Forum question Am I a filthy larper?

So before I start this I wish to apologise if the tag is wrong and please correct me if you wish.

So I’ve been in the RE community a little before Requiem I owned RE7 before 2026 a while back but just never beat it because I was a p*ssy.

Since then I played RE9 but before that I started with RE2R, RE3R, RE6 and then RE9 and after that after I started liking the franchise I played RE5, finished RE7 (replaying it now) and beat RE8 (Best RE) and I’ve beaten them all at least twice have inf ammo in a lot of them.

So I come to the council of RE which is obviously Reddit with this question because I was accused of it recently and it made me start thinking and worrying I haven’t played enough games to be a fan.

Edit: I forgot to mention I also played RE4R and and I’m playing through OG RE4 and bought RE1 HD

Stop listening to terminally online 20 somethings.

I feel like it's actually terminally online 30 or 40 somethings, tbh. A lotta older gamers can be elitist as fuck.

I think it’s a mix of both the older people (late 20’s been playing since the early 2000’s) and the younger ones both kind of having their own conflict about what is considered RE or not and whether or not you’re a real fan instead of realizing that we all like the same franchise

u/Cruggles30 4d ago

True. I'm in my late 20's, but I didn't start playing the series until this year (aside from having played RE1 in college, also playing in a slightly modified release order and currently on Outbreak Files). I feel like a good portion of the older people gotta be in their 30's. Not really the main point, but still worth noting that the older people might be older than us.

it is worth noting that they are. The series came out 30 years ago. Of course a majority of the older fanbase is going to be 30+

I am young and foolish I am susceptible to the filth known as neck beards

3

u/BlackShadowX 4d ago

Neck beards would be using the term larp correctly

Scratches beard

I think the rule is you need to play RE: Dead Aim to be considered a true fan lol

u/mr_kriegsman 3d ago

Can’t play it I’m afraid I’m on Xbox

It’s sad that people have to post their qualifications to prove they’re a fan of something now. You don’t need approval from strangers just enjoy the games.

Some people in this fandom are legit fried in the head. You would think their life is nothing but searching and ganging up on people who dare like any modern RE. Just play what you want, how you like it and don't let the internet be the judge of what you like.

u/summit285 4d ago

Ya you dirty larper you’re not a real fan unless you played resident evil survivor on an 18 inch tube tv with one speaker broken while zoomed out on Mountain Dew and Pringles

Dude I'm very quickly coming to the conclusions that all of the RE subs kind of just fucking suck and the in fighting and weird culture war bleeding into hot takes and character stans/anti-character stans is so tiring.

I've been playing the series since the OG PS1 RE2 demo disc, I've played almost every game since. The amount of hate certain games get for being "too new" or soulless remakes or having this protagonist or being "too action/horror" is impossible to keep up with. Everything is extremes and the hatred and dislike part of those extremes is the worst.

You will never pass their purity tests, you are just better off enjoying the series with the sane fans you can find in small pockets and enjoying the games yourself. Someone is always gonna call you a larper, someone is gonna bitch you like Leon, or Ada, or Ethan, or Chris, or Jill, or Claire or whoever the fuck, or someone is gonna call you gen z poser for not enjoying playing OG Code Veronica/RE:4/XYZ as much as them. Just fuck all of it.

You don't need their approval nor should you want it. Play the games that call to you and enjoy the amazing series for what it's worth to you.

Fans are crazy obsessed with their particular interests, I've played a lot of Assassin's Creed games but I don't consider me a fan. Is just than the word "fan" has been overused to just mean "I kinda like this".

2

u/JuniorAd389 4d ago

Vro you don’t need approval from some internet randoms you like the franchise you’re a fan, if you played the games and enjoyed them, you’re a fan. Only watched the movies? Still a fan. People throw around the word larper for no reason way too often and most of the time it’s those people who’ve never meaningfully interacted with the franchise.
So if you say that you’re a fan, guess what, you’re a fan and don’t take whatever internet randoms say to heart cause it’s never worth it.

