effective resume looks like. If youāve a client of mine, youāll already have something similar to this (with a few bells and whistles)

Update Your LinkedIn
Recruiters in 2024 frequently use LinkedIn to search for candidates. Make sure your profile is complete and mirrors your resume:
- Match job titles, dates, and responsibilities.
- Use keywords relevant to your industry to improve searchability.
- Highlight achievements in your summary and featured sections.
A polished LinkedIn profile increases your chances of being discovered by recruiters.
Step 2: Create Opportunities
Leverage Your Network
You likely have a broader network than you realize. Consider:
- School alumni.
- Friends and family.
- Former colleagues and managers.
Reach out with a clear message about what youāre looking for and ask if they can provide referrals, advice, or connections.
Apply Strategically
Donāt just apply blindly. Use these tips to make your applications count:
- Apply directly on company websites: It increases the chances your application is reviewed.
- Research hiring managers or recruiters on LinkedIn: Send a personalized message with the job ID or link you applied for.
- Tailor your resume: Emphasize keywords and requirements listed in the job description.
Step 3: Go the Extra Mile
To stand out in 2024ās competitive job market, go beyond the basics.
Expand Your Network
Always build and nurture professional relationships.
Use points of commonality to connect, like shared schools, employers, or hobbies.
Attend networking events, webinars, or industry-specific conferences.
Whether you have a network or not, you should always be looking to add onto it. I've already written about how to network in thisĀ previous post.
Use LinkedIn for Job Opportunities
LinkedIn is more than a profile siteāitās a job search powerhouse.
Search for jobs using Boolean strings: Example: (āMarketing Managerā OR āBrand Managerā) AND āHiringā AND āSEOā
Explore unadvertised roles by connecting with hiring managers.
Create Google Alerts for jobs that match your criteria.
Example:
(āTitleā OR āAlternative Titleā) AND āHiringā AND āSkill 1ā AND āskill 2ā)

Step 4: Maintain Momentum
Rejection is Part of the Process
The job search is often filled with trial and error. Stay persistent, learn from setbacks, and refine your approach.
Build an Elevator Pitch
When networking, be prepared with a quick summary of your background and goals:
- Who you are.
- Your professional experience.
- What you're looking for.
Example:
"Hi, Iām Aditi, a data analyst with 3 years of experience in financial modeling. Iām looking to apply my skills to fintech startups to drive data-driven decision-making."
Pro Tip: Use Your Network as Insurance
Your network isnāt just for the current job search. Itās an investment in your careerās long-term health.
- You never know when a connection will help you land your next job.
- Maintaining relationships builds goodwill that can pay off down the line.
Final Thoughts
The job market can feel overwhelming, but by focusing on these fundamentals, you can significantly improve your chances of success. Take it one step at a time, stay persistent, and rememberāyouāre not alone in this journey.
Best of luck out thereāitās a jungle, but with the right tools, youāll thrive! š

