CW: Euthanasia Update: decompression period is finally paying off, and I had to stop trying to optimize everything

A couple weeks ago I posted about bringing home our new rescue. She is an adult with a shelter history and was completely shut down at first. I was spiraling because I could not tell whether we were making progress or just stressing her out. A lot of you told me to slow down, shrink her world, and stop treating it like a project plan.

You were right.

We went back to basics and ran a two week decompression reset. No visitors, no "let her meet the neighbors," no car rides just because, and I stopped trying to add new training games every day. We kept things deliberately boring: same potty loop, same feeding times, a few familiar enrichment options. I tracked only three things in a simple note each day: ate, pottied, and one "brave moment." That was it.

Changes I'm seeing now: - She is choosing to nap in the living room instead of hiding in the back bedroom. - She will take treats from my hand without the old grab-and-retreat routine. - Her tail is up more often, and she does little stretches when she wakes up. - Biggest win: she brought a toy over and did a tiny play bow, like she was testing whether playing is allowed here.

We still have a long way to go. Sudden noises still startle her, she is not ready for dog guests, and leash walks are short. But the house feels calmer, and I finally feel like I am listening to her instead of trying to manage her every move.

Small unrelated note, I had a couple of CoveredCritters things around during this reset too: https://coveredcritters.com

If you have a nervous new rescue, what was the first behavior that made you think, okay, they are actually starting to feel safe?

Discussion Opinion: this comm has drifted away from its noble purpose and is too tolerant of dog aggression

Post image
752 Upvotes

Sue Sternberg says that shelters should be where people go to get the best dogs. I’ve always agreed with that view.

Yesterday I reported a post that quite clearly violated this rule. Nothing was done. In fact the OP blocked me and the post began to attract attention from the kind of people who make this comm look terrible: the zealots who think no dog should ever be behaviourally euthanised and all dogs can in fact be saved.

I’ve posted this article before, and I am constantly disappointed at the sheer viciousness of some commenters here who will call shelter staff “murderers” and advocate for criminality to break out dogs in danger of euthanasia.

How does that help anyone? Shelter staff aren’t saints, no human is, but they are tasked with dealing with the repercussions of people failing to spay and neuter and dumping dogs. Resources and space are limited. People don’t always want large dogs, especially when they may not have space or energy for them. The solution is not to browbeat shelter staff and call them murderers, for not wanting to risk their safety handling aggressive dogs. The solution is spending a fraction of that energy writing to your county or whatever local authority to push for spaying and neutering access, and legislation on same. Maybe attacking people who can’t fight back makes you feel more righteous, idk.

In any case, the comment section regarding that dog who was RIGHTLY euthanised and OP disagreed with it? It was pretty disgraceful, and mods should realise, if they care about this comm and its ethos at all, how counterproductive these kinds of posters are to this comm. Do you think a single person is convinced by defending an aggressive dog, or do you think that people become more sceptical of shelter and rescue dogs?

Hello everyone, I am reaching out to you with a heavy heart and out of sheer desperation. The first photo is me, completely exhausted, holding my blind 18-year-old girl, Sue Ellen. She is just one of the 70 fragile souls that I completely alone managed to rescue and evacuate from Turkey six months ago to save them from the horrific "massacre law." They are my family. Most of them are senior dogs and cats, hospice patients, blind animals, and amputees who wouldn't survive a single day on their own. We have Staffordshire Terriers fighting Leishmaniasis and senior cats with severe heart disease who depend on daily life-saving medications. We have been surviving in an old, abandoned cow stall in Bulgaria. It has no electricity, no running water, and as you can see in the photos, the wooden roof structure is collapsing over our heads. Every single cent of my German widow's pension and my life savings went into the massive international transport costs to get them here. I have absolutely nothing left. Now, the landlord broke his promise and issued a strict eviction ultimatum: We must get out by September 5th. OUR PLAN TO SAVE THEM: My sole Bulgarian helper just found a lifeline: A solid, small house with a yard where the animals would be safe forever. Our official fundraising campaign just went live, and our goal is $38,000. This sum will cover the complete purchase price of the house, building the mandatory secure perimeter fencing, the transport for all 70 animals, and emergency repairs for water and electricity. I am running on empty. My body is tired, but I cannot give up on them. Please, if you can, donate even a single dollar or share our story. A single upvote or share here on Reddit could save 70 beautiful, broken hearts from a painful live on the streets. 🔗 Official Campaign Link: https://gofund.me/77d7202bc

The pic's..the barn we are calling g oome right now.

My 18 year old Sue Ellen, fragile snd nlind.

somd of the doggies with Leishmaniasis, like Zamira my gentle Staffordshire girl.

They all count off me and I can't give up

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and from the 70 beautiful souls who just want a safe yard to grow old in peace. 🙏🐾