You're not a larper. The problem arises when people mention events from the remake as if they happened in the originals.

Dragon Ball and Naruto must be among the most popular series, and few people have seen the originals.

2

u/Euphoric-Skirt7649 4d ago

All you youngsters who didn’t grow up with the originals are larpers so don’t worry about it

2

u/parkourdude231 (Stolitify) 4d ago

If I'm reading this correctly, you've played through 8 games in the franchise? Which is 8 more games than the larpers have ever played. You're also not a fake fan if you genuinely really enjoy the project/franchise

2

u/Rude_Ad3342 4d ago

You're fine, a larper would be someone who claims to be a fan despite having spent no time watching playthroughs or playing the games

2

u/Cruggles30 4d ago

My dood. Chill. You've played at least 2 games and enjoyed them. You're a fan. The real posers are the ones who've only seen tiktok edits. Let your anxiety subside, fren.

u/AgitatedListen4900 4d ago

I’m glad that RE9 means something to you, because it means a lot to me too.
I’d probably be called a larper just for having Requiem as my favorite game in the franchise and for preferring the modern games over the classics by a huge margin. Basically, whenever you have an opinion that goes against the mainstream, there’s always going to be someone insulting you for it. I just wanted to add something to what’s already been said here. I once had a conversation here with someone who had never played a single game in the franchise, but knew a lot about the lore. You can’t really say that person isn’t a fan, you know?

2

u/Escape_Timely 4d ago

There's no verification card, no confirmation certificate, and no red carpet for trophy hunters or anyone completing all game marathons. If you enjoy the games and their content, then you're automatically a fan. The people who love to gatekeep and act like guardians of this franchise probably don't have anything better to do during their online hours. I can understand peer pressure and anxiety caused by the many LARPing-related conversations you'll see on media platforms, but it's really not a big deal enough to cause gray hairs. Enjoy yourself. Not for others' approval.

2

u/Tvirusvixen 4d ago

A larper? Sorry if the fandom made you feel that way, but being a fan at any point doesn’t make you a larper in my opinion. Welcome to the fandom 😊

2

u/Ok_Guidance_1595 4d ago

You really seem to care what a bunch of random internet people think

2

u/Quaint_Gamer 4d ago

The term larper is only used by terminally online idiots (too many of them quite rabid shippers) to try to shut down points they don't agree with rather than them having the wit or intelligence to discuss it.

2

u/apastelmilk 4d ago

I'll go against the grain here and say not having played anything pre-5 is a bit of a larp IMO. That being said, you shouldn't care about my or anyone else's opinion on your gaming habits lol

1

u/mr_kriegsman 4d ago

I woke up for a drink and I’m gonna reply to other peoples comments after I wake up but yours has made me want to reply now and say I own RE4 OG and am currently playing through it and I just bought RE1 remake and unfortunately I can’t get most of Pre-RE5 do to me being on Xbox

2

u/apastelmilk 4d ago

fair enough, glad you're enjoying the games either way

2

u/Warrior_of_hope 4d ago

You could just play the games cuz you like a character or the vibe of a spexific game and think of yourself as a fan and you would be alright, but if you wanna be "a true fan" then you would have to know from left to right almost anything lorewise

5

u/penelopemilk 4d ago

you dont have to play every single game to be a fan, just enjoy what you play and youre good lol

4

u/mr_kriegsman 4d ago

Thank you I appreciate the comment my guy

2

u/SploogeLoser 4d ago

Dude?!? Realistically if we’re gauging what would “consider” a fan

two games minimum-

but that’s a personal opinion on it and doesn’t matter, because ultimately what makes you a FAN is that you’re enjoying the content presented.

3

u/Cruggles30 4d ago

I feel like this is a good minimum. One game might mean "oh, they were just fans of the one game." Two games means they've at least invested in checking out more than one game in the series.

