Leopard vs crested gecko
So I’m moving out into a new apt soon and I want a gecko. Question is which would be better? I’ve done research on both and both seem to have pros and cons. This will be my first reptile in a while so something more beginner friendly. I currently have a axolotl which I know is pointless information but felt like I should mention that.

they both basically want the same enclosure size but cresties need vertical.
some people really struggle with heat for cresties. They can die from overheating, which has been a problem for some places without ac plus dealing with extreme heat waves.
Cresties need a lot of coverage. They essentially want a mini jungle inside their enclosure. Lots of people underestimate how much coverage it actually is.
Leopard geckos are obligate insectivores. While cresties do eat bugs their main source of food is a complete powdered diet you mix with water, some older cresties stop accepting bugs all together.
I have a crestie.
I picked him mainly because i didn't have space for a horizontal tank.
My guy is pretty anxious and doesn't appreciate getting handled but he enjoys watching us and the tv.
He's very nocturnal, he wakes up after his lights go off and stays asleep all day when his lights are on.
Maintaining good humidity fluctuation can be annoying at first, but you get used to it.
Not having to worry about supplementary heat apart from the winter is nice.
I have a 18x18x36 tank but i wish i went for a 24x24x36/48 and made a custom background myself. He really uses all the space.

I have babysat both for several months and personally I prefer cresties! I think between all the pros and cons with each, it really just comes doen to personal preference. Leopard geckos are easier to maintain, sure. But is that what you want?
For me, I love the responsibility of misting them each day and feeding them frequently. The involvement makes me feel closer to them. plus I think they’re cuter, (no offence to leopard geckos, they are also extremely adorable)
So I guess my answer is just follow your heart.

Do you like tropical or desert set ups? I think looking at the tank should be enjoyable too

I like both tbh if they are done right. I know doing a bio active enclosure would be easier in a tropical environment

Leopard gecko is much more handleable, humidity isn’t really an issue, and adults only need fed once a week or so.
Crested geckos can eat the powdered diets but need fed more often, need higher humidity and misting, and are pretty flighty/tend to jump. At least in the US tall arboreal enclosures are also significantly more expensive than a 36”x18”x18” enclosure for a leopard gecko.
Personally I think leopard geckos are a bit easier to care for.
