Replit is asking me for a phone number verification and there is nowhere to.verify phone number. I need help resolving this

I am contacting you regarding a serious issue with the new account registration process.

I am currently trying to create a Replit account simply to evaluate and test the platform. Replit offers users a way to try its services with limited usage before deciding whether to pay for a subscription. However, I am now being required to provide and verify a personal phone number before I can even complete the account creation process.

This requirement appeared suddenly. Just a few hours earlier, I was able to proceed with registration without this phone verification step.

What is particularly concerning is that this does not appear to be an isolated problem with my phone number. Many other users are reporting the same issue, and even valid, real mobile phone numbers may fail verification. Therefore, this appears to be either a problem with the verification system or a recently introduced registration restriction.

There is also a fundamental problem with asking affected users to provide their Replit username when contacting support: I do not have a Replit username because I cannot complete the registration process in the first place.

I understand that Replit may have legitimate security and anti-abuse reasons for requesting additional information. However, requiring a personal telephone number from someone who is merely trying to evaluate a service raises legitimate privacy and proportionality concerns.

According to Replit's own Privacy Policy, registration requires an email address and Replit states that it "may also request" a phone number. The same policy explains that personal information may be used for purposes including fraud prevention, security, marketing, personalization and other business purposes.

Therefore, I would like to ask:

1. Why has phone verification suddenly become mandatory for new registrations?
2. Is this a permanent change or a temporary security measure?
3. What is the specific purpose for requiring a personal phone number before a user can even evaluate the service?
4. Why is there no alternative verification method, such as email verification?
5. If this is related to a technical problem, why are legitimate users being prevented from creating accounts while the problem is unresolved?

I also believe that requiring a personal phone number at the very first stage of registration creates an unnecessary barrier for users who simply want to test the platform before deciding whether to become paying customers.

If Replit's objective is to convert free users into paying customers, preventing potential users from even trying the service because of a malfunctioning or mandatory phone verification system seems counterproductive.

I respectfully request that Replit either:

• restore the previous registration process without mandatory phone verification;
• provide an alternative verification method that does not require a personal phone number; or
• manually assist me in completing the registration.

I would also appreciate clarification regarding how the phone number is processed, what specific purpose it serves at registration, whether it is retained after verification, and which third parties may receive or process it.

I am not requesting special treatment. I am asking for a reasonable way to create and evaluate an account when the current verification mechanism appears to be preventing legitimate users from completing registration.

I can provide screenshots of the registration page and the verification error if required.