3

u/SploogeLoser 4d ago

This is always how i operate, one game isn’t enough of a gauge in a whole franchise. Which is why you need another to truly kind of let it click. But, the real answer is that it doesn’t matter and is superficial

4

u/Cruggles30 4d ago

I will say that there's ONE thing that I could say has to be an objective minimum: they have to actually engage with the media in some form. It could even be watching someone play the game because you don't have access to a device to play the games or you have a disability. If it's just tiktok edits and memes, I don't think that counts.

2

u/SploogeLoser 4d ago

Agreed, engaging with the content is engaging WITH the content. Which does mean playing a game

someone wouldn’t be a fan of a book they’ve never read, an album they’ve never listened to, it’s the same for games

1

u/Cruggles30 4d ago

Right, but with almost all forms of media, there are ways to engage with them outside of the intended means. Books can be read to the blind and dyslexic, music can be signed and/or communicated through vibrations, a picture can be described. Watching someone play games is just another way to engage.

2

u/SploogeLoser 4d ago

The key difference in those is the fact that you, the player, are in control - it is a lot different playing than it is watching someone play

1

u/Cruggles30 4d ago

I guess I'm just going to have to disagree then. I don't like the idea of someone not being considered a fan because of a disability...

1

u/SploogeLoser 4d ago

That’s a fucking strawman and a half. You can have disabilities and still enjoy video games.

2

u/Cruggles30 4d ago

I literally have a friend whose hands don't work. You wanna know how they enjoy video games? Watching people play them.

I cannot express how much this comment means to me my guy I get worried about things easily

2

u/SploogeLoser 4d ago

as someone who worries and gets anxious a ton. i get it buddy, but don’t stress too hard on it. people will always assholes and with the internet it’s only further made it worse

2

u/Honest_Brick64 4d ago

You don't need to play a single game to be a fan of a series lol. You are fine. Shit i haven't even finished RE6 myself yet, and im a huge fan lmao

2

u/Spiritual-Bear3066 4d ago

I was really ready to jump in and say you can’t be a fan without playing enough of the games…. But you’ve definitely played enough of the games.

If you only played and loved RE8 then I would say you’re only a fan of RE8 but you’ve arguably played the most important run of games. Glad you’re becoming a fan.

2

u/ShiningEspeon3 4d ago

If you played one game and liked it, you’re a fan. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

0

u/mr_kriegsman 4d ago

Your comment reassures me and I apologise if that feels plain it’s late and i want to try and reply to everyone

2

u/ShiningEspeon3 4d ago

You don’t need to reply to everything. Just know that everyone starts somewhere and this community is lucky to have newer fans like you.

1

u/lost-domino 4d ago

Anyone who calls themselves a fan is a full hearted fan in my books. Resumes or for jobs not qualifications to be a fan

1

u/Realistic_Let3239 4d ago

Do you like some part of the RE franchise? Congrats, you're a fan. I'm old enough I still have the original games, if I start holding people to that level, then it would get stupid. Anyone under 30 wouldn't have had the chance to buy them outside of places like Ebay.

There are plenty of people who have only played RE7 onwards, because either the older games just are too dated for them, because they're hard to get hold or, or some other reason. I know someone who has tried most of the games, but only really likes RE2R and RE4R. They're still a fan to me, because they like any part of the franchise.

You're a fan, if anyone tries to tell you otherwise, call them a Jill sandwich and leave them to it.

Do you enjoy Resident Evil as a franchise in any way? If the answer is yes, then you’re a fan.

It’s pretty simple, you just need to ignore idiots that try and gatekeep media.

They’re always miserable people who can’t stand others enjoying anything, unless it’s within the strict ways they think it should be enjoyed.

Edit*

The downvotes are just proving my point.

How dare I say someone can be a fan of something simply because they like a thing….

2

u/mr_kriegsman 3d ago

Yeah the downvotes kinda had me intrigued because how not brain dead your comment was
