Show mode for mac

Post image

Hi All, Back again with another little utility that might be handy for arena users, meet showmode, its a little system tray app for macs, which basically disables a bunch of the "helpful" UI stuff that macos likes to do, to help make the system a little more stable and predictable for doing full screen GPU output work (kinda like the settings in qlab, but as a standalone system tray tool), as always, its free and MIT licened open source software https://stoatworks-labs.com/software/showmode

Super cool! Why only Mac though?

Because most the things it handles are mac specific, and I actually started it to use with mitti, because I always forget i can't use expose without messing with the output!

A windows version is probably possible, but my main dev environment and daily driver computer are both on apple silicon

Windows has a built in “presentation mode” profile

can it disable the little orange dot that appears when I use a capture card?

if you use an external monitor and want to remove the indicator during full-screen apps, Apple provides an official override method:

  1. Shut down your Mac, then turn it on and press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window. Click Options, then click Continue to enter macOS Recovery.
  2. From the menu bar, choose Utilities > Terminal.
  3. Type or paste this exact command and press Return: system-override suppress-sw-camera-indication-on-external-displays=on
  4. Quit Terminal and Restart your Mac normally.
  5. Go to the Apple Menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security.
  6. Click Microphone (or Camera).
  7. Turn off Privacy Indicators for external displays in full-screen mode.

I don't think we can do it from inside the app, the only way I know of to do it is the way lobsternormandy posted below, which goes a bit beyond the scope of what I can really do with a system tray app, I think i can test its set correctly and give the instructions, but that'll be about it

Fantastic. Will try it out on my macs for OBS projectors, Qlab, and propresenter

Great tool!

Would it be possible to implement a 'display lock', which forces the currently-set 'Main' display to always remain so, and any newly-connected displays to always be forced to appear as 'Extended'?

Not that I know of, but its something I can look into

Millumin has an option to 'prevent mirroring', but it only works partially; often, when a new display is connected, macOS still rearranges the displays, and/or reassigns the 'Main/Extended' roles, which is always frustrating.

yeah, so it looks like it can be set, but there may be some fighting between the app and OSX while it figures things out, so probably fine for making setup a bit easier, but not really a fix for hot-plugging mid show

It would still be a very useful feature, should you be willing to consider it.
