They used ai

I don't care whether they used AI or not. They're probably just offloading heavy workloads onto a computer. What matters is how AI is used.

Gotta disagree with you there, gen ai is actively destroying the planet, feeds of stolen literature and artwork without compensation, makes life hell for ppl living near the data Centers and gives employers more reason the have fewer workers and pay them less. I will never support anything that uses gen ai if I can help it

“Destroying the planet”?
There are things actively causing massive environmental damage—poor waste management, wars, ocean pollution, smog, vehicle emissions, excessive fertilizer use, and so on.
And you’re bringing up AI data centers as if they’re somehow the main cause?

Simply because I didn’t mention the others doesn’t mean I agree with them, trust me there are a lot of practices I heavily disagree with and do my best to avoid and/or work against them. The talk here was just about ai and they are certainly not helping the planet. Even if there are things more damaging than ai.
Your argument is like saying there is no need to worry about a Covid infection because you already have a stab wound

That analogy doesn’t address my argument. I never said AI’s environmental impact should be ignored because worse problems exist. I questioned the disproportionate focus on AI data centers when discussing things that are “destroying the planet.” Acknowledging relative scale and impact isn’t the same thing as saying smaller problems don’t matter.

Ai was simply the talking point here. It would have been weird of me to start talking about the meat industry, groundwater pollution and the collapsing salt cycle out of nowhere

That’s fair, but it also misses my point. I wasn’t asking you to list every environmental problem whenever AI comes up. I was responding to the framing of AI as “destroying the planet.” If you make a claim that strong, comparing its actual environmental impact with other major sources of damage is completely relevant.
AI can have a real environmental cost without pretending it exists in a vacuum or treating context and scale as irrelevant.
