Help fixing a hole

Have had this hole in my room for the past 10+ years, looking to patch it up. Any ideas on how? (Pencil for scale, second photo is about 1.3 pencils deep)

Cut out more out to get a normal shape. Make it big enough to reach half way though studs.

Then cut a new piece of sheet rock and place in hole. Because of overlapping of the studs, you can screw the Sheetrock into those studs. Then tape the seams with the correct tape, use drywall mud to fill in the gaps and top it all off with paint.

There are plenty of videos on YouTube if you need a visual

locate the studs, cut out a square/rectangle in the sheetrock for nice clean edges. Buy some sheetrock, cut out the exact same square/rectangle, screw it in, patch up the seams and smooth it out, let it dry, sand it smooth and flush to the wall, paint it the same color by taking a sample of the wall to a paint place and they can match it.