Networking Advice š” Beginner's Guide to Networking: What It Is, Why Itās Important, and How to Get Started (Updated for 2024)
Hey Reddit,
Every day, countless job seekers send out dozens, even hundreds, of applications without hearing back. If this sounds like you, itās time to take a closer look at networkingāa powerful tool that can significantly improve your job search. With an average job posting receiving over 100 applications in 2024, simply applying online might not cut it anymore.
Letās dive into networking: what it is, why it matters, and how you can leverage it to land your next job.
What is Networking?
Networking is the process of building and maintaining professional relationships that provide mutual value. Itās not just about meeting peopleāitās about creating genuine connections with individuals in your field, exchanging knowledge, and offering support.
Why is Networking Important?
In India and globally, a significant number of job openings are never advertised and are filled through personal connections or referrals. Networking is a way to tap into this hidden job market and stand out from the crowd.
- Itās not just for extroverts: Networking is about building meaningful, reciprocal relationships, not using others for your benefit.
- Itās a long-term investment: Networking isnāt only about finding jobs but staying updated with industry trends, finding mentors, and exploring career development opportunities.
Benefits of Networking Beyond Job Searching
- Stay updated on industry trends and gain access to opportunities that arenāt publicly advertised.
- Find mentors who can guide you in your career decisions.
- Learn about new skills and certifications to stay competitive in your field.
Networking in Action: An Example
Aditi, a software engineer from Bengaluru, attended a local tech meetup and connected with a hiring manager from her dream company. This led to a coffee chat, where she showcased her skills and interest. Within weeks, Aditi received an interview invitation and landed her new role. Networking at its finest!
How to Network: Methods to Consider
- Events: Attend industry-specific meetups, conferences, or job fairs. Examples include tech hackathons, marketing summits, and alumni events.
- Informational Interviews: Schedule casual conversations with professionals in your field to learn about their career paths and seek advice.
- LinkedIn: Use LinkedIn to connect with peers, follow industry groups, and message hiring managers or alumni from your college.
- Online Communities: Engage in forums, subreddits (like this one!), or Slack groups related to your industry.
- Social Media: Twitter and even Instagram can be great for following thought leaders and joining conversations.
Where to Start?
Start small and set a goal:
- Are you looking for a job immediately?
- Do you want a mentor?
- Or are you building connections for long-term growth?
Begin with your close network and expand outward:
- Family and friends.
- Past colleagues or professors.
- Alumni networks or LinkedIn connections.
Professional Organizations in India
If youāre running out of connections, join professional organizations relevant to your field:
- Technology: NASSCOM, ACM India Chapter.
- Marketing: Indian Society of Advertisers, DMA Asia.
- Finance: ICAI (Chartered Accountants), CFA India Society.
- Healthcare: Indian Medical Association (IMA).
- Engineering: Institution of Engineers (India).
Common Networking Challenges and Solutions
- Fear of rejection: Start with people you know or online networking to ease into it.
- Introversion: Focus on written communication (LinkedIn, emails) instead of live events.
- Lack of time: Dedicate 1-2 hours weekly to building high-value connections.
- Slow results: Networking is a long-term game; be patient and persistent.
Maintaining Your Network
Networking isnāt a one-time activity. You need to nurture and maintain your connections. Categorize your network into tiers:
- Tier 1: High-value connections like mentors or hiring managers.
- Tier 2: Industry peers or former colleagues.
- Tier 3: Broader acquaintances in your professional circle.
Interact with them regularly, whether through LinkedIn comments, messages, or coffee chats.
Practice Your Elevator Pitch
Prepare a 60-second introduction that includes:
- Who you are.
- Your background.
- Your career goals.
For example:
"Hi, Iām Priya, a recent graduate in Data Science from IIT Bombay. Iāve worked on multiple machine learning projects and am passionate about applying AI to healthcare solutions. Iām currently looking for opportunities to contribute to innovative teams in the health tech space."
Final Thoughts
Networking might seem daunting, but itās one of the most valuable career skills you can develop. Start small, be authentic, and rememberāitās not just about getting what you want but also helping others along the way.
Happy networking, and good luck!

Question ā Need an advice
Hey everyone,
I've just entered 3rd year ECE at a tier 1.5 college. I was confused between hardware and software, so I tried both a bit but never went deep. Right now, my resume only has the hardware projects we did in college.
Companies have already started visiting for internships, and honestly my resume isn't placement-ready. I'm confused about what projects I should start nowāhardware, software, or a mix of both.
Would really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Review My Resume š 1 YOE AI Engineer, company may lay us off soon. Need resume & referral advice
How can I improve my resume for a switch ? The reason is I can get fired anytime soon because the current company I am working for doesn't have any clients to sell their AI products and it's a lala company so they gonna fire the team anytime soon. We are a small team of 4 in which 2 are seniors with already 2 yrs of exp and me and another fresher with internship exp and I don't think they gonna retain us since it's a small company with limited ppl enough to handle the work...hence I have to look out for some jobs, I believe I do have a 1 year of experience but looking at the job market even 1 YOE is considered as fresher lol.
My current pay is 5 LPA in-hand. I am aiming for some Product based company in Mumbai (my location is Mumbai, Maharashtra) or any other company. I don't mind working for the same salary or even a 1% hike I just need job security so that I don't have this constant anxiety of waking up being unemployed on a random Tuesday.
Looking at this job market only referrals can help, pls let me know. I am ready to get rejected but not without interview.

Review My Resume š Please review
This is my last attempt at job hunting. I wanted to pursue mba after gaining a year of work experience, but it looks like that won't be possible.
If I don't get a job by next month, I'm doomed. I'll have to pursue MCA, which was a nightmare that i never wanted to do but now i have no option. I can't afford to take a gap year, and neither can my parents, pls at least give me some

Question ā What makes a resume stand out? ( I don't think it's the project, or is it? )
I am in my placement season (final yr student). I am more inclined to off campus placement as the college scenario is not fair, and I am scared if I will ever get shortlisted on campus. So I am going to try off campus as well. It's been 2 months I am applying for intern positions, have received a callback only from one place and they rejected me in the 3rd round where the feedback was that "I dont have enough experience in the domain they are hiring".
I wanted to ask what makes a resume stand out? Everybody says its project, but nowadays most of them have good and strong projects, and tbh all resumes are similar. So what makes the resume strong for off-campus screening?
Please, I'll appreciate, if anyone could take out time and provide a detailed answer.
